misk, in Is there something like open_agb_firm for DS games?
@misk@sopuli.xyz avatar

You could set up a forwarder for a pretty seamless experience or go with a DS flashcart. Personally I always found DS on 3DS pretty ugly due to scaling so I recommend getting DS Lite or DSi while they are still dirt cheap.

didnt_readit,

You can actually hold the start button while launching DA games on the 3DS and they will play without scaling. Makes the size of the images about the same size as a DS Lite (depending on which 3DS you have of course, XL will be larger).

IMO it’s the best way to play DS games on 3DS as I agree the scaling looks awful.

I own a N3DS and DSI (both non-XL). DS games on N3DS with scaling disabled are uncomfortably small compared to DSI. It might not bother you that much if you’re used to DS Lite but those black borders just compound on how off it looks like.

didnt_readit,

Yeah that’s a fair take. I also have an actual DSi that I use with a flash cart to play DS games, but if I only have my 3DS I feel like the smaller screen with weird borders still looks better than the crappy scaling, but I agree neither way is really ideal unfortunately.

Finally. I thought it's never going to happen.

didnt_readit,

Me too! Awesome surprise drop

Yttra, in Today I learnt that you can have a maximum of 3000 photos on your 3DS's SD card

Oh huh, the Switch has something similar… You can’t have more than 1,000 videos or 10,000 photos on a micro SD, or 100 videos and 1,000 photos on internal memory.

I’m not exactly sure why, but I bet it has something to do with how it keeps track of them

graymess, in GitHub - skyfloogle/red-viper: A Virtual Boy emulator for the 3DS

This sounds awesome. Any recommended games to try for someone totally new to the console?

kratoz29,

I haven’t tried it, but I said to myself that once this would be possible the first game I would try is the Wario game, so maybe check out that title haha, I might do it as well.

didnt_readit,

Wario Land hands down is the best game on the Virtual Boy IMO. Give that a play first, it’s a really solid Wario Land game that makes good use of the 3D effects and even without the 3D part is just a good game (if you liked Wario Land on GB anyway).

After that just give them all a try, there’s only 22 official games on the system haha.

Mint_Raccoon, in Question about side effects of region unlocking
@Mint_Raccoon@kbin.social avatar

To answer your question about system updates, it's almost always safe to update and there's no reason not to update as long as your CFW (Luma) is fully updated. System updates are only an issue on OFW, since the updates are basically just for patching the exploits used to get CFW in the first place.

As for the limitations of region changing, The Guide has that covered on their page for the process.

Another really important thing is that you should never follow any guide other than the one I previously linked. You especially should not follow a video guide because they get outdated very quickly and may promote old and/or unsafe methods of hacking the console.

Arbiter, in Question about side effects of region unlocking

You can update games through hShop, yea.

DLCs are also on the hShop.

Scrof, in 3DS games lack style

I agree, such a weak console nowhere near the glory of DS.

Secret300,

The thing is, the DS was weaker and had better 3D games because they weren’t fuckin chibis. I really just hate chibis and wanted to rant

kadu, in 3DS games lack style
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

This might be a side effect of searching “top 15 3DS games” and going from that list. Most of them are filled with JRPGs, and JRPGs on the 3DS surely do love to use the chibi artstyle - the 3DS can’t handle that many polygons at once, so simplified models make sense, and a chibi artstyle fits the genre and most of the target audience.

But there are plenty of counter examples of games that might not make the list, but have their own style. Though yes, most will have simplified geometry. Let’s see:

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • Resident Evil Revelations
  • Metroid Samus Returns
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Star Fox 64 3D
  • Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward.
  • Super Street Fighter IV: 3D
  • Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D
  • Gunman Clive
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
  • Rayman 3D

That’s a good point. Must be the low resolution. Have you tried Xenoblade Chronicles 3D? I’m curious to hear what people think about the style of that game on the New 3DS

Secret300,

The low resolution doesn’t bother me. The fuckin chibis do. Xenoblade was alright but I didn’t get far because the combat bored me, I do plan on going back to it soon though. I just hate the tiny bodies and big head character design in most games. Phantasy star 0 for the DS had a low resolution but still looks better than any rune factory game because they aren’t chibis

Secret300, in Say hi, don't be shy
  1. some kid in school was selling his for $50. That one is broke now :( but I got another one
  2. kingdom hearts
  3. Ever Oasis
  4. Everyday at lunch in highschool me and 2 friends would play smash the entire 40 min instead of eating. By the time I graduated I had 600 hours in smash
  5. ocarina of time. Never finished it. Got really discouraged cause I got spoiled when I started playing it for the first time 5 years ago

Secret300, in Discussion - What games are you playing right now?

I have so many games I want to get through but always go back to Kingdom hearts, Smash, or Mario kart

Secret300, in What are your favourite chill games?

Ever Oasis

Secret300, in Favorite Obscure 3ds Games?

Not sure if it counts as obscure but definitely not mentioned much.

Ever Oasis: single player town builder/adventure dungeon puzzle. It’s like a mix between legend of Zelda and animal crossing but falls a little short on the town building. Still insanely fun though. Wish it had multiplayer

Secret300, in The Most Ambitious Manga Fighting Game - Jump Ultimate Stars

Is there an English patch for the game?

kratoz29,

Yes there is, I don’t have the link on hand, but you can check on the discord all the info you’d need :)
