The boat salesman says you need a boat.

YOU pay for the infrastructure, YOU pay for the maintenance, YOU pay for the gas. Why would they stop now?

Unless the round trip efficiency of synthesized methane (synthesis, transportation and re-capture) is better than solar/hydro/nuke electricity it doesn’t make sense build our own hydrocarbons. There are also the cumulative health effects of burning methane in your house and that it is serious greenhouse gas.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

Methane has to be compressed for both transportation in pipes and storage in tanks, a very energy expensive process. Or it can be chilled down and condensed to a liquid for bulk transportation in ships, also a very energy expensive process. Every single joint and valve in the distribution network has the potential to leak, and many of them do, the same goes for storage tanks. Also pressure regulators (like the one on the side of your house) have to vent to bring down the pressure when the network is too high.

Natural gas distribution networks are extremely leaky.

Any time you say nuclear power most people think of Homer Simpson and Fukushima. Canada could be cranking out reactors and fuel for local and international use but it’s ‘too dangerous.’

There are NO parties in Canada that represent non-corporate interests.

When your government commits crimes against its country wholesale, there is nothing you can do that even compares. Abuse self-checkouts, cook your taxes, split your internet connection across 3 houses. You will never do a thousandth of the damage they do to you.

I am a little tempted to see how ME handles the modern web but it seems like a good way to b0rk my setup.

Huh, I wonder if there is a way to play HL2 on this setup without Steam.

I have a few of those “HD” laptop’s rolling around, they are pretty horrendous (and easy to get for free). When LCDs first came out I was kinda disappointed that I was going from ~2k CRTs back to 1024x768. Even now the default is only 1920x1080 which is only 10% larger than the CRT for this PC.

Finding 2 sticks of ram that both worked AND worked together was a slog of boot/swap/rebooting. It really is just plug and play these days.

When I had ME the first time around I do remember there being some stability issues but I never had it totally brick, even with the assload of sus softeware that came from Kazaa and Morpheus.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

I got it on Kazaa ;)

Oh man, we have 30+ PCs in the building that are used to control big automated machines, they used to run on XP at 1024x768. When they started to fall apart I offered up the solution of using modern machines running Debian and putting the SCADA software in a virtual machine, this was rejected. They instead went with Lenovo micro-PCs and Windows 10. They then paid a programmer to manually rearrange and scale up every machine page page to fit on a 1920x1080 screen. FML.

Did you play Squadrons? The mission briefings were still not up to X-Wing/Tie Fighter standards but the flight was 10/10.

I seem to remember having issues with XP and Dos games but if ME is too problematic I will try 98 and XP. Though if I’m going with XP I’ll be using a half built P4 PC that I have hanging around.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s been literally 20 years, but I seem to remember having more issues with XP than ME as far as Dos compatibility. I have already run into some audio troubles so a dedicated card might be the next step.

nik282000,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

After messing around for a couple of days now I might try a dual boot between 98 and ME. I haven’t had any stability issues but this particular hardware doesn’t play well with Dos and audio under ME 🙃. Thanks for the info!

@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m using an IDE-SATA adapter so swappable drive bay would be a nice solution. I’m not even sure if 95 would handle 512MB of ram, my original W95machine only had 32MB XD

As long as it wasn’t stuck at 60Hz, CRTs had the better picture up until at least 2010. I get why they went out of favour but if someone made an 80lb, 16:9 4K CRT I would buy it.

Is Canada Finally Taking Far-Right Extremism Seriously? (thetyee.ca)

In late summer 2023, the RCMP made headlines with the arrests of two men in Ottawa and Kingsey Falls, Quebec, on terrorism and hate propaganda charges. The arrests marked a significant victory in a three-year investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team targeting the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division....

I love all the old stuff that was on kids television in the 90s, but one of the NFBs more recent projects really suck out to me. Carts of Darkness.

Murray Siple’s feature-length documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts down the steep hills of North Vancouver. This subculture shows that street life is much more than the stereotypes portrayed in mainstream media.

The film takes a deep look into the lives of the men who race carts, the adversity they face and the appeal of cart racing despite the risk. Shot in high-definition and featuring tracks from Black Mountain, Ladyhawk, Vetiver, Bison, and Alan Boyd of Little Sparta.

If it looks like it’s never been wet plug it into a power bar so you can flip it off if anything goes ‘wrong’. If you aren’t sure it’s totally dry a day in a warm room wont hurt it (I left mine in the garage for a week but mostly out of apathy).
