As I always say, as long as the wallpaper is family-friendly and not promoting anything bad like terrorism or racism, someone being not ok with it is solely their problem. People should pay attention on more important things instead of microbullying and judging meaningless stuff. You may want to temporarily adapt to a person that’s important to you in case you’re afraid of them being not ok with it or something like that but there’s no point in doing this with coworkers. It’s just ridiculous.

I’d say Linux distro migration checklist completed.

Also that is a (mostly) good selection of apps right there.

I don’t consider the image sexual. Maybe I don’t understand something idk. And anything sexual is not family friendly obviously

Adwaita icons issues and highly suspicious management probably

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

There indeed wasn’t anything about Adwaita icons (which is an issue on itself because the team isn’t fixing it but that’s besides the point) but there was stuff about management. Every blog post is basically a management report

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Is this some kind of discrimination or a racist post?

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmm that’s at least extremely inappropriate in this community, especially now.

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I noticed this too on my slowest machine. I guess you should just use native packages or other formats to fix it (as the other person said). I’d stick with Flatpak if possible though. It’s more secure

GolfNovemberUniform, (edited )
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I think the issue is Play Integrity/SafetyNet. If you can’t lock the bootloader, you can’t get it without using illegal hacks. GrapheneOS only passes Basic Integrity but that’s just details

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

You need to understand your threat model. Some apps are very secure but extremely inconvenient and hard to use. Others are more convenient but may not be able to hide the fact of a conversation between certain users for example

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

The devs collecting and selling the data to advertisers and enemy governments I guess. Just use open-source apps and self-hosted data storage

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t use such apps so can’t recommend anything. Ask someone who knows more about the topic

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well I think I heard it does but I don’t remember how it’s called

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Just buy a used one. It’s good for the environment and you don’t give money to Google

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I can’t really think of anything now because Android FOSS apps ecosystem is really good. What I want to suggest is contributing to already existing projects sometimes. It’s faster and just another thing you can do to help open-source ecosystems

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Speaking of reviews, aren’t there special review websites in most of the countries?

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Unfortunately in some countries web banking apps are not allowed afaik. Very good answer though

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Matrix is kinda janky and unstable

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m thinking of this too. I heard there’s only one good alternative dialer app (don’t remember if it was Koler or not). We have a lot of FOSS SMS apps but no dialer ones for some reason

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well if openstreetmaps implemented the same thing it would be useless because there are not many people using it

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Yea having the ability would be nice. I’m not sure it’s possible to implement without sacrificing privacy though

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh I didn’t know it couldn’t work without the app. Nvm then

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well even if someone creates it, it will still act like a web session. It will just be a frontend. You can’t create a separate app with authentication and everything because it’s proprietary (so you can’t see how authentication works) and messages are E2EE

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well yes but it’s almost impossible

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Now that can be an issue for some people (I mean secret contracts and stuff like that). I don’t use an image editor but if I did, I’d use Krita btw

Experimenting with local alt text generation in Firefox Nightly – Mozilla Hacks - the Web developer blog (hacks.mozilla.org)

I think this way of implementing and using AI is actually good from all perspectives (probably except some legal aspects but I don’t think Mozilla will add a legally grey feature). What do you think about it?...

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

It doesn’t look like it offers any privacy but it’s a huge project. I’ll see how it goes. I’m already not very optimistic about it though

GolfNovemberUniform, (edited )
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well the internet is now extremely bloated, outdated and monopolized. Sometimes you need a new thing, especially when nobody is ever going to fix the old one. Alternatives are always good to have as well. I’m not saying that the internet should be replaced though, just analyzing

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Gaming distros sometimes can have slightly worse performance than normal ones due to bloat and aesthetics features (especially blur). They might have optimizations for some hardware but the difference is like 2-5% at most. Other than that they’re just more convenient and faster to set up for gaming. If you want good performance, use a rolling release to get latest drivers and try both X11 and Wayland to see what works better in the games you play. A lightweight DE/WM can give you a couple extra FPS in some cases too

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes but sometimes it helps. Look at the real tests

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar
  • bad multithreading: that means more cores are free for apps
  • Bad available RAM utilization: in my testing distros that used “free RAM is wasted RAM” philosophy were always slower than normal ones
  • less stuff = more performance and vsync is bad
  • BRUH what? What does Valve have to do with DEs? You definitely lost me there

I get that you’re a Plasma lover but don’t say bad things about others DEs because of it. Also I am saying once again: go take a look at real life tests online if you don’t believe me. Word against a word doesn’t lead to anything except for a fight. And please stop trusting theories without trustworthy experimental proofs. That leads to trusting Big Tech or other scammy people/companies.

I like this one. It’s quite new (so you don’t say that the situation has changed) and I think it explains quite well. I can’t give you many links because I don’t have much free online time anymore. I guess you can try to find more comparisons and real researches by yourself and I do apologize for the inconvenience

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Idk if a warning is a good idea too. As you said, most of the apps are unverified. If a beginner sees warnings when installing every package, it will raise some questions

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Being unable to install 90% of the popular apps without diving into settings does not make sense for a beginner-focused distro whatsoever

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Or oh linux has only sketchy unverified ones and I need to master the terminal to install official apps

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

QWERTY is the only keyboard layout that matters (for most languages).

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

What even are these layouts? Macintosh ones?

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

But the character key layout is still QWERTY

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh ok now I get it. Thanks for explaining

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes. The reasons are not enough for many people but for many others they are. Just look at the market share stats of the last 3 years or so

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Discord doesn’t have encryption and, according to the terms of service, can read your messages. If you care about privacy, I definitely would not recommend using it for private conversations, especially after recent rumors about adding ads. I think they won’t lose the opportunity to use your DMs for it

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

I have a Seagate Barracuda in my gaming rig and it’s making really concerning sounds since the very beginning. Even my 12 years old laptop’s drive isn’t that bad

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmm that sounded a bit sus to me. I would highly suggest you not to work for unethical companies, mister/miss

GolfNovemberUniform, (edited )
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Your decisions are your decisions. My job is to promote ethics and to interrupt the work of unethical companies. Being ignorant and working for evil companies just for convenience is not good imo

Are there any maps apps that rip data from Google Maps?

I want to ungoogle myself as much as possible, but I’ve found that Google Maps is by far the best dataset for maps. I can search ‘fast food’ and it’ll pull up anything related to that near me. I’ve tried things like OrganicMaps, and while it is blazing fast and very private in comparison to Google Maps, it...

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Well in this particular case the user seems to lack openstreetmaps’ data. For such cases a frontend would be nice to have

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmm you may be right
