DieguiTux8623,

The far right has been ruling my country for 2 years now. Their campaigns have been specifically targeting Muslim migrants (even foreign workers, because they can marry locals, become citizens and generate offspring and other bullsh1t)… but looking at the facts and not the propaganda, this government has quietly more than doubled the number or yearly visas released for work reasons, just to say “look we cut irregular migration to a minimum”.

DieguiTux8623,

As a European I can reassure you: younger generations aren’t considered by politics (and in turn young people don’t consider politics at all and don’t even go to vote, abstentionsism is skyrocketing). The headline is a little exaggerated.

DieguiTux8623,

far-right, far-left and populist movements

Isn’t this how it is supposed to work? Why should anyone’s voice be silenced if all opinions are worth the same?

DieguiTux8623,

Yes I agree with you, of course, in theory it should work like this. But all around me I see things going so terribly wrong, so I assume practice must be somewhat different from the theory.

E.g. in my country far-right politicians have been democratically elected and they are dismantling the nation and changing the constitution, all legally.

Edit: Nobody is giving a f-ck neither internally nor externally (e.g. OTAN or EU) so I assume they are fine with it too.

DieguiTux8623,

The EU elections will play a decisive role in shaping this trend, those politicians who have exposed ideas about it, creating e.g. a common defense system, seem to have completely lost any contact with the reality of what citizens need and wish for their future.

DieguiTux8623,

Oh mon dieu, l’empire colonial Français!

DieguiTux8623,

If anything like this had happened in my country, it would have backfired very badly in the following elections.

DieguiTux8623,

I agree in that the failure to address socio-economic issues by who has been in charge until now fuels the resentment/frustration/urge for “quick and dirty” solutions people are looking for in alt-right parties. Until they realize having been deceived because things change for the worse and, which is more important, the establishment is not going to change.

DieguiTux8623,

Same, its existence gives me a little of hope even in the toughest moments. I don’t care if people aren’t always nice/polite, you have to deal with it IRL or on any online platform.

Lemmy has always been a sort of “cure” for me, listening to different people’s opinions and learning something new or a new perspective on things every day.

DieguiTux8623,

It is a country without future, and there is no hope for the situation to improve any time soon. Extremely low wages, no affordable housing, healthcare unavailable and poor access to education/services in general but high taxation. It would be crazy to expect anyone to plan to have a family!

DieguiTux8623,

Remove the “will” and “then” because they are already doing it! 😅

EU restates readiness to launch trade war with China over cheap imports (www.theguardian.com)

The European Commission chief said she was “convinced that if the competition is fair” from China, then Europe “will have thriving durable economies”. But she said the “imbalances” caused by state support for Chinese industry leading to cut-cost products threatened jobs in Europe, and that was “a matter of great...

DieguiTux8623,

Why not everything else too (electronic hardware, toys, clothes, etc…)?

DieguiTux8623,

It’s not a “fine” but a XIX century protectionistic measure which is unlikely to help anyone (except making people poorer because higher prices mean higher expenditure for consumers). And from here to the next inflation spiral there is just a small step…

DieguiTux8623,

I don’t think there is a solution for European economy. Better be prepared for the worst rather than living with the illusion that these tricks may work.

DieguiTux8623,

And if imported goods have cheap prices due to ignoring labor rights, worker safety and environmental protection it is acceptable… This is hypocrite and really does not deserve further comments.

DieguiTux8623,

Italian here: our “centre right” is actively on restricting abortion, dismantling public healthcare and education, deportation of immigrants, isolation of disabled students, eliminating LGBT rights and militarizing public spaces (with already students/protesters beaten by the police in several occasions) and of course jailing journalists and controlling the public media.

The only thing that sets them apart from their US equivalent is child labor, but they already have prevented the approval of minimum wages and other social safety net measures.

DieguiTux8623,

Other posters from the same party with the slogan “Let us change Europe before Europe changes us”:

There is another one with a person eating a cricket 🦗 against new food regulations but can’t find it rn.

DieguiTux8623,

Considering the ageing population and the abstention rate among younger generations, the far right is going to rule for a couple of decades.

DieguiTux8623,

If I were a foreigner, I would boycott everything that comes from this cursed land.

DieguiTux8623,

And not only will prices skyrocket, but also (at least in countries that allow it) agriculture businesses will take public money as restoration for the loss.

DieguiTux8623,

You’re right, my bad! The silver lining is that at least it may induce people to reduce consumption of unhealthy products and prefer quality over quantity.

DieguiTux8623,

They can still support the US, as all of them have done for the last 79 years and are doing still now.

DieguiTux8623,

I upvoted your comment, because I like the underlying idea that Europe has been “protected” so far because they could not sustain themselves, which is absolutely true. But the previous order collapsing isn’t necessarily bad.

DieguiTux8623,

Developing software and managing a community are totally different skills and mastering both is not to be taken for granted.

Plus, since you are very passionate about the open source projects you maintain or contribute to, it is difficult to “detach” yourself from people’s issues and not feel every criticism as a personal attack (and yes, when your software does not have the features/behavior they expect, some people can express their disappointment in quite a sharp way).

