Ajen,

“Tribal?” A lot of Democrats supported this, it seems like a rare example of bipartisan cooperation to me. Why do you think it’s an example of tribalism?

Ajen,

I mean, Lemmy is basically an internet addict support group.

SUVs made up 20% of global emissions growth and 55% of car sales globally in 2023 (slrpnk.net)

This is just insane. Not only are cars themself mostly unnecessary, if the right infrastructure is provided, but SUVs also use more resources to run and be produced then small cars, without any advantage over them. So an obvious waste, which could easily be cut to reduce emissions....

Ajen,

Good point. I wonder how big of a bar “meat production” would be. If you include shipping and all other ways it contributes to emissions I wouldn’t be surprised if it outweighs consumer vehicles.

Ajen,

Because there are still a lot of cars being made and sold. They’re a big part of every manufacturer’s product line. How many new dumb phones were released in the past 2 years?

Ajen,

YouTube is a decent source of info for some subjects, like vehicle maintenance and 3d printing. Of course it still depends on the channel/creator…

Ajen,

which in turn makes the American-led democratic world order a huge hypocrisy.

Not a hypocrisy, just a falsehood. America’s federal government doesn’t have as much influence on global politics as a lot of people seem to believe.

Ajen,

You need to own both Skyrim and Oblivion for the mod to work, that might keep them safe.

Helldivers 2’s Politics Appear To Be Flying Over The Heads Of Some (www.forbes.com)

There is currently a very funny, kind of sad dust-up over Helldivers 2, in which self-proclaimed “anti-woke” gamers have previously heralded it as a rare game where they believe “politics” does not play a factor. Their faith was been shaken by an Arrowhead community manager they believed they found to be (gasp)...

Ajen,

Sadly they were too optimistic and their leaders listened to smart people unlike ours.

Smart != benevolent

Ajen,

They’re mostly just used for tamper-proof screws for things like bathroom stalls so people can’t take them apart as a “prank” or whatever. The screw driver bits tend to break easily, which is usually worse than the screw stripping.

Ajen,

“Fruit cup" = a queer person

I thought that was a pretty common slur?

Ajen,

Por que no los dos?

And those aren’t the only fruity slurs, either.

Ajen,

You do realize a lot of Christians/Catholics don’t support Trump, right? Lots of Democratic leaders are Catholic, like Biden and Pelosi.

Ajen,

religion and fear as the basis for its atrocities.

And christians are bad. Always have been.

You are a hypocrite.

Ajen,

It’s just tribalism. Anyone who doesn’t fit in gets grouped together (ie. a lot of these comments imply most religious people support Trump). Lemmy isn’t immune to it.

Ajen,

OK… I was just explaining why some Christians don’t like Trump selling bibles. I’m not sure why your being so toxic.

Ajen,

Found the LLM

Ajen,

No, I think it’s weird you’re equating slavery with using software and machinery to automate things. Are you sure you’re not a bot?

Ajen,

I think they meant a “legal person,” in the same way a corporation is a person (in the US).

Ajen,

Again, we’re talking about using technology to make human lives better. Even if AI is legally recognized as a “person,” that shouldn’t change our morals.

Ajen,

Yes, but a “person” can be a corporation, and now apparently a machine learning algorithm. A “person” isn’t always a human. I care about humans, not whatever our current legal system calls a “person.”

Ajen,

Seems like you’re reading into it a little too much. Either way, laws don’t dictate my morals. Human rights don’t extend to machines.

Ajen,

Called it. You’re a bot.

There is no fate but what we make for ourselves.

Ajen,

No, just when I find it humorous.

And I’d take that bet ;)

Ajen,

How do you feel about corporations being “people?”

Ajen,

You find dehumanizing others humorous? You should work on being less terrible.

No, the dehumanizing part isn’t the humorous part. I’m sorry if I offended you, most people I know personally would find it funny and not take offense. It was meant to be light-hearted, but maybe it didn’t come off that way.

Prove you never have and I’d pay you, otherwise I will forward you a list of charities you can send your loss to.

Why is the entire burden of proof on me? Shouldn’t you have to prove I’ve never called a real person an “NPC?”

Ajen,

And the main point I was trying to make, which obviously got muddied by my misguided humor, is that we (in the US, at least) already classify corporations as “people,” which is something I strongly disagree with.

I refuse to respect corporations like I respect human beings, and I don’t think they deserve human rights or the influence they have over our government.

Ajen,

Check the terms? You’re adding new terms after the agreement was made. I call shenanigans!

Ajen,

I do think I was correct in my read of the OP screenshot as indicating a desire to own and profit of the labor of a “person”—a position which should be examined and the underpinnings of which roundly rejected

My mind went in a different direction when I read it. It made me think about the Citizens United ruling and how legal recognition (or lack of recognition) doesn’t guide my moral compass. And practically speaking, I don’t think AI would be legally recognized as a “person” unless it benefits the ruling class and widens the wealth gap.

I also disagree with your judgement. There are definitely red flags in the post, but I don’t think it’s fair to read between the lines and jump to conclusions based on one post. It could easily be a satire account.

Ajen, (edited )

You’re missing something. He’s being charged with breaking multiple laws, not just “interfering with a government proceeding.”

The criminal proceeding against him has been tied up in appeals after a Trump-appointed trial judge ruled that one of the criminal laws Fischer is charged with violating must be read very narrowly.

But only one of those charges is being contested. The Supreme Court gets to decide if he’ll be tried on that charge, but it sounds like he’ll be tied on the other charges regardless of what the Supreme Court decides. The headline is sensational, but what else would you expect from Vox?

Ajen,

I don’t blame you, the article really overplayed that one charge. I bet they had great “engagement,” though.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they’re on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can’t be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

Ajen,

Where did you hear that? Can you share a link? It’s not entirely true, but it does apply to most IoT products.

Ajen,

Right, that’s true of cloud-based services, but not “anything that connects to the internet.”

Ajen,

but at that point the courts might decide either way and litigation costs money.

It also sets a precedent which makes it easier for Nintendo and other companies to sue open source developers. It would have been bad for everyone in the emulation community if they went to court and lost.
