Buffalox,

Yes it literally has come a long way, all the way from 1991 to 2024, I think the only other OS that has managed that is Windows.
I know that’s not quite what you meant, it was just a thought I came to think of reading the headline.

But apart from that, it’s also become quite good, but IMO it has been for more than a decade now.

Buffalox,

Yes it is absolutely cool. 😎
I tried Linux earlier, but didn’t find it really useful until 2005 when I switched to Linux as my main OS, but games were a huge problem, so I had to dual boot for a couple of years, before I dropped Windows completely.

Buffalox,

That’s kind of true, but MacOS and Mac OSX are 2 different things. What is based on BSD is the MAC OSX that came out in 2001 AFAIK.

And BSD was interrupted for 2 years because of copyright disputes with AT&T. If that hadn’t happened, BSD would be the longest continuous OS today, and probably way more significant than it is.

I don’t consider MAC OSX as part of BSD, just like Android isn’t part of Linux Desktop, but only uses the Linux kernel. OSX took parts of BSD and shielded it behind a proprietary wall, because the BSD license offer no protection from that. So they become separate projects the moment they enter the Apple domain.

Problem here is when people mix up the use of the word Linux as an OS with Linux the kernel. I am 100% sure OP meant Linux as a Desktop OS like GNU/Linux or something like Free desktop according to freedesktop.org. Using his experience with EndeavorOS as an example.

But you are right, it can be said Unix/BSD has an even longer running time, but it has been somewhat problematic and interrupted because of AT&T and SCO and Novell.

Buffalox,

Windows became popular with Windows 3.0 that came out 1990, And the Linux kernel came in 1991, but the first distro which is a better comparison came in 1993.

So Windows had a 3 year advantage.
But that wasn’t the more crucial thing, the real advantage was DOS compatibility, which everything legacy ran on. So with Windows people and companies could still run their old DOS programs, they could even run them better than in an old fashioned DOS system, because Windows was brilliant for multitasking DOS programs.

Buffalox,

Yes BSD just hasn’t had much luck, I have no idea why the GNU project didn’t use the BSD kernel? They say the Linux kernel was the final piece to make it a complete OS. But AFAIK BSD existed with a kernel way before that.

Buffalox,

Trump has absolutely no shame, he’s a narcissist liar piece of shit. It’s more like for a small bribe he would try to prevent it.

Buffalox,

Yes, because the corrupt parts of the media of USA allow it. The way half the American media are reporting, wouldn’t be legal in EU.

Buffalox, (edited )

It is, Trump is literally a malignant narcissist, sociopath and psychopath and a pathological liar. Meaning he lies to put himself in a better light, and to hurt people on purpose.

Trump is a natural in gaslighting, it’s not even an effort to him. It’s the way he thinks all the time.

It’s absolutely insane that about half of USA support him. It’s a country where a large part of the population is collectively mentally ill.

Buffalox,

That’s strange there has been talk about it for years. Russia tried to switch to Ruble, and Iran and Venezuela tried to switch away from $ USD too.

It has had near zero effect AFAIK, because nobody wants to trade in unstable currencies. Maybe Russia has been moderately successful, but at the cost of having to sell well below market prices.

Buffalox,

China is on an insane powertrip about Taiwan, and quite frankly they can go fuck themselves IMO.
Taiwan is an independent nation, we don’t have to respect China in any way in that regard. If they agree to become one nation again that’s their decision, but Chinese threats of military invasion and takeover are immoral, and we should NOT accept the “One China” policy in any way that threatens Taiwans right to self determination.

Buffalox, (edited )

That’s kind of the opposite, Taiwan is a de facto independent nation, Texas is not. Texas is a state in a federation it joined voluntarily, that prohibits secession. Still if they can politically negotiate independence, and the rest of USA accept that, USA shouldn’t start a war later to take it back.

As you saw with EU, UK could become independent, because those are the terms when you join EU.

The split of Taiwan from China is a result of civil war, and Taiwan has been independent since 1945, that’s 79 years of independence. China reluctantly accepted this because they lacked power to invade. For many years Taiwan rulers claimed to be the legitimate rulers of China, which was ridiculous, now China claims to be the legitimate rulers of Taiwan which is equally ridiculous. To restart an almost century old war against a peaceful neighbor because of some sense of entitlement is insane.

The country was split in a civil war, there is no law of nature that requires the two to be one.
It’s a sick way of thinking, that you can claim sovereignty by power over an independent nation. Just because historically the borders were different.

By that logic, Denmark could claim to be rightful rulers of Ireland, UK, Norway, half of Sweden, Northern Germany, Estonia and Iceland.
It’s absolute insanity for a nation to feel entitled in that way. Even if we (Denmark) could, it wouldn’t be better for anybody… Except maybe UK.

