If there’s a game that can’t run on Linux in the current year then that’s intentional and it’s not worth anyone’s money.

LinyosT,

You almost have to go out of your way to make a game incompatible with linux. Considering wine/proton and their various forks cover the vast majority of things at this point.

Even with ACs, the two most used ones completely support Linux. One is completely out of the box, maybe even as far as linux support being opt out. The other requires you to contact its developers to enable compatibility their end iirc.

For me Linux gaming is Steam/Proton. If is works with Steam/Proton, I am playing them. I find that native Linux games are not updated regularly or at all. And Steam wants games to run with the Steam deck. And they are willing work to make that happen.

And game companies know there are a lot of Steam decks out there. And it is not hard to put some effort to see that it runs on that equipment.

All this is a big help for the Linux community. Many gamers don't know that they don't need to buy windows to game. Linux/Steam/Proton is a great option. That is why I make a point to tell people that I am playing Baldur's Gate 3 on my Linux Ubuntu gaming PC. This is how I found out that Linux can play games and switch from Windows. Another Linux gamer told me it was possible.

txrx1010,

Agreed. It’s just so sad to me that GOG to this day does not seem to understand their target audience. Seems to me that people who value DRM-free Games overlap vastly with the group of Linux users and still GOG Galaxy is not available on Linux. I would absolutely love GOG Galaxy natively on Linux with Proton integration. Sure we can run it with Lutris etc. but this has been asked from GOG for years. I tried buying everything on GOG instead of Steam until that point where that whole Proton and Steam Deck integration happened. Now I buy everything on steam, just for convenience. I would love to buy everything from GOG but there are just to many hoops to jump through.

Yeah I can’t play rainbow 6 siege since I switched to Linux but I’m staying strong. Fuck ubisoft. And fuck my friends for trying to make me go back to windoz.

HiddenLayer5, in It either runs on Linux or refund

Especially if they use an engine that natively supports Linux, they have no excuse not to release a Linux version.

Elderos,

There are tons of reasons my dude. You can still have platform-dependant technologies in your game even if the base engine itself supports linux.

I've been gaming exclusively on Linux since 2014. Gaming on Linux is so good nowadays, thanks to Proton, there are so many amazing titles available to play. Proton makes it all easy - thanks to it, it's just a matter of hitting install and play on Steam (in most cases).

There are so many of them, If something doesn't run on Linux, I just don't care. My backlog of great games is so big, who cares about some singular titles that are not available.

I've recently been playing Baldurs Gate 3, ARMORED CORE VI, Anno 1800 and Battlebit Remastered on my Ubuntu rig. All run great. Neither need any special tweaks (I own them on Steam).

BG3 and Battlebit Remastered are especially stellar.

I recommend BG3 to anyone who likes true roleplaying games with great writing, reactivity and player agency.

Battlebit Remastered is a great multiplayer title with massive 256 player battles and it sits somewhere between Battlefield and Squad (a mixture of arcade and mil-sim elements).

BaalInvoker, in It either runs on Linux or refund

Complex and recent games run on Linux these days.

Not allowing run a game in Linux is, nowadays, a choice from its developer rather then a causality. Proton is a really powerful tool!

If a game don’t run in Linux, via Proton or natively, that’s dev issue that actively blocked Linux.

Maticzpl,

All the games o can’t play on linux are exactly this Roblox and their anticheat blocking wine Tarkov and it’s anticheat etc.

Even VR games with my quest 2 can run on linux just fine

Yerbouti,

What? I thought Steam VR wasn’t working, I’v checked recently. How did you get it working?

priapus,

Steam VR works fine, but you need a headset that supports Steam VR without needing other software. The main options are the HTC Vive and the Valve Index.

Elderos,

It is almost always due to the anticheat programs.

BaalInvoker,

Still… There are anticheats that allow Linux, like EAC, Hyperion and many others… If they choose one that does not allow Linux, or choose one that allow Linux but block it, it’s a dev issue

cooopsspace, in It either runs on Linux or refund

Blaming the Publishers and Devs because it’s actually pretty hard to fuck up a game so that it doesn’t work on proton these days

Or do as I do.

  1. Buy game.
  2. Never play it.

I have a problem.

Or as I do:

  1. Watch videos of Cyberpunk
  2. Think of buying it
  3. Realize I still haven’t finished Mass Effect
  4. Never actually buy Cyberpunk.

Currently I’m thinking of Baldur’s gate 3, but you know… I’ll probably get around to it in a few years.

