“Tribal?” A lot of Democrats supported this, it seems like a rare example of bipartisan cooperation to me. Why do you think it’s an example of tribalism?
This is just insane. Not only are cars themself mostly unnecessary, if the right infrastructure is provided, but SUVs also use more resources to run and be produced then small cars, without any advantage over them. So an obvious waste, which could easily be cut to reduce emissions....
Good point. I wonder how big of a bar “meat production” would be. If you include shipping and all other ways it contributes to emissions I wouldn’t be surprised if it outweighs consumer vehicles.
Because there are still a lot of cars being made and sold. They’re a big part of every manufacturer’s product line. How many new dumb phones were released in the past 2 years?
There is currently a very funny, kind of sad dust-up over Helldivers 2, in which self-proclaimed “anti-woke” gamers have previously heralded it as a rare game where they believe “politics” does not play a factor. Their faith was been shaken by an Arrowhead community manager they believed they found to be (gasp)...
They’re mostly just used for tamper-proof screws for things like bathroom stalls so people can’t take them apart as a “prank” or whatever. The screw driver bits tend to break easily, which is usually worse than the screw stripping.
It’s just tribalism. Anyone who doesn’t fit in gets grouped together (ie. a lot of these comments imply most religious people support Trump). Lemmy isn’t immune to it.
Again, we’re talking about using technology to make human lives better. Even if AI is legally recognized as a “person,” that shouldn’t change our morals.
Yes, but a “person” can be a corporation, and now apparently a machine learning algorithm. A “person” isn’t always a human. I care about humans, not whatever our current legal system calls a “person.”
You find dehumanizing others humorous? You should work on being less terrible.
No, the dehumanizing part isn’t the humorous part. I’m sorry if I offended you, most people I know personally would find it funny and not take offense. It was meant to be light-hearted, but maybe it didn’t come off that way.
Prove you never have and I’d pay you, otherwise I will forward you a list of charities you can send your loss to.
Why is the entire burden of proof on me? Shouldn’t you have to prove I’ve never called a real person an “NPC?”
And the main point I was trying to make, which obviously got muddied by my misguided humor, is that we (in the US, at least) already classify corporations as “people,” which is something I strongly disagree with.
I refuse to respect corporations like I respect human beings, and I don’t think they deserve human rights or the influence they have over our government.
I do think I was correct in my read of the OP screenshot as indicating a desire to own and profit of the labor of a “person”—a position which should be examined and the underpinnings of which roundly rejected
My mind went in a different direction when I read it. It made me think about the Citizens United ruling and how legal recognition (or lack of recognition) doesn’t guide my moral compass. And practically speaking, I don’t think AI would be legally recognized as a “person” unless it benefits the ruling class and widens the wealth gap.
I also disagree with your judgement. There are definitely red flags in the post, but I don’t think it’s fair to read between the lines and jump to conclusions based on one post. It could easily be a satire account.
You’re missing something. He’s being charged with breaking multiple laws, not just “interfering with a government proceeding.”
The criminal proceeding against him has been tied up in appeals after a Trump-appointed trial judge ruled that one of the criminal laws Fischer is charged with violating must be read very narrowly.
But only one of those charges is being contested. The Supreme Court gets to decide if he’ll be tried on that charge, but it sounds like he’ll be tied on the other charges regardless of what the Supreme Court decides. The headline is sensational, but what else would you expect from Vox?

but at that point the courts might decide either way and litigation costs money.
It also sets a precedent which makes it easier for Nintendo and other companies to sue open source developers. It would have been bad for everyone in the emulation community if they went to court and lost.
