Why Republicans Are Defending Israel and Ignoring Ukraine

Two key differences explain why one nation’s plight receives more sympathy than the other’s.

On April 13, the Islamic Republic of Iran launched missiles and drones at Israel. Also on April 13, as well as on April 12, 14, and 15, the Russian Federation launched missiles and drones at Ukraine—including some designed in Iran.

Few of the weapons launched by Iran hit their mark. Instead, American and European airplanes, alongside Israeli and even Jordanian airplanes, knocked the drones and missiles out of the sky.

By contrast, some of the attacks launched by Russia did destroy their targets. Ukraine, acting alone, and—thanks to the Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives—running short on defensive ammunition, was unable to knock all of the drones and missiles out of the sky. On April 12 Russian strikes badly damaged an energy facility in Dnipropetrovsk. On April 13, a 61-year-old woman and 68-year-old man were killed by a Russian strike in Kharkiv. On April 14, an aerial bomb hit an apartment building in Ocheretyne, killing one and injuring two. On April 15, a Russian guided missile hit a school and killed at least two more people in the Kharkiv region.

Why the difference in reaction? Why did American and European jets scramble to help Israel, but not Ukraine?

grue,

Because they love genocide and fascism. Simple as that.

athos77,

tl;dr: no one wants an upset nuclear state (Israel), and the Republicans are thoroughly subject to Russian propaganda, influence and bribes.

harmsy,

Because they think genocide is kinda neat, actually.

admiralteal,

Especially if it's against anyone that can be interpreted as Arab.

homesweethomeMrL,

Crazy Evangelical Crap

Thirdborne,

Those casualties sound kinda miniscule for the war that’s supposedly marching on to Berlin. Hard to give a damn when it’s half a dozen deaths.

dugmeup,

Because they have been bought out by Putler?

treefrog,

They also think once world war 3 happens they all get to go to heaven

With the possible exception of a few like Mike Pence, I don't think they believe in heaven. If they did, they'd be a lot more worried about going to hell.

Nah, they’re hoping to kick off the rapture. Both so they can both mock all the unbelievers as they ascend into heaven as well as assuaging their deep seated anxiety about the hollowness of their faith.

Jax,

This still seems like an insane take, where are the sources on this? I’ve seen other lemmings suggest that conservatives are trying to initiate the rapture, but it still seems unsubstantiated.

Eldritch,

I don’t have any good sources handy right now myself. But I’ve read plenty over the years talking about the Evangelical plan for israel. And it all ties back of course to vagueries in the Book of Revelations. That batshit insane fever dream. Because of course it does.

In Revelations the end times and rapture are preceded by the destruction of Jerusalem and israel. Forget the fact that what we know is Israel didn’t exist at the time this was written. We were talking about Evangelical fundamentalist. They’re are some of the stupidest people you’ll ever meet. And simply warp everything to fit whatever meaning they desire.

And they being so wrong and self-righteously assured of their piety. Believe that they can kick start the rapture by engineering crises in the Middle East to facilitate the destruction of Jerusalem and Israel. That they can force God’s hand, and God would be like it’s all cool bro it had to happen sometime.

So apoplectic that they cannot force the world to do what they think it should. They would rather end everything.
