Also a Canadian. I heard Rick Mercer tonight he spoke for about 1 hr and he did highlight the right evangelical nonsense. Shit is bleeding up here and has been for decades. It’s scary AF. There are many people where there is no Canadian identity. It’s a proxy for American Identity and as such they’re as regressive as you would expect.

I’ve been pondering this one because I grew up a country boy and now live in the city. What you’re talking about still exists. I live in Newmarket, ON and still rarely lock my doors and so all the things you mention.

John Ralston Saul said, and I’m paraphrasing, what made Canadians special was the uniqueness in how we came to be. Our relationship with “the other” now defined as immigrants, comes from a natural place of understanding and respect. You become a Canadian but you also keep your identity because Canada is made stronger by that inter-weaving of social fabrics.

I will agree that our country is hurting but I would argue the biggest threat to our nation is the immigration of American style identity politics that started back in the 80’s and has since escalated to a wave of “Fuck Trudeau”.

I have said before what truly scares me is that the Conservative movement in all their bigoted while male centric policies has realized that they can synergize their vitriol with people who have come here from brutally regressive countries when it comes to the treatment of women, gays and minorities.

Big picture we are going in the right direction but it’s going to be a rough decade or so.

As a Canadian I am scared shitless for a future when a deranged America threatens us for our fresh water.

The world is fucked. This is just the beginning. Europe is also prepping for an increase in migrants from northern Africa.

People are going to die in the millions and unfortunately a lot of them will be poor and brown which means collectively we won’t give a shit.

I stand by what I’ve come to the conclusion on over the last little while. The underlying problem is the Jewish diaspora has not healed from the historical persecution they face. That is quite frankly everyone’s problem. What they’re doing is 100% wrong but when taken in the context of “hurt people hurt people” it makes sense. I don’t know the path forward, but I do know it’s not going to happen without some very brave leaders in the Jewish community to step up and call it like it is.

Ive also been mulling the idea that Palestinians needs to charter their own Truth & Reconciliation to lay it all out in the open.

Because there is no answer. All systems are corruptable and capitalism at least puts that corruption out in the open. I’d argue the problem is that government stopped giving a shit about its civilians instead choosing to trust in the market to solve all problems which we are learning that is not the case.

Things will not start changing until government grows a pair and starts doing what it’s supposed to do.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but I’m sitting here genuinely going “what the fuck?!”. I’m happy for you in recognizing and killing the addiction even if it took you multiple attempts.

If I can implore people anything its to understand that the problem is addiction and it comes in many forms. To many people they quit one addiction and they move to another because as an example, gambling is not the problem. The unhealthy relationship to it is

I’m saying this as someone who is immensely close with a functional alcoholic and when they have “quit” the alcohol is simply replaced with something else. The addiction is the underlying problem.

I’ve said this before on Lemmy but my honest opinion is many Jewish people have not healed from The Holocaust.

I humbly submit the nation of Israel is committing genocide because deep down they are still profoundly hurting from WW2 and rightly so.

TVO was a godsend allowing us to watch Black Adder, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who.

Omg same! A part of me died when SNATM transitioned to his kid and then he died. My love of movies comes from him. I’m 46 but one of my favourite movies is the Angela Lansbury “The Picture of Dorian Gray” from 1945.

We also forgot Prisoners of Gravity! Seeing interviews with comic, sci-fi and fantasy authors talking about their craft!

The 80’s truly was a magical time for TV in Ontario.

I’ll tell you the nasty truth. You’re right, but if a politician ran a campaign to strip Israel of all their benefits of American Exceptionalism they will be crushed in the polls. They won’t just lose they will be decimated.

Why?

Because despite what you say, many of those Jews you are referring to are actually Zionists once cutting off the hand that feeds their homeland is threatened.

Non-Jews need to understand that unlike Christianity there is a level of identity politics steeped in nationalism, religion and culture are all so heavily intertwined it’s hard to break through. I’m speaking from experience. 3 of my kids are Jewish.

The argument is the more you “enjoy” something the less enjoyable it becomes.

I love music but am not an audiophile but intimately aware of them.

The example I use is this.

I love music. My library is massive consisting of MP3s of various quality some of which are horrible rips with huge compression and loss.

I know audiophiles. They stress lossless compression and will go out of their way to find that Tool album in FLAC and will shit on anything less.

There’s a fundamental difference between me saying 'i think the Queen album ‘News Of The World’ is amazing" and “you really can’t appreciate the album unless you hear it in the original vinyl pressing”

Lord only knows. Speaking from personal experience I’m an externalizer so I’ve never had a thought of suicide however I have been on the record telling people there are times when I wish everyone else was dead.

I think it’s the end result that sought after not the action itself. To be alone.
