I do video editing myself in Linux and Kdenlive does pretty much everything I need. The UI is a bit odd to learn but I’d imagine any new editing software is gonna have a learning curve of some sort.

Dealing with D&D5E Hate and Pathfinder 2E

I have been trying to get my partner into Pathfinder 2nd edition, and they do seem taken with it, however he’s been having some issues lately with PF2E. Notably, online. The more he gets into PF2E, the more hate he sees for 5E. He’s been playing 5E for years now and has invested a lot of time and love into the game, and to...

if he wants to continue browsing the Reddit community for Pathfinder

I’ve tried talking to him about this and he’s said that that’s how he got into 5E, by trying to ask questions and finding answers online for them. And since PF2E has such a smaller community than 5E does, there aren’t many place to go find answers to questions.

I mean I criticize D&D all the time, but there’s a difference between criticizing the game and saying that the game is stupid or for babies or something (I’ve seen posts saying that 5E is for babies although those were from players of older editions of D&D).

Wizards of the Coast “running the game into the ground” is another reason he said he doesn’t see a reason in playing the game anymore, and I’ll give that one to him (although I will say that a table can simply opt to not play OneD&D and simply to just play regular 5E, I’d imagine people did that with 3.5E when 4E came along).

The main issue, and I’ve said this in another comment on this thread, is that he will have a question about PF2E and his first instinct is to go to Reddit or do a google search, which turns up with results from Reddit. He then maybe sees an answer to the question he was looking for, but he also sees unneeded hate directed towards the game he loves.

He’s said that the problem surrounding PF2E is the culture of the game, and I can honestly agree with him. People can be loud when they’re negative tbh, and moreso online. And it can’t really be solved with blocking users, hiding posts, and moving on like you say it can, because he’s shared with me several posts bad-mouthing 5E in favor of PF2E and they are all from different users. Yes, Archives of Nethys has the rules for free legally, but even I had questions going into running the game for the first time. What I did was read AoN as much as I could before running the game, but I am not my partner.

Exactly, my motto is let people enjoy things if they’re not hurting anyone

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

That’s such a great analogy, I just wish I felt more confident about sharing it with my partner.

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

I’ll share it with him tomorrow as it’s pretty late for me and I have work early. I’m simply just not super confident sharing the analogy with him will stop him from quitting the hobby altogether or at least stop him from playing Pathfinder

I think typically a doctor would try to give alternatives to doing something that hurts the patient.

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

I mean I know the Internet is often a toxic place, but I don’t think telling him “oh well the Internet is just toxic, deal with it” would help the situation. I suppose one thing I’m looking for here is potentially an alternative to Reddit for searching up questions about Pathfinder such that he would avoid D&D comparisons in a negative light (I say a negative light just because Pathfinder was born from 3.5E, so comparisons are going to happen regardless because the two games are related).

Maybe the simplest way to do this is, when your partner tells you, “I read someone being mean about 5e” you just ask, “Do you agree with them?”

I mean I know he doesn’t, mostly because I’ve known him for a little over two years at this point.

I think the main issue is that people online are stating their opinion as fact or talking about PF2E and ignoring their biases against 5E. Asking people online to check their biases is a tall task I suppose, but I guess that goes back to my main question of this post of finding a knowledge center for Pathfinder that doesn’t include negativity towards 5E.

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

Perhaps, I’ll try recommending them to him as well, although I think I may have before

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

That’s fair, and I personally like PF2E better than 5E. After having GM’ed PF2E for about a year to a year and a half (this was from about 2021 to about 2022), I don’t feel like I could DM 5E again because it puts so much pressure on the DM to work (rulings over rules) and while some are okay with that, I personally don’t like it.

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

The only thing is the comments that he’s found have been from that subreddit…

I know it’s not perfect, but it seems to be pretty prevalent based on the things my partner is searching (as he’s coming upon the negative comparisons a lot).

Yeah, it does look like it’s dead, pretty much. I’d love to start something but between my two jobs and moving soon, I don’t really have the time

There is, however, still the concept of the Chinese Room thought experiment, and I don’t think AI will topple that one for a while.

