"It's going to be a bloody disaster": Tell me again about how the second road tunnel under Sydney Harbour won't make congestion worse?

"Civil engineer Les Wielinga, a former CEO at the now-defunct Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), made the fiery comments at a NSW parliamentary inquiry into the bungled Rozelle Interchange.

"The Western Harbour Tunnel, which is under construction, will allow drivers travelling between the inner west and the North Shore to bypass the CBD.

"Entries and exits to the tunnel will lie at the Ernest Street interchange in Cammeray and near the Falcon Street interchange at North Sydney.

"'It's going to be a bloody disaster,' Mr Wielinga told the upper house committee on Friday.

"Paul Forward, another former CEO of the RTA, told the inquiry he was concerned about the project's design.

"'You've now got three motorways coming out into this short area, and whilst I would recognise there are some exit points, some off-ramps, those motorways are now all going into the Lane Cove Tunnel,' he said.

"'A large number of lanes are going into two lanes at the Lane Cove Tunnel. Sounds familiar?'"

@erkpod @Rentlar Really hoping that opens before the Wallabies matches start this year. Getting current public transport home means at the final transport change I have to wait for busses that only come every hour, and I ALWAYS get there < 5 minutes after the last bus left.

The metro will get me close enough to home it’s just a casual stroll. And is SO much more regular at all hours.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars So when are they going to have the courage to close the City West Link and most of Victoria Road through Rozelle? You shouldn't be using those "streets" unless you're local (or a bicycle).

We're halfway to solving these stroads. Let's do it.

Had this aluminum plate laser cut a few months back and hand-wired it with Box Navies and a RPi Pico, and oiled oak for the sides. I missed my numpad, though, so I used my own laser cutter and made an external one from Masonite and textured spraypaint.

RustyNova,

Left side numpad? That’s unusual

@RustyNova

I’m not sure where it will live long term, but “southpaw” numpads are definitely a thing. They allow for mousing while doing data entry, and they mitigate one of the reasons some people do without numpads by allowing the shoulders to stay more neutral when the mouse is close to the right edge of the keyboard.

To tide us over between the brewery earlier and the pub to come we've dipped our hands into the fridge to select something from the craft ales Mystery Box we recently bought. It was a Wheat Beer and, seriously, who likes this stuff? Wheat beer is revolting. It's the Chardonnay of the wine world. It's the Campari of whatever world it is that Campari lives in. Its only purpose appears to be to make other drinks seem nicer.

I think that's a fair statement. I wasn't a particular fan before getting hooked on a much more robust wheat from the same brewery that was on tap at my local at the time. The Vitus. Just couldn't get enough of it.

Fluent Emoji: Microsoft's open source emoji library

@opensource

Markaos,

I kinda doubt there’s going to be any outside contributions to this project, so any non-exclusive license would allow MS to rerelease this under a proprietary license - even the GPL. They own the copyright, so they can release it under as many licenses as they wish.

With software there’s way lower barrier to entry and way higher chance of having the patches accepted. With art… Good luck convincing MS that your version of the emoji is worth the hassle of losing the ability to just change the license at any moment.

rutrum,
@rutrum@lm.paradisus.day avatar

Open source to some extend, but their whole thing about these emojis is that they are 3d and animated. But the repo only contains png renders if the 3d models. So you arent able to modify or animate the 3d models directly.

Imo they released enough to call it “open source” and get good PR from it without actually giving the raw source files to the community (their competitors). I was not pleased with this when they announced it 2 years ago. Its still the same.

whou,

I’m glad that they chose the AGPL when open-sourcing their server. I don’t see that many companies, especially ones offering a “product”, open-sourcing their work with a copyleft license.

grue,

If they’re nice enough to use the AGPL, I have some faith that they’ll also improve it for self-hosting.

The federation between mastodon and lemmy is strange. If a M account wants to follow a L community, they need to follow an automated M account which represents the L community. But if any M post mentions that L community, the post will get boosted by the community's M account, so everybody who follows will get a notification. And I'm not sure if this can be moderated from the L side, because it seems like it never goes through L. Such as - do you see this @opensource ? Does a L mod see this?

@nar @nar And this is how it looks on the mastodon side, for anyone wondering: https://mstdn.io/@chebra/111950837765992663

I think the federation sometimes takes a couple of minutes, I saw this lemmy thread through two lemmy instances, and they showed different comments. Eventually it should synchronize though. And mastodon posts older than a week usually aren't shown through other than the poster's main instance.

Playing a lot of RDR2 for the first time. The minigame "Five Finger Filet" annoys the hell outta me. So wrote an AutoHotKey script for it. It goes about 12 fillets(?) per round.

` ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
; ; Enable warnings to assist with detecting common errors.
SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory.

keys := ["s", "d", "a", "s", "a"]

SetKeyDelay, 0, 50
^a::
While !(GetKeyState("x", "P"))
{
for key, val in keys
{
Send {w down}
Sleep 50
Send {w up}
Sleep 100
Send {%val% down}
Sleep 50
Send {%val% up}
Sleep 100
}
}`

Read Dead Redemption 2
Five Finger Fillet
AutoHotKey script
(change the keys array every round).

Edit: Just realized hashtags work!

H2SO4,

@derekabutton Definitely! I tested it out, but couldn't get it to work in the first try, so took the lazy route and just hardcoded the sequence in.

derekabutton,

A wise man once told me that technology isn’t about making simple things complicated. It’s about making complicated things simple.

The code for the prompt would probably be twice the size of the rest, and would take quite a bit more time than it would save. Sounds like you had the right idea in leaving it out. I can never keep myself to those obvious limits and it’s always such a waste automating for hours to save seconds lol

Question about

Currently I'm backing up my personal computer on a local server and a remote repository. The easiest solution is to have a cronjob for 2 processes. However, I'm wondering if it is possible to scan the files only once and send the backup updates to both repositories instead of doing two scans... suggestions?

BlackEco,
@BlackEco@lemmy.blackeco.com avatar

What I personally do is:

  1. Back up to the local server
  2. Sync the repository from the local server to Backblaze B2

This way restic only has to process the data once.

makingStuffForFun,

This is exactly what I do also. Been chugging away for some years now without a hitch.

Braupakt: Two giants at it together, Weihenstephan and St Bernardus.

The Weizen yeast is obvious, with clove and banana dominating the aroma. Also some biscuit, citrus and hay. It's golden and crystal clear, with a stable white head. Effervescent, rather sweet, with a good dose of hop bitters.

Very well balanced. A good mix of the styles, with both very recognizable. Nice experiment!