Yes once Taiwan was part of China, but it isn’t anymore. If Texas want independence, they’ll have to work on it politically.

Buffalox,

have thrown herself into consideration for secretary of state or defense secretary

What a moron! Whatever makes her think she would even be considered?

Within eight years, Gabbard has moved from being an ally for Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign to a Democratic presidential candidate to a right-wing influencer who has filled in as a host on Tucker Carlson’s former Fox News show,

That kind of change can sometimes be caused by a tumor or other forms of brain damage. I’m not saying that to scorn her, but it’s a very dramatic change, that could be down to some sort of brain trauma.

But of course she may also be just an opportunist, in which case she is more likely a sociopath.
For sure she is not a normal functioning person.

Buffalox, (edited )

It’s funny, I thought Trump was all for sacrificing everything, NATO the environment, workers rights, social programs, actually the entire human kind by denying climate change against all evidence, just so he can annoy the Democrats. Which he calls winning.

I bet he would be all for ACTUAL child sacrifice if it could turn a profit or help get him elected…
Oh what am I thinking? Of course he is, he already support weapons in kindergartens, and to do absolutely nothing against school shootings. Because Insane Republican Christian Americans want it that way. If you are a victim in a schools shooting, it was probably gods will. If a fetus is removed, god gets pissed and christian heads explode.

Buffalox,

He is getting senile, he forgot the new party line is that Russia is protecting Christianity.
If it’s actually part of a non senile strategy, he may be trying to convince voters there are still grown ups among Republicans that will talk sense to Trump, and that Republicans aren’t the party of traitors.

Buffalox,

Do you mean the war where a country of 120 million people can’t win over a country the third it’s size. in a world of 7 Billion people?
A war constituting only less than 2% of the global population?
Is that the world war you mean?

Buffalox,

Maybe if Xi is removed we can get back to improving relationships again. I hope China is pragmatic enough to realize a war against Taiwan will 100% cost them more than they gain.
IDK why they are behaving like such assholes about it currently, except Xi is an idiot about it, and want China recognized as a global power kind of like Russia wants.
The difference being China is an actual global power, while Russia is nothing without their nukes.

But I don’t see it as a trend following the Ukraine war, the situation with China has been uneasy for a while, and even if Russia conned Hamas into their attack on Israel, it is of little military significance, except of course for the Palestinians that suffer greatly from this.

So I get what you mean, but I disagree it’s a trend.

Buffalox,

Buffalox,

Thanks, it good to see that the democracy is good enough for people to actually have a say.

Salman Rushdie’s alleged assailant seeks plea deal with US (www.semafor.com)

Hadi Matar, the man accused of nearly fatally stabbing British-American writer Salman Rushdie, is negotiating a plea agreement with both US state and federal prosecutors that could shed light on whether a foreign government or terrorist organization was involved in the attack, officials involved in the case told Semafor....

Buffalox, (edited )

You know what’s blasphemous against Islam? Islam the Quran and fanatic muslims.

Buffalox,

The absolute zero remorse, but rather the opposite in attacking everybody else should be an aggravating circumstance.
Michael Cohen showed remorse, and cooperated, and he still got jail time.
I’d say Trump deserves to serve time more than Cohen did.

1 Trump did not cooperate
2 Trump gave the orders
3 Trump shows no remorse

Is it really true that: “when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.”

Buffalox,

It’s kind of weird, we have 12 parties in “Folketinget” (Danish Parlament), and it only requires 2% of votes to get in. But our only religious party “Christian Democrats” has not managed to get in for decades.

Religion has very little power in politics here, despite (or maybe because?) the biggest church by far, is the government controlled “Peoples church”, that even has it’s own minister in the government!

The widespread religious fanaticism in USA seems insane here.

Buffalox,

Yes that’s weird too, because we have an official state church which is protestant, and the King and Queen are required to be members by law. We also have an official minister for religion, (it used to be for the state church), so we aren’t 100% secular, but Denmark is now among the least religious countries in the world. But despite that 71% remain members of folkekirken “people’s church”, but not for religious reasons, more for weddings and funerals, baptism also remains tradition, maybe because the church is responsible for registering names any way.

So it’s a weird mix of keeping religious traditions but without religious beliefs. I’ll go so far as stating that most consider it almost secular ceremonies, and outside special holidays, most churches are almost empty. The whole system is only held up by taxpayer money.

For instance we had the political debate about abortion rights in the 70’s, and there is no way that can be reversed now, there’s such a huge majority for abortion rights that even the Christian Democrats stopped opposing it a few years ago.

