I don’t think that this one is as reproducible and declarative as NixOS or Guix.

BTW, can someone recommend me nice alternative for fast and free static website hosting?

I tried GitHub Pages, but I couldn’t get it working with subdomains.

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Thanks, I’ll try it

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Unfortunately I can’t do that with my ISP. Cloudflare tunnel would be an option, but out of obvious reasons I don’t want to use it.

I think I’ll try Codeberg Pages.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.

Aren’t mods in BG3 closed alpha or something?

Ah, what a reliable and unbiased source

How is everyone handling the 2FA requirement for GitHub? (docs.github.com)

Just wondering what people are using to meet the 2FA requirement GitHub has been rolling out. I don’t love the idea of having an authenticator app installed on my phone just to log into GitHub. And really don’t want to give them my phone number just to log in....

Ubuntu Server (for school) -> Fedora (daily driver for a month) -> Arch (same as fedora) -> NixOS (it’s almost a year and I think that I’ll stay with NixOS)

starman,

Actually, I’d like a bigger and thicker laptop

starman,

Nice list!

I would add RiMusic (ViMusic fork, since ViMusic haven’t been updated in a long time) and maybe InnerTune

What is this? This is a metasearch engine that gets results from other engines, and strips away all of the tracking parameters and Microsoft/globohomo bullshit they add. Most of the other alternatives to Google jack themselves off about being ““privacy respecting”” or whatever the fuck but it always turns out to be a total lie, and I just got fed up with their shit honestly. Alternatives like Searx or YaCy all fucking sucks so I made my own thing.

Looks promising. Do you know if 4get supports bangs (like in duckduckgo, for example !nixpkgs lemmy searches for Lemmy on Nixpkgs’ website)

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Unfortunate. Thanks for reply.

I personally use AGPL, which is often seen as one of the strongest, most restrictive, licenses.

Good choice, I use it as well, but please keep in mind that AGPL is not restrictive

Are GMOs forbidden by Christian law?

No, AFAIK they aren’t

I think it’s just a joke and not a real movement or something

PopOS would be better (IMO)

I really appreciate that they’re working on new desktop environment. I’ll probably switch from Hyprland to Cosmic once it’s available on NixOS

starman,

Yeah, but sort of unofficially… I wait for this: github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/259641

Shell sold millions of carbon credits for carbon that was never captured, report finds (www.cbc.ca)

Shell sold millions of carbon credits for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that never happened, allowing the company to turn a profit on its fledgling carbon capture and storage project, according to a new report by Greenpeace Canada....

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Carbon capture will ONLY work if the energy you use to capture the carbon does not add more carbon to the atmosphere (nuclear, wind, solar)

Even in this case carbon capture is stupid. Why not use that “green” energy to replace carbon-emitting power plants?

X11 is a protocol too. Xorg is the binary you are talking about

Aux is more similar to Nix, than Guix is.

Guix uses the same concepts, but still is very different.

You can contribute to Nixpkgs without GitHub account

Why not dual-license?

Copyleft for true FOSS experience or paid option for companies.

starman,

It’s not open source. Only source available unfortunately.

There is no guarantee that play store build contains the same code as GitHub repository. Ideally you’d need to compile apps yourself.

But most of the time stuff like vaultwarden is trustworthy enough.

Got tracked down for my school reunion

Today I was contacted by someone at work. She graduated school with me and our 20 year reunion was coming up. Why did she contact me at work? It was the only way they were able to track me down. I was included in promotional material by name. She told me I "was the hardest to track down"and I had to smile....

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

I have a website that shows up when someone searches my name on the internet and an email there. This way people are able to contact me and I don’t have to use any spyware like Facebook.

But whether that works for you depends on your threat model, I guess.

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Is it just a bare bones website

No, it’s more work-oriented/portfolio type of site and it’s hosted on Cloudflare Pages under my domain.

But in this case, bare bones website would be sufficient

starman,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Yes, but you need special keyboard for it:

On Android, when an app needs something like camera or location or whatever, you have to give it permission. Why isn’t there something like this on Linux desktop? Or at least not by default when you install something through package manager.

  • Facebook Messenger? Not working (probably because I use it without Facebook account)
  • SMS/RCS? Not working (looks like it requires Google account)

Seems like it’s not ready yet
