As you seem to know a lot about Clonezilla, I’m allowing myself to ask you something.

Would Clonezilla work for doing a backup and reinstalling it on a completely different device?

I’ve already used it to backup and restore on the same device. I also tried to install my Surface Go device backup on an old Acer Computer but it failed to boot afterwards. I’m not sure if it’s because of the surface specific kernel or because it doesn’t work from one computer to another.

Would you know that?

Dariusmiles2123,

Okay thanks for the answer 🙏

Dariusmiles2123, (edited )

I forgot to say that I’m using Linux (Fedora 40). If you think it wouldn’t work, do you know another program which would?

My data is stored on the cloud, but I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of setting everything up again if I move to another computer (extensions, mail, calendar, installed programs and settings).

Dariusmiles2123,

Okay then I guess I’ll just backup my home folder on kDrive (my cloud service) and then just remember which programs are installed since the automatic listing of programs seems a bit too complicated for me. Thanks for the help!

Dariusmiles2123,

Just for curiosity, where do you get these old distributions?

I might try the Ubuntu version which got me into Linux one of these days😇

Dariusmiles2123,

Thanks I’ll check it out👍

Dariusmiles2123,

I’ve only heard good things about them so I’m interested to know too.

Dariusmiles2123,

If installing the surface kernel (kind of necessary for my Surface Go 1) and installing a few appimages didn’t look so difficult, I guess I would already be on Silverblue.

I’m kind of the opposite of OP and just having nightmares about breaking my system 😅

That’s why I’m doing clonezilla backup but I think the custom kernel would be a problem if I reinstall on another non-Surface computer. Maybe I should just go back to the normal kernel before doing a backup…

Dariusmiles2123,

Seems a bit too complicated for me, even if it probably ain’t.

But I’d probably use it if one day I break my Fedora workstation install.

Dariusmiles2123,

It looks like a great service, but since I’m already paying for cloud storage (kDrive from Infomaniak) I wouldn’t want to have another subscription.

Although I wouldn’t mind paying once for an equivalent to Google photos which would be storing and going through my pictures on my cloud storage.

Does anyone knows if such a program exists?

Dariusmiles2123,

I guess a lot of it depends on the hardware you’re using.

I now use a Surface Go 1 and it suits me really well.

But getting it to boot on a usb drive was difficult and I would have given up if it was just to try Linux.

Fortunately, I had already used Linux on many other devices and I knew that the reward was worth the struggle and that the difficulties were not related to Linux.

Dariusmiles2123,

Surprisingly it was really easy to install fedora on my wife’s MacBook Pro from 2012.

The only thing I had to do for everything to work perfectly was to install the RPM fusion repository and accept that the @ is gonna be mapped to the wrong key.

It’s the easiest device I’ve had for installing Linux in quite a while…

Dariusmiles2123,

I’ve found some tutorials online, but I’m always cautious with these things because the more I tinker, the more I break my systems 😅

Dariusmiles2123,

Here are the results

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/44ba947f-e54b-4989-8d7d-c05b39b5432a.png

I don’t think free space is really the problem.

Dariusmiles2123,

sudo dnf clean

That’s what I get when I execute the command

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/b7e4a4fb-3b21-4f21-bf29-8b3aa80ad763.png

Dariusmiles2123,

sudo btrfs balance start -dusage=30 /

That’s what I’m getting when I’m trying to run the command

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/d61b09d7-171d-41d0-b6c2-6e7e5a653ec7.png

Dariusmiles2123,

Well if none of the solutions everyone has proposed, I guess I’ll just wipe everything and install Fedora Silverblue to avoid future problems like this one…

Dariusmiles2123,

I don’t think I have any snapshots, or at least I’ve never created them voluntarly

Dariusmiles2123,
Dariusmiles2123,

Well I’d love to be able to just do this, especially because every install is a big hassle on my Surface Go 1. Even booting from USB is, I don’t know why exactly… But what should I do once I manage to boot on the live USB?

Dariusmiles2123,

sudo btrfs subvolume list /

Here is the result. I doesn’t look like I have any

Dariusmiles2123,

Well, now everything seems to work!

So thanks a lot, even if I still don’t really understand what the problem was.

Reinstalling everything would have been a nightmare so I’m really happy everything works.

Dariusmiles2123,

sudo btrfs balance start -dusage=30 /

That’s what I got in the end after I was able to use the command you gave me. I don’t know if it helped or not. I just hope the problem I had is gone for good.

Dariusmiles2123,

I’ll have a look into this at one point.

But then I might be dumb but I don’t understand why everywhere I was checking there seemed to be free space (CLI and GUI).

Such things are a bit frightening when you think that using Linux is way easier than Windows and then you run into these issues.

Dariusmiles2123,

Thanks a lot for the help and advices!

It’s always nice to see how helpful everyone is on Lemmy👍

Dariusmiles2123,

That game was really a masterpiece! I enjoyed every part of it!