There is not a single anti abortion party in Denmark anymore. It’s absolutely insane for us to see how that basic right has been stripped away in some states in USA. As a matter of fact the limit for abortion was recently increased from 12 to 18 weeks.

Buffalox,

I simply don’t get how this even became a question? The conditions should be that if they are within international law it’s allright. And no doubt you are allowed by international law to shoot back when attacked.
This stance from USA is infuriatingly stupid.

Buffalox, (edited )

This is solely about not wanting the war to go nuclear.

Really? Don’t you think I know that? That’s still bullshit, and letting Russia dictate the terms. European countries are widely acknowledging Ukraines right to defend themselves, including striking into Russia. And Russia is of course spewing bullshit about it as usual, calling it escalation to a global war and what not. The truth is the only thing Russia respects is a show of force, that’s how it was with the Soviet Union too, and that hasn’t changed.

Europe is delivering F16 soon that are ALREADY allowed to attack Russia, there is zero reasonable argument to not allow Ukraine to defend themselves properly. It will only embolden Russia, as it already has, by Russia attacking in the northern region now, because Ukraine isn’t allowed to fight back.
Russia is constantly trying to sow fear, and to exploit it. It’s ironic how the worlds greatest military power is acting from fear and not strength!

Finally if there were actually a nuclear strike from Russia, it would most likely be against Ukraine, but despite that Ukraine does not share the doubt USA does.

I’m guessing USA will change policy on this soon, because they are pressured hard by allies.

But in the mean time Ukraine is fighting with one hand behind their back, which is costly to Ukraine currently.

Buffalox,

It’s really sick, she thought suffering was some sort of gate to heaven. So she made people suffer when they were dying.

Buffalox,

125° F that’s above boiling temperature in Flaffenfeit!!! But boiling what is the question? Probably somebody’s temper.

Buffalox,

So 125° F is like saying it’s WAY TOO HOT! Thank you, I think I’m beginning to understand Flaffenfeit better now.

It’s a bit like measuring in yards, but they never say whether it’s front yards or back yards, which is quite significant IMO. But even a hundred yards isn’t very far, so I guess they must have some pretty funny small yards over there.

Buffalox,

God is a maniac and he wants you to kill all infidels, it’s in the Bible.
In what part of the Bible have you ever seen god commanding his followers to help another tribe that believes another god?
Also bring me their foreskin, because reasons.

Buffalox,

It so reminds me of Rod Stewart “Sailing”, Which was used for a TV show in the late 70’s. I hated that song more than 40 years ago and I still do, and I hate the theme song to Enterprise sounding like something from the 70’s. It seemed to me everything about Enterprise was to make humanity seem backwards and primitive but in a future SciFi setting. Like when one of the first episodes, they are totally surprised that bacteria can contaminate a planet. Something that has been well known and considered already for several decades.

Buffalox,

OK that would explain it, but AFAIK if you rerecord it, you still need to pay royalties.

Buffalox, (edited )

Germany has lots of grid connections to other countries, and are pretty surely selling off what they can get rid of, but France has nuclear, Sweden and Norway have hydro, Denmark has wind and solar. All these markets are also currently negative. We’ve had negative prices for almost 14 days now, but somehow they went into plus today here in Denmark, although we (personally) had lots of sun and could sell 61,9 kWh from our solar panels.

I just checked, and the prices are near identical between: Germany, Belgium, Poland, Austria, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

data.nordpoolgroup.com/auction/day-ahead/prices?d…

Oh no, it’s too bad Germany isn’t surrounded by other countries it could sell that excess power to!

Your sarcasm is misplaced.

Buffalox,

No it’s not, it’s a clear loss situation for producers. The companies that sell to end users may make a bit extra, but even when they have fixed price agreements, this is calculated in to some degree.
Here (Denmark) we have variable price agreements by the hour, and most companies stopped offering fixed prices at all, after the price hikes when Russia invaded Ukraine. That was a situation where many electricity traders (middlemen) made huge profits, and the bill was handed down to consumers. Some companies expected prices to increase more than they did, so the fixed price agreements were awfully expensive, Often more than double what they should have been. They were also generally payed in advance, which caused huge bills even if you cut consumption hard.
The electricity market is an awful market, because it’s treated as if it’s a free and open market, but in reality it isn’t, because it’s tied to a lot of infra structure, and it’s also tied to a lot of long term agreements, because that’s the only way to plan infra structure properly.

Buffalox, (edited )

Of course it was sarcastic, which is exactly why it doesn’t make any sense. The sarcasm is what’s idiotic about the comment I replied to. Because it indicates that Germany isn’t using obvious options. Of course they are using those options, as are all other European countries.

Edit:

I’ve changed the last part of my comment above to show that I responded to the original comment understanding it as sarcasm.

