kylian0087,

the reason why arch gets recommend a lot as a gaming distro is that it is bleeding edge. Their for has very up to date drivers and parches that can help gaming. But with the current state of gaming on Linux this is a bit less of a requirement. most distros are new enough for most games. Exception might be debian LTS or something.

So i totaly agree that choosing something other then arch for gaming is a good option if you are rather new to linux.

kylian0087,

obviously a troll. And a stupid one at that

kylian0087,

Take a look at Borg. It is a very well suited backup tool that has deduplication.

kylian0087,

I mean it is still miles ahead of snaps and the snap store

kylian0087,

For me the vpn and storage is not something I am interested in. Bundles in general though. The 10 custom domains is a nice thing for sure.

kylian0087,

The push notifications would be a issue for me. I am using GrapheneOS without any google services.

Also the calendar i am not 100% sure how I want to do it. I currently use Nextcloud and Caldav. Which for me works great when syncing with Etar on my phone and Evolution mail in the desktop. For my dad I have setup caldavsynchronizer for outlook as that is the email client he has used for years. When i would use Tuta id loose the nextcloud calendar because it can in no way synchronize with Tuta. With proton on the other hand I can use the bride for email and use the calendar how i am currently using it together with Etar on the phone.

On the other hand if say Tuta providers a calendar that is integrated and works with both the email client on the desktop and on the phone. the same goal is accomplished.

kylian0087,

Wouldn’t this be solved with the birdge? I am thinking of going the paid plan anyway due to the custom domains.

kylian0087,

It is a necessary evil. Better make it as good as possible. Hosting your own mail server is not feasible in most cases

kylian0087,

Well proton has been accused of being a honeypot as well.

kylian0087,

Just search protonmail honeypot and you get many results. I am not saying it is true. Just saying because a company gets accused of something doesn’t make it true.

kylian0087,

Regarding email which provider would be best suited if this goes true? Because Tuta is hosted in Germany it seems less optimal then say Proton?

Is the Proton (Mail, VPN, Password Manager) ecosystem any good?

Due to the recent announcement of Proton moving to a non-profit structure (although not becoming fully non-profit) I’ve decided to take another look at them and really, Proton Unlimited is an enticing offer. However, the fact of everything from mail, to accounts, to storage being in one place is somewhat disconcerting. Also I...

kylian0087,

Anymore yeah they used to allow it. A even better option for uploading is seeding to I2P. the bigger we can get i2P the better.

kylian0087,

The official site is best to get started. Personally i find it the most easy to run a container and configure a secondary Firefox profile: geti2p.net/en/

kylian0087,

Also because the google pixel its bootloader can be relocked without much trouble. that is a big part of why GOS only supports pixel phones.

kylian0087,

Odysee ! I use a detention even so if I click a video on YouTube and it is also on odysee it opened odysee instead.

kylian0087,

Like letting keys expire and ddos the aur to name some.

kylian0087,

It was never so much about the hate for GOS as it was for Daniel. Daniel is a absolute genius but has some mental and paranoid issues. Which hurt GOS reputation in the proces, Dont get me wrong I do not hate the guy or GOS at all but I do agree Daniel has some serious issues.

kylian0087,

Only google pixels ere supporter because it are one of the only phones where you can re lock the bootloader

kylian0087,

Htop vim and ncdu to name a few terminal apps.

My friend didn't have a great experience with Linux

I have been daily driving Linux for over two years now and I have switched distros many times. So, when my friend bought a new laptop, I convinced him to install Linux Mint on it. I asked him if he wanted to dual boot, he said no because it would fill up all his storage. We installed Linux Mint. The other day, he wanted to play...

kylian0087,

As someone who daily drives Opensuse TW and have used arch, gentoo etc. I would highly recommend mint for a new user most of the time. It is one of the distros that works out of the box without any tinkering. Want to add a printer on opensue using yast? good luck. in mint it is a few clicks. just to name a example

Smallest Security/Privacy Focused Distro Help?

