Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard

https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/11/23779039/microsoft-activision-blizzard-ftc-trial-win

From the article, quoting Judge Corley:

... the Court finds the FTC has not shown a likelihood it will prevail on its claim this particular vertical merger in this specific industry may substantially lessen competition. To the contrary, the record evidence points to more consumer access to Call of Duty and other Activision content. The motion for a preliminary injunction is therefore DENIED.

Horn of Balance - an indie 2D zelda-like

I'm developing 'Horn of Balance', a 2D zelda-like featuring 12 non-linear dungeons, 2 interconnected worlds and a TON of secrets.

Right now, the project is live on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hornofbalance/horn-of-balance) and we've almost hit the funding goal with just 24 hours left!

There's also a free demo on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2738140/Horn_of_Balance/) and Itch.

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have!

JohnEdwa,

They make consoles for a larger target market/audience than Sony or Microsoft, because that makes them more money than trying to compete directly with them. Wii sold over 100 units and the Switch is currently sitting at around 130 million putting it in third place overall, only behind the Nintendo DS and Playstation 2.

So they most likely won’t, as their formula clearly works (other than the Wii U, it was a flop).

Fredy1422,

Im glad that my pre Nintendo wfc Mk Wii profile got preserved when wiimifi.de became avilable

That article is a bit out of date and wasn’t really true anyway. The people who are creating Pretendo, who wrote the blog post this article is based on, did an update on the situation, specifically calling out the media for their sloppy articles:

With that said, some outlets did a less than stellar job at reporting our last post, not covering some topics fully or accurately.

TL;DR: Many of the issues have already been fixed, even going so far as there are now entirely new servers in place to act as a proxy for Amazons servers to work around some security related incompatibility issues.

freebread,

Thank you for clarifying- still want to get back in for some Splatoon 1 before the end

Q: What are the five (5) video games from the 20th Century that you want to be able to play again today? And why?

  • Maybe you no longer have time, or, there are no modern ports or adaptation.

I'll start with mine.

(in no particular order)

It seems easier to play than , but as you progress, it is actually challenging. I love the challenge.

  1. / (DOS version specifically).

If I am not mistaken, before there was the franchise, there was “Empire”. It was a fun game. There is available on , but I miss the DOS version that I played a lot.

A very fun game. Once I start playing this, time flies fast. I miss this game.

Here's a video of it, it's hard to explain this game as there are many features/gameplay “modes” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBJ0q52bXJM

Modern games today are usually limited to certain themes. If it's flight, it's flight. If it's tank, it's tank. If it's strategy, that's it. Carrier Command have it all.

  1. / (DOS)

Years before the era of came. RPG-ish space game that made me felt exploring space. This was new to me then and I enjoyed it.

  1. / (DOS)

I know, we can still play this today, however, what I miss with this game is the 2 player mode.

You just play with your friend and blast each other to friendly matches and laughter.

Being able to play 2P mode, face-to-face, is something that we have taken for granted, and now we're all just virtual avatars in online games (even online multiplayer games).

So, how about you?

Halo: Master Chief Collection is an absolute broken mess

Last weekend, I picked up the Master Chief Collection from the Steam sale with a friend. We wanted to play through Halo 1 again, but it was completely unplayable.

You can't always join another player's session.
Occasionally, nothing happens when starting a mission.
On certain missions the game just completely freezes.
At certain points the game locks up leaving you unable to move.

It's just awful.

@gaming @gaming @gaming

realcaseyrollins,

I've had a generally pleasant experience with the game. All the issues I came across--friends not being able to join matches, lag while on multiplayer--was because of cross-platform issues, one of us was on the MCC version while another was in the original release version, or my own poor internet connection.

Streamer,

I had some issues in coop, but we managed to finish all the games.

Doods,

The lightest, this makes makes me think, what actually constitutes a gaming laptop, I have an old Intel 530 laptop, I can play Abe’s Oddysee on it, and probably fallout, which makes it a gaming laptop, why do gamers chase the latest hardware when for mere cents they can get a good experience, an experience which was a dream to many.

Fiivemacs,

It’s just marketing terms and they carry zero weight (lol) or reasoning anymore. Best to ignore anything a company says and just look at the hardware and its use case. Companies will continue to lie to consumers and nothing will change that

AEW Fight Forever Digital Foundry Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff7C881qwzc

I've been strongly considering picking this up. I was a big fan of Yuke's old WCW games on N64 and this seems to really lean into that lineage.

@gaming

KennyOmega,

It is such a fun game! It really does remind me of the oldschool wrestling games. They do a great job with making the wrestlers feel unique and exactly like they act on TV (Orange Cassidy, for example, can fight a whole match worth his hands in his pockets). There are a bunch of fun Easter eggs that I won’t spoil for you.

It is noticeable, though, that they didn’t have the resources to devote to the create a character feature. However, this is something that would naturally be updated as time goes by.

Tag team matches are a bit fiddly because you can’t tell your partner to come tag (as far as I know), and sometimes you’ll go to tag him but he’ll come into the ring instead. But the game doesn’t take itself too seriously, so these are minor issues.

All of the mini games are a blast except for one (in my opinion) and they just add a bit of a distraction that spices things up. If you don’t like them, you don’t need to play them, there is no forcing the player one way or the other.

latewizard,

I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks fun.

@gaming Playing Video games can adjust my mood so much that I might forget my sorrows.

Rentlar,

Good games give me the same feeling as reading a good fictional novel: I get transported into the universe, following the character or whatever action is unfolding.

More generally, games give the player a goal to achieve, whether that’s winning over others, cooperating with others, completing a campaign, collecting a bunch of goodies (or all the goodies), relaxing and enjoying scenery, crafting min-maxed playthroughs, or trying over and over again to beat a level.

Being focused on this goal can help keep your mind off of whatever is troubling you in the present.
