dignity, in Most Stable Linux Distros: 5 versions of Linux We Recommend

I use Linux Mint since Ubuntu switched to Unity (R.I.P.) =)

CowsLookLikeMaps,

Ubuntu ditched Unity for Gnome 5 years ago. Mint is great too though.

ToNIX,

That was only 2 years before this post, which is 3 years old šŸ¤·

catsarebadpeople,

Shit is getting weird

Anachron, in Thinking about switching back to Linux

Iā€™d give Solus (Budgie) a try. Itā€™s really well put together. Iā€™ve tried nearly all DEs and I think itā€™s the best to return to Linux.

valkyrie, in Valve's ACTUALLY working on a Steam CONSOLE!

Honestly I think it will be a flop.

meldrik,

Oh boy

secret300,

Iā€™ve never been more happy that someone was wrong, sorry it had to be you

birokop, in Gnu Guix System Review

Isnā€™t this missing the entire point of guix?

fishinthecalculator,

You mean reproducibility and bootstrappability?

adrianmalacoda,

Being a free software GNU distribution is also the point of Guix, and itā€™s part of what attracted me to it (although its practical abilities are nice as well).

fishinthecalculator,

Yes I definitely agree: free software is also a requirement for bootstrappability and reproducibility.

OsrsNeedsF2P, in Darling is like Wine for Windows on Linux, but runs macOS software

From what I remember a few years ago, itā€™s not like Wine where you can run a bunch of applications (simply because theyā€™re not as big and donā€™t have the contributors). So you wonā€™t be running any GUI apps at all, just some low level stuff here and there.

AnonymousLemmy, in Wine 8.0 Compatibility Layer Is Out Now for Running Windows Apps on Linux

Nice, what new features does it have? Since proton is based off wine does that mean it will benefit proton as well?

shreddy_scientist,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

The article highlights some of the bigger upgrades include finalized PE format conversion, upgraded ā€œWindows-likeā€ WoW64 mode plus better Vulkan support. But Wine updating will still require Proton to make changes before these features are included I believe

RedBlackUnity, in Firefox 113 Promises Support for Animated AV1 Images, Debian Package, and More
@RedBlackUnity@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Sick. I literally just switched from Ubuntu to Debian

shreddy_scientist,
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

Just curious, what made you choose Debian over say Fedora or Arch option?

RedBlackUnity,
@RedBlackUnity@lemmygrad.ml avatar

No great reason, really. Iā€™ve tried Arch before and it needs a bit more manual administration than I prefer. The goal was to get off of Ubuntu and, having never used Fedora and Ubuntu being close to Debian, I just kind of went with what Iā€™m more familiar with.

shreddy_scientist,

neosheo, in Dear BlendOS, you claim to be immutable, yet you have changed a core part of the system. Curious.

Doesnā€™t immutable distro mean the root filesystem is readonly and programs are created with their own unqiue environment?

This post acts like the code for the OS should never change.

So if a critical CVE is reported they cant update ths OS because its supposed to be immutable?

tsugu,
@tsugu@slrpnk.net avatar

The joke here is very much just that. Immutable = not changing, therefore any update violates the idea of immutable distros.

bobslaede, in Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political!

I donā€™t see how his, very reasonable, views makes Linux itself (more?) political. What is the point of this post?

mFcGlNBcfr,

I donā€™t think the title is good, but I do think itā€™s notable to some extent. With people having weird, shitty opinions, itā€™s nice to see someone who is relatively famous in the tech community for having somewhat sane opinions and being vocal about it.

In my experience, the Linux community has got its own bunch of free speech weirdos who would reject some of these political points (especially the trans position), so I do think in that context it is kind of important.

eighty, in Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political!

I can relate to the ā€œhow the fuck is being a concerned human being extreme/poltical?ā€ energy in the post hard.

empireOfLove, in Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political!

Linus gives exactly zero fucks about saying exactly whatā€™s on his mind. And itā€™s almost always massively based. Heā€™s always been great about that, we donā€™t deserve such a great mind.

shreddy_scientist,

Fedora is also worth a look, Debian was my first distro so I always appreciate keeping up with it. But Fedora is SUPER stable and also a top option for privacy and security, so I switched over.

flibbertigibbet, in Linus Torvalds -- Creator of Linux -- defends gun regulation, woke communists, womens rights AND trans rights. Linux is political!

Political? For everyone outside of America thatā€™s just common sense.

xyon,

Hello Iā€™m a trans person from the UK here to tell you this is sadly not the case at all.

estebanlm, in What distro(s) do you use?
@estebanlm@lemmy.ml avatar

Manjaro. I am a guy of habits, so I never really distro-hopped, I once tried to install Arch and failed to configure everything so I tried endeavour and failed too (which would mean I am not a tech guy either ;). Ultimately, Iā€™d say that the distribution does not matters much once you are used to it, you can always get what you want from any of them. The only thing I really like in comparison with others is pacman :)