I’m really looking forward to the next Quantic Dream game, as they never disappoint even if Beyond Two Souls was inferior to their other games.

Dariusmiles2123,

Windows -> Ubuntu ->dual boot with Ubuntu-> Windows-> Ubuntu-> Fedora workstation

All of this over 20 years.

And now I really don’t plan on going back to Windows and I’m happy with Gnome and Fedora even if I’d want to try other distributions outside of a virtual machine sometimes.

And the f course there were some accidents with lost data over the years, but I always had a pretty recent backup on a drive before syncing with cloud backup became a thing.

Dariusmiles2123,

I’m honestly asking why people are so furious about the psn account. Is it because you don’t want to give your data to Sony?

I’d clearly understand with something like facebook or google, but I don’t think giving my data to Sony is the end of the world.

I’m not a pc gamer and I wouldn’t want to have every company pushing for their own account, but I don’t see why Sony is getting so criticized when (I think) Ubisoft or Electronic Arts have been doing this for years on PC.

Dariusmiles2123,

I guess every PlayStation game on pc is kind of belonging to the PlayStation universe and that’s why it’s an excuse to demand a psn account.

I’m addicted to trophies so I don’t mind the psn account.

I guess people who don’t want to get a psn account should just not play these games and not pirate them as some people are suggesting.

Dariusmiles2123,

Yeah PSN not being available everywhere is weird and not good for their sales then.

Dariusmiles2123,

I can only agree with this 👍

On PlayStation it ain’t a nuisance because the psn account is valid for every game, but on pc I agree with you.

Dariusmiles2123,

Yeah and don’t forget that even with the inflated price, a ps5 is cheap compared to a pc as powerful.

Dariusmiles2123,

Well I don’t see why you couldn’t emulate it on a ps5. People are doing it on pc so I guess it’s more that Sony doesn’t care and don’t want to invest in it.

It’s one side where Microsoft is better than Sony, retrocompatinility.

I’m still playing a lot of ps4 and ps3 games, so I hope my ps3 is gonna stay fit for purpose in the long term 🤞

Dariusmiles2123,

I really don’t regret buying my ps5, but I could totally still be on ps4 as I’m mostly playing games from the previous generation or available on it.

But at one point, there’ll be quite a few games which wouldn’t be able to run on ps4. The question is when.

I also feel like we don’t need to have more beautiful games than Last of Us 2, so I hope one day we’ll stop focusing so much on better looking games.

Dariusmiles2123,

On PlayStation you can still buy second hand games because of the disc drive. I don’t know if PC still have a blu-ray drive anymore.

You can still get a lot of new games on ps4 which is a cheap console.

I guess that for some people having a gaming pc is cheaper, but for me having a ps5 and a weak pc is cheaper.

It depends on the user…

Dariusmiles2123,

Well I’m not against games becoming more impressive visually per se, but against the fact that because of this games are becoming way more expensive to produce and companies are now risk averse.

But yeah I might have said « this is it » in front of quite a few games 😅

Dariusmiles2123,

Maybe if you see it that way. But just thinking about how much you need to upgrade your PC or tinker with it for everything to work is too much for me.

I already don’t like the fact that on ps5 you have to choose between performance and fidelity modes, so imagine if I had to choose settings on a pc.

Also on consoles, you just know a game is gonna work perfectly, which is not always the case on pc.

But PC is better for some players and console are better for some others.

I sometimes consider jumping to PC gaming, but I see too many inconveniences for now.

Dariusmiles2123,

Yeah probably. Cyberpunk was another example even if it came way earlier in the lifecycle.

Dariusmiles2123,

Yeah it’s true that testing on one machine isn’t really scientific. He should have tested the same distros on his other machines too.

Still I enjoyed the video and I really love his work 👍

Dariusmiles2123,

Okay thanks I’m gonna try that package name as soon as I can get in front on of this computer. Let’s hope it works.

I’ll keep you posted.

Dariusmiles2123,

Sudo dnf remove plasma-welcome removed the package but it’s still appearing as intalled in the package center. I’m gonna try rebooting and see if it solves the issue…

Edit: rebooting solved the issue so thanks a lot!

Dariusmiles2123,

I had heard that having two DE installed could cause problems, but when I checked docs.fedoraproject.org/…/switching-desktop-enviro… I didn’t see any warning so I tried.

I guess, if I really wanna try KDE outside of a virtual machine, I’m gonna do a Clonezilla backup of my Gnome Fedora installation and wipe everything before starting on a fresh KDE installation.

Dariusmiles2123,

I ain’t gonna try anything anymore, as I feel like I dodged a bullet and could have broken my precious installation.

That is unless I grow tired of Gnome one day.

Dariusmiles2123,

When you do such a thing and install a Linux mobile distro on it, does the End Of Life aspect of the phone still is a problem?

Dariusmiles2123,

Okay thanks as I wouldn’t want to put cash in a device (even a cheap one) I’d only be able to use for a few years.