Tips on distro for gaming Swedish

Hi! I’m getting a new laptop any day now and I plan on going back to Linux after maybe a decade on Windows. What works best for gaming nowadays? Is manjaro good for that? I prefer a distro with a nice name but of course that’s not the central thing. I’ll also do some book keeping, writing et cetera but I don’t think...

Buffalox,

I’ve used Manjaro for many years now, and it works very well for Steam IMO. When I chose Manjaro I checked ProtonDB to see if there was a trend where some distros had higher success rate for Proton games on Steam, and it seemed to me there was, and Manjaro was one of the best.

But maybe if I had checked other games I’d have other results IDK. But generally if a game has good score on ProtonDB it will work for me with my Radeon RX 6600 XT.

I would imagine most distros work well with Steam today, it is after all mostly similar libraries they all use.

Buffalox,

It’s not like anything he says is a secret:
www.linuxfoundation.org 900 open source projects 3M+ developers trained
It’s right there on the front page.

Linux foundation never supported desktop development, and I suspect they have their reasons. Maybe that a GUI is a very subjective thing, there are dozens of desktops, supporting one would probably cause major wrath from everybody else, so if Linux Foundation were to support the desktop, they’d have to support all. But Gnome has often shown to be hostile to outside influence, so maybe they don’t really care to mess with that. KDE is based on QT, and maybe the QT dual license isn’t within the scope of Linux Foundation to support? So with the biggest desktops being somewhat problematic, maybe it’s better to just leave it alone.

The real question IMO is why Linux desktop doesn’t have better support from other foundations? Why aren’t any of them able to attract more financial support?

Personally I liked Gnome 2, and I think Gnome did a lot of harm to Linux when they deprecated it before Gnome Shell was ready, and I think Gnome alienated many users with the design decisions of Gnome shell.

Then the problem is that almost every GUI Desktop on Linux is based on some flavor of GTK which is under Gnome, or based on QT with the dual license.

Personally I don’t mind the dual license of QT, but many Linux developers are very idealistic, and don’t like it.

Buffalox,

Bill Maher is funny, he makes fun of Christians as superstitious, but is himself superstitious, and is an outspoken antivaxer contrary to the evidence.

But he is only funny if you find idiots funny.

I actually watched his show years back, but I stopped when he show after show started saying “Iknow we shouldn’t talk about Hillary’s emails. But have you seen the latest?” He is such a moron.

I was detained at a US airport and asked about Israel and Gaza for 2 hours. Why? | Ilan Pappé (www.theguardian.com)

I was held for two hours. The first round of questions was about my views on Hamas. Then the agents wished to know whether I thought Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip amount to genocide and what I think of the slogan “Palestine should be free from the river to the sea”. I said yes, I do think Israel is committing...

Buffalox,

Wow, there is really some shit going on in USA, we would usually only expect from a totalitarian regime, and absolutely not from a democracy.

Buffalox,

AFAIK the basis for these checks were established under Bush. So mostly designed by Republicans and not democrats.

Buffalox,

I don’t get it? Can anybody buy a gun at a gun show? Do you show ID, to have it registered?

Buffalox,

OK so if I understand you correctly, at a gun show, you can buy a gun as if it was a piece of candy! No check, no registration no nothing. I’m sorry if it’s a stupid question, but this seems pretty crazy to me.

Buffalox,

What!!! Are you saying you don’t have your constitutional rights if you are under 13? /s

Buffalox, (edited )

www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/…/about-nics

That sounds like a background check, so now I’m as confused as I was to begin with.

Edit: Maybe states are different, but apparently it’s possible to buy without any check or showing ID at least in some states.

Buffalox,

Have you tried to open it in a private window?

Buffalox,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. 👍

The Biden Campaign Has a Trump-Fatigue Problem (nymag.com)

Joe Biden’s campaign is facing a strategic dilemma. Since the president’s job-approval ratings have been consistently low, his path to reelection depends on making 2024 a comparative choice between himself and Donald Trump, his scary, extremist predecessor. That task is becoming more urgent as evidence emerges that a sizable...

Buffalox,

If police violence is a problem, that too is 100% a reason to NOT vote for Trump. Trump wants to give more power to police, and protect them even better when they kill innocent people. Trump wants police to shoot colored people and demonstrants indiscriminately. His policies and actions clearly show that.
You are supporting a fascist with no regard for democracy, either on purpose or unwittingly.

Buffalox,

If you are not helping Biden, you are helping Trump win. That’s the problem with the 2 party system in USA.
Maybe one day USA will have a better democracy, and we can have more nuanced debates on US politics.

Buffalox,

Free market economy is inherently imperfect, and needs to be both regulated and adjusted by government.