For those who don’t know and don’t wish to browse off the site, the thought experiment posits a situation in which a guy who does not understand Chinese is sat in a room and told to respond to sets of Chinese characters that come into the room. He has a little booklet of responses—all completely in Chinese—for him to use to send responses out of the room. The thought experiment questions whether or not the system of the Chinese Room itself can be thought to understand Chinese or even the man himself.

With the Turing Test getting all of the media spotlight in AI, machine learning, and cognitive science, I think the Chinese Room should enter into the conversation as the field of AI looks towards G.A.I.

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun?

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

I’m glad I’m not the only person to dislike this game! After going through like three of the chapter 1 missions for the characters, the game felt very very samey, and on top of that, it’s probably one of the only story games that I haven’t finished.

Second for Journey, it’s a master class in non-dialogue storytelling, and it’s just a beautiful game all around. I got introduced to it through its music (via a cover artist) and have fallen in love with the game.

Effectively, console manufacturers should agree on some kind of standard architecture, which, to be very realistic and blunt (apologies as this isn’t necessarily the tone of the post, but I like trying to make things work in some way), as long as Nintendo is in the console game, it’s gonna be a bit difficult (unless we just let them do whatever they want console-wise and have the others create some kind of standard home console arch). As someone who is dipping their toes into game development, that is something I would love to see.

I tried playing the two original Baldur's Gate games on Ubuntu. It's hell.

Long story short: I am absolutely inexperienced with Linux distros but made the switch from Windows a bit more than a year ago. Right now, everyone’s talking about Baldur’s Gate 3, including a lot of the podcasts and shows I follow: since I never experienced the OG games, I wanted to try them out. They were on sale on GOG,...

VR, Linux, and my Currently Unused Rift

I’m looking to getting back into VR gaming. However, with my switch to Linux, that has made things a little more complicated. I don’t own a Valve Index (although I’ve heard that there are some issues with the Index on Linux), I own a Rift CV1. As far as I’m aware, the Oculus Rift is pretty much completely incompatible...

Some Experimental Synth Music for your consideration by Yours Truly (wiresbranches.bandcamp.com)

These tracks are an assortment of tracks I made while studying modular synthesis in university and created with VCV Rack and Ableton Live. The link listed here is for my Bandcamp (as that supports me more than streams) but my music is also available on most major streaming platforms.

Pokemon Progression: Roadblocks?

So I'm currently playing through Pokemon Violet and I am enjoying. However, I've noticed something during my playthrough semi-recently that I've noticed whenever I play any Pokemon game: the level progression. Now in Pokemon Violet, it's open-world and also up to the player as to what path they take and what order they complete...

I've been trying to explore here and there and I'm doing the same thing with catching one of every 'mon I come across (with the exception of the Terra types). I've been doing Terra raids as well as trying to fight trainers when I can but since the game makes it easy to ignore trainers and with my upbringing of always being stopped by trainers at the worst time, I tend to skip them. As for rotation, I've really only been rotating my team based on type (e.g. I used my fire starter to beat Artazon, I used Fairy 'mons to beat Giacomo, etc.).

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

I am, but currently, I've only been getting smalls and extra-smalls, not mediums or larges. Perhaps it's the location of the raid battles that makes them low-level 🤷

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

The open world exploration is nice and all, but it's so empty. Contrast that with Breath of the Wild that has so much environmental storytelling along with side quests that help you actually do stuff in those open areas. Excuse me for comparing Legend of Zelda to Pokémon, but both have released open world games and one is clearly designed more thoughtfully.

cityboundforest,
@cityboundforest@beehaw.org avatar

I think one of the reasons I'm playing this game differently than I usually do (which is to just use a small set of 'Mons that I caught early on) because I'm trying to min-max my type advantages. The game (and the internet) make it somewhat easy to do that, but it takes a boatload of time. Another reason could be that I don't want to go in underleveled and have my entire team squashed in 30 seconds.

Singleplayer games have no reason to require an internet connection to be able to play the game.