I’ve been doing some scouring and my search results are coming back confusing. Usually either incomplete information, or some kind of sales spam, so I’m reaching out in the hopes of recommendations for actual linux users and fans. I am looking for a very small, tiny even, security/privacy focused distro. I don’t mind doing...

kylian0087,

Maybe Alpine is suited? Although the whonix VM requirement will not be pleasant or work at all. But that is more of a hardware limitation.

kylian0087,

IBM Maximo :) Both are expensive but not for you average consumer.

kylian0087,

Anyone has recommendations on where to find information on who to vote for for the European parliament elections?

Distributions intended for hardware diagnosis and other related utilities

Within the GNU/Linux ecosystem there are all kinds of tools to diagnose the system, or rather, to check the state of the hardware, but there are few distributions specifically designed to perform this task, or at least that I know of, because the only distribution I know that is intended to diagnose the computer, (Or at...

kylian0087,

Something like gparted ? It is specifically designed to manage disks and partitions from a live OS.

kylian0087,

To add to this. Take a look at the fog server project. It allows you to PXE boot and pull and push images in a automated way.

kylian0087,

Personally I am using rocky Linux. I wonder how the 2 compare nowadays

kylian0087,

You have been free for a while then i suppose.

kylian0087,

It is a entire ERP/CMS suite. It might be to big for most when starting out. However, it allows for growth with the buisness.

kylian0087,

Arch linux? :) joke aside perhaps something with btrfs support is handy. you can easily rollback if something breaks. For parental control don’t give the kid sudo/root. other then that restricting websites and stuff is more easily done on a firewall outside of the kid its control.

Almost any of the larger distros will suffice i think. Personally a fan of opensuse tumbleweed which has btrfs support out of the box. use a DE like kde/gnome and i think you have a very solid start

kylian0087, (edited )

i partially agree here. Comparing something like Nix vs Gentoo is like comparing cars and plains. sure their both vehicles but that’s about the it.

kylian0087,

lol. I am the exact same. Trying to work around stuff and bypassing just about anything thought me how most things work.

kylian0087,

IPA beer is good for sure. freeIPA is a central way to manage Linux devices. manage users ssh keys and even limiting sudo commands with sudo rules. and some other things. It can not do everything active directory does but their sure are a load of similarities.

kylian0087,

For me it is partially the way canonical pushes snaps and forces it on to users. More so they are slow and the proprietary back end is a huge downside. Some snaps are know broken and cause more harm then good like the steam snap for example. Steam actively discourages users from even using it.

kylian0087, (edited )

Sudo apt install Firefox

Ubuntu then installs the snap version.

Is there a way to download a Windows.iso anonymously?

Hello, whenever I try to download the Windows.iso from Microsoft, it blocks me because I’m using a VPN. I don’t really want to buy proxies or anything for this. I tried to download it off public WiFi but it was way too slow. I only need Windows for updating the EC firmware on one of my older laptops....

kylian0087,

Not sure if it is still possible. But I believe you can on Tor if you spoof your user agent to be a black berry or some other device. Then you can grab the direct download link to the iso and download it over Tor. Been some time since I have done this though. Keep in mind this is from memory so it might be slightly different.

kylian0087,

No idea. but I remember the direct download link for the iso to became available due to it.

kylian0087,

Yeah i did this until they make the entire homepage blank if you keep history off. Very annoying.

kylian0087,

I hope the global catalog gets finished one day for freeipa.

kylian0087,

My experience is quite the opposite. I have and still use both and find samba one of the more unreliable things. Freeipa does what it does with no issues.

kylian0087,

A duress password to remove selected profiles would be amazing. So it still unlocks but quietly removes the profiles you are worried about.

kylian0087,

If you do go digging you would get caught. Safest way is removal in those situations. I rather have some data removed which preferably I have backups up. Then have to risk jail time in some country.

kylian0087,

I believe Germany is working on that. Recently they have started to migrate 30K systems or so from windows to Linux.

kylian0087,

It is so stupid… Why make drama instead of making linux better as a whole. A sad thing to see in general.

kylian0087, (edited )

If you try a distro that does it by default then it is no more complicated then ext4 for the user. The distro will setup things for you. I know that opensuse Tumbleweed and Fedora Workstation set this up by default. Manually configuring is how ever a bit more complicated.

kylian0087,

Yeah I was thinking the same. Perhaps make a sticky post about it once a week.