INeedMana,
@INeedMana@lemmy.world avatar

Buying any game after 3-5 years is the way to go. The bugs are fixed, patches are out, so mods are stable and most of the time you can find a sale where it costs 10-20€. And if you forget about it before that time, that means the game was not worth it

SSUPII, in It either runs on Linux or refund

One of the refunds reasons you can select is “the game doesn’t run on my PC”. This is completely valid.

It’s not as simple as you think it is. First, we use Plausible instead instead of Google Analytics, so tracking data is not being given to Google. If the choice was purely up to System76’s web team, use of Google services wouldn’t be required. However, you’ll be hard pressed to find any online store that accepts online payments without a captcha service, because most payment processors require it. System76’s payment processor also requires it, and will not allow you to substitute your own solution or bypass that requirement. Same as said here: lemmy.world/comment/3137069

Customer services and other web-facing frontends are also a constant target of attacks, so a captcha service is required.

patchwork,

Michael, thank you for responding, but Google’s reCAPTCHA isn’t only required for payment on your site, it’s required just to send a message for customer service or to contact sales as I have done both recently. There are plenty of payment provider’s that to not mandate Google services. Personally I enjoy a lot of Google services when I choose to use them, but being mandated to use Google, as my child is forced to do attending school makes me wonder we companies like System 76 perpetuate this trend of the government and private industry forcing people to use services instead of letting consumers make the choice themselves in the so-called “free market.”

mmstick,
@mmstick@lemmy.world avatar

Customer services and other web-facing frontends are a constant target of attacks, so a captcha service is required. This whole comment is hyperbole, honestly.

patchwork,

Stripe is one of the largest payment providers on the Internet, they recommend hCaptcha, not Alphabet’s reCAPTCHA in their docs, so it’s obviously a choice. Please don’t proclaim to be “Extremely concerned” with customer privacy and choose a service provided by a data harvesting advertising company to save money when a privacy preserving option is available.

spez,

they recommend hCaptcha, not Alphabet’s reCAPTCHA in their docs

From : stripe.com/docs/disputes/prevention/card-testing#…

Card testers often use automated scripts that can be blocked using a CAPTCHA. Google’s reCAPTCHA is often effective for blocking card testing.

mmstick,
@mmstick@lemmy.world avatar

Read that document a bit closer. They recommend Google reCAPTCHA.

robinj1995, in System76 values and ethics (Opinion)

Purist, hard-line stuff like this will honestly just get you nowhere in 2023. I get where you’re coming from, but it’s simply not realistic. This is what browser extensions are for.

words_number,

I don’t understand what’s not realistic about expecting from a company that markets itself as privacy focused to not add surveillance fascist services to their website. It’s not like they demand system76 to implement something crazy difficult. Quite the opposite, they just want them to not do something. That shit doesn’t add itself to a website. So just don’t fucking do it and you’re good. What’s unrealistic about that?

whodoctor11, in System76 values and ethics (Opinion)
@whodoctor11@lemmy.ml avatar

You see, even Mozilla uses reCaptcha and other Google APIs. Companies that “fight for freedom” will only do the minimal. Still, I think is worthy to send an email do System 76 with this reclamation.

They just resell Chinese laptops anyway, or used to. I opted for a Framework laptop this time.

mmstick,
@mmstick@lemmy.world avatar

They are not “resold”. The laptops are custom-ordered and manufactured in Taiwan. The same as virtually every computer you buy. Taiwan would be very unhappy to see comments claiming they’re Chinese.

PerogiBoi, in Thinking about buying a Surface Pro 4/5
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

A thread made just for me.

I have a i5 256gb Surface Pro 5 running Pop_OS. Prior to that, I ran Ubuntu and prior to that I ran Fedora for a year or so.

Battery life is much worse than with Windows thanks to Windows keeping secrets about suspended sleep or something. I’m not a wizard I just follow guides and fart so that’s the most technical explanation you’ll get on that.

Webcam doesn’t work on any of the distros, you’ll want to install the Linux Surface kernel after installation to enable touchscreen and pen support. Not an issue for me but could be if you use it a lot.

After all that though, Linux of most flavours works very well. I fully removed Windows as I was getting issues with GRUB bootloader forgetting that Windows was installed. Fedora never had that issue but Ubuntu and it’s flavours were mean n rude on me.

Pen support is really good but Linux treats it as a mouse. That said, booting up Krita and drawing is a pretty good experience. Not as flawless as on Windows but very similar.

Fedora installation worked pretty flawlessly with a dualboot into Windows so I’d recommend that if you still want to keep Windows.