I prefer not to make anyone pay anything but “you get what it is, be warned that you may experience some bugs or lack of support for certain devices” (because I can’t buy every piece of hardware and test). Few people have accepted this model but, those who did, have always been supportive and respectful, making me rediscover a little hope that kindness isn’t dead at all.

DieguiTux8623,

I can not “unsee” it any more, thanks.

DieguiTux8623,

Here in Italy they have been smarter… even if some parties received funds linked to “United Russia”, they declared it was in the “pre-war” era, so unrelated to any criminal purpose.

DieguiTux8623,

Me neither, but it’s a news of what happened yesterday when a minister had to face a motion of no-confidence (obviously they were confirmed) and used this justification.

Lesson learned: don’t consider Italy a democratic country. It belongs more to middle east than to the EU. 🤣

DieguiTux8623,

What is the bad news?

DieguiTux8623,

Someone wants people to believe we need to grow… The environmental impact says otherwise.

DieguiTux8623,

I’m arriving too late, in any case if you are logged and you are in a community screen, the create post option is in the floating action button “+” in the bottom right corner.

After boots on the ground comment, French PM doubles down: 'Putins troops are already in our country', pointing at Le Pen (www.lemonde.fr)

By raising for the first time the idea of sending troops to Ukraine, the French leader “has taken a further step toward belligerence,” blasted his rival Marine Le Pen, of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party. She accused him of “posing an existential risk to 70 million French people, and more particularly to our...

DieguiTux8623,

Personally I have always thought Attal to be unqualified and inapt for the role. Why is he not arguing about the political program of the opposition instead? Does he have any evidence of this accusation? Seems like a childish way to try to rule out and delegitimize the opposition (which is authoritarianism, not democracy). Le Pen’s far right populism is b…it but this is NOT the way to contrast it.

DieguiTux8623,

I love that meme and I already sent it to my friends, unfortunately for me not only I remained poor but I also interiorized so much the idea that “it’s my fault and something must be wrong with me” that I ended up thinking my boomer parents were just right about everything.

I am leaning towards skepticism about every hint that a “different future is possible” and that social justice will prevail in the end. The current geopolitical, environmental, economic and financial crises point to something else.

DieguiTux8623,

In Italian too “la lavatrice”. And the dishwasher too, “la lavastoviglie”. btw we have gender fluid nouns like “the table” = “il tavolo” / “la tavola” with slightly different usage patterns.

Italian and Spanish are easier than French because the final -o (masculine) or -a (feminine) usually give a hint, with a few expections you have to learn by heart (“la mano” meaning “the hand” in both languages for example)…

DieguiTux8623,

I was joking, but there are nouns like “tavolo/tavola” or “mattino/mattina” which are used with slightly different meanings in different contexts…

Ursula von der Leyen is seeking a second term as head of the EU's powerful Commission (apnews.com)

Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen will seek a second term as head of the European Union’s powerful Commission in a move that could make her the most significant politician representing the bloc’s 450 million citizens in over a generation....

DieguiTux8623,

The ruin of Europe.

DieguiTux8623,

I consider her morally and materially responsible of the suicidal destruction of the whole continent during the last 4 years (first the poor management of the pandemic, then the two wars at the borders of Europe).

Poland's new government deprograms its once far-right public media (www.npr.org)

WARSAW, Poland — It’s 7:30 in the evening in Warsaw, and public news broadcaster TVP Info is about to broadcast live to millions of viewers across Poland. Producers in a crowded control room scurry in and out, sometimes stopping to peer through a narrow window into a studio where the host reads from a teleprompter....

DieguiTux8623,

Good luck to all Europe… we’re doomed!

A RULE SPY'S IN THE BASE?! (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I searched up “Lemmy” on the PlayStore and noticed that Reddit appears right before the last lemmy client in that search X3 do u guys know if there r any other lemmy clients worth trying? I randomly felt like trying all I could find and for now I’ll stay on Jerboa and the Web UI but I use Voyager too now, mainly for DMs...

DieguiTux8623,

What features are missing that you would like to see? Apart from the text size, what are the other bugs you found? I just ask you to take a couple of minutes to answer, I think the project is very poorly maintained but no one’s voice has ever been ignored.

DieguiTux8623,

Thanks, I’ll look into it: does it happen only in some screens (e.g. community detail or comment detail or settings) or in general the whole UI is lagging?

DieguiTux8623,

Hi and thanks for trying it out! I have been working on content font sizes (there were some rendering problems I realized) but I’m curious about having different dimensions for different parts of the content (currently there are two options, one for the menus/buttons of the app, the other for posts and comments). What more fine-grained control do you think would be useful?

DieguiTux8623,

Ok the drop downs I see. thanks! As for the vote format, you can choose the “separate” option to split positive and negative votes:

DieguiTux8623,

Seems legit! Thanks for answering so quickly I can definitely work on it! let’s see if in future releases it improves. ty! 🙏

DieguiTux8623,

Done here, this week’s development release will contain the new feature! Thanks again for the report.
