As you seem to know a lot about Clonezilla, I’m allowing myself to ask you something.
Would Clonezilla work for doing a backup and reinstalling it on a completely different device?
I’ve already used it to backup and restore on the same device. I also tried to install my Surface Go device backup on an old Acer Computer but it failed to boot afterwards. I’m not sure if it’s because of the surface specific kernel or because it doesn’t work from one computer to another.
I forgot to say that I’m using Linux (Fedora 40). If you think it wouldn’t work, do you know another program which would?
My data is stored on the cloud, but I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of setting everything up again if I move to another computer (extensions, mail, calendar, installed programs and settings).
Okay then I guess I’ll just backup my home folder on kDrive (my cloud service) and then just remember which programs are installed since the automatic listing of programs seems a bit too complicated for me. Thanks for the help!
I tired Linux a few times in the past, but didn’t really start using seriously until 2019. I love poking around old OSs and distros, and I want to spin a few up in some VMs my next free evening....
So I took the plunge and installed Fedora Silverblue because of all that immutable buzz. And it’s the most frustrating change I have made in almost 20 years of my distrohopping....
If installing the surface kernel (kind of necessary for my Surface Go 1) and installing a few appimages didn’t look so difficult, I guess I would already be on Silverblue.
I’m kind of the opposite of OP and just having nightmares about breaking my system 😅
That’s why I’m doing clonezilla backup but I think the custom kernel would be a problem if I reinstall on another non-Surface computer. Maybe I should just go back to the normal kernel before doing a backup…
I just installed EndeavorOS on an HP Spectre360 that’s roughly 2 years old. I am honestly surprised at how easy it went. If you google it, you’ll get a lot of “lol good luck installing linux on that” type posts - so I was ready for a battle....
I guess a lot of it depends on the hardware you’re using.
I now use a Surface Go 1 and it suits me really well.
But getting it to boot on a usb drive was difficult and I would have given up if it was just to try Linux.
Fortunately, I had already used Linux on many other devices and I knew that the reward was worth the struggle and that the difficulties were not related to Linux.
Surprisingly it was really easy to install fedora on my wife’s MacBook Pro from 2012.
The only thing I had to do for everything to work perfectly was to install the RPM fusion repository and accept that the @ is gonna be mapped to the wrong key.
It’s the easiest device I’ve had for installing Linux in quite a while…
Well if none of the solutions everyone has proposed, I guess I’ll just wipe everything and install Fedora Silverblue to avoid future problems like this one…
Well I’d love to be able to just do this, especially because every install is a big hassle on my Surface Go 1. Even booting from USB is, I don’t know why exactly… But what should I do once I manage to boot on the live USB?
That’s what I got in the end after I was able to use the command you gave me. I don’t know if it helped or not. I just hope the problem I had is gone for good.
Windows -> Ubuntu ->dual boot with Ubuntu-> Windows-> Ubuntu-> Fedora workstation
All of this over 20 years.
And now I really don’t plan on going back to Windows and I’m happy with Gnome and Fedora even if I’d want to try other distributions outside of a virtual machine sometimes.
And the f course there were some accidents with lost data over the years, but I always had a pretty recent backup on a drive before syncing with cloud backup became a thing.
I’m honestly asking why people are so furious about the psn account. Is it because you don’t want to give your data to Sony?
I’d clearly understand with something like facebook or google, but I don’t think giving my data to Sony is the end of the world.
I’m not a pc gamer and I wouldn’t want to have every company pushing for their own account, but I don’t see why Sony is getting so criticized when (I think) Ubisoft or Electronic Arts have been doing this for years on PC.
Well I don’t see why you couldn’t emulate it on a ps5. People are doing it on pc so I guess it’s more that Sony doesn’t care and don’t want to invest in it.
It’s one side where Microsoft is better than Sony, retrocompatinility.
I’m still playing a lot of ps4 and ps3 games, so I hope my ps3 is gonna stay fit for purpose in the long term 🤞
Well I’m not against games becoming more impressive visually per se, but against the fact that because of this games are becoming way more expensive to produce and companies are now risk averse.
But yeah I might have said « this is it » in front of quite a few games 😅
Maybe if you see it that way. But just thinking about how much you need to upgrade your PC or tinker with it for everything to work is too much for me.
I already don’t like the fact that on ps5 you have to choose between performance and fidelity modes, so imagine if I had to choose settings on a pc.
Also on consoles, you just know a game is gonna work perfectly, which is not always the case on pc.
But PC is better for some players and console are better for some others.
I sometimes consider jumping to PC gaming, but I see too many inconveniences for now.
Sudo dnf remove plasma-welcome removed the package but it’s still appearing as intalled in the package center. I’m gonna try rebooting and see if it solves the issue…
I guess, if I really wanna try KDE outside of a virtual machine, I’m gonna do a Clonezilla backup of my Gnome Fedora installation and wipe everything before starting on a fresh KDE installation.
