I wouldn’t advertise on the premise that Windows is a horrible, privacy invasive OS. Even though it’s true that would easily be grounds for Windows to claim defamation and pummel the entire thing into the ground with legal fees

I feel like Linux alternatives often falter by trying to offer as extensive of a feature set as the proprietary options. GIMP would be better if it simplified it’s menu’s and focused on offering a strong central feature set, then expand on that core over time to offer a powerful workflow of it’s own.

I noticed this especially with FreeCAD, which is trying to do like 12 things for some reason? Just offer intuitive parametric cad and focus on it. We don’t need OpenSCAD inside FreeCAD because OpenSCAD is already it’s own thing for example.

TheMonkeyLord,

That makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. For some reason I never factored that individuals were extending apps for their own use cases lmao

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah that is wild. Back on windows I had a three monitor setup at one point and honestly rarely utilized the whole of it.

Ever since moving to Linux and learning about virtual desktops I have never felt the need for more than one monitor. So I could hardly imagine the need for seven beyond novelty lol.

Because they can as well as being fun and novel to try and beat the game in weird, unintuitive ways? There are challenge runs similar to this* in Minecraft that get super popular all the time.

Similar in a conceptual sense, I’ve no idea the relative difficulty of these two different games nor the differing challenges offered in playing these way

It is for the sake of combatting the commonly held belief that you can’t do anything without the terminal in Linux.

Progress on the accessiblility, and GUI centric applications and functionality in Linux has been huge in the last decade or two. It is now entirely possible to use a Linux system while rarely needing the terminal. And if you have someone techy helping set it up for you then it is possible to never have to.

Any modern distro.

There are GUI methods for adding repositories to every major software center to my knowledge, and it isn’t very hard.

Kate, and other modern file editors are more than equipped to handle some config files, that’s probably the simplest thing ever.

There are multiple GUI front ends for samba.

Don’t comment on the usability of Linux GUI if you haven’t even tried in the last 20 years like seriously

Would not mind at all if consoles got lumped in and forced to allow alternative app stores

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah that’s why I put it in quotes, it just kept popping up when I searched for distros more inclined towards gaming lol.

Yeah I didn’t know about bazzite before going about this whole thing, but I am not going to try gaming on my system until nvk becomes more capable. Even then only light work.

I’m not necessarily a begginer as I have been using Linux for a few years now, but arch is definitely out of my wheelhouse

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Rebasing is easily one of the coolest features of the atomic suite. I will definitely look into bazzite more in the future, just wish I knew about it before all this lmao

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

I reckon if I go about trying to game again I will just go ahead and rebase to bazzite. Seems the easiest route

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

This makes a lot of sense, though I can’t help but think about the fact that all these distros were once brand new projects that people had to go out on a limb and try out before they became what they are today.

Though I also guess these projects had more official dedicated support.

In any case, I won’t be the one going out on a limb for a while now lmao

You even see this with games that were insanely cash grabby from ten or so years ago. Borderlands 2 made you pay for every level cap increase and tiny piece of updated content as it rolled out. The handsome collection fixed that, but it’s still true that it really tried to toll you at every corner. Game is still highly regarded though.

The thing that kept me attached to VR was Echo. Guess what they did to one of my literal favorite games

Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China (www.washingtonpost.com)

Apple has complied with the Chinese government’s request to remove several popular communication apps from its app store, including WhatsApp, Threads, Signal, and Telegram, due to national security concerns. This action was taken following a directive from the Cyberspace Administration of China. These apps have been crucial...

I wonder if self hosted fediverse stuff could gain a bit of traction 🤷

TheMonkeyLord,

Not only is this comment stupid, but it isn’t even remotely true. There are tons of famous, powerful individuals in all stretches of the public sphere that actively support Trump and the Republican party.

TheMonkeyLord,

I didn’t quite figure out the issue. It seemed to be a problem with directx, and I wasn’t certain how to proceed. I chose to uninstall the nvidia drivers and proceed, for the time, with integrated graphics on my Intel chip until NVK ships with fedora 40

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Good, use them for something worthwhile.

It is dystopian really the nature of shuffling hundreds or thousands of people to a building, into a cubicle, in front of a computer for 8 hours a day.

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

This is awesome! I don’t use the dedicated GPU on my laptop for anything outside light gaming, so I will definitely be switching to this as soon as it is available for Fedora

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, the game’s popularity comes directly from it’s gimmicky nature and not from any actual good gameplay loop. Not a single idea, mechanic, or even item is original.

I played for two days with friends and got over it. And I imagine for many, once the appeal of the gimmick wears thin, it’s all and over with

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

You know what? I agree with that.

I was taking my personal opinion and applying that at large, and forgot it was early access. A bit short sighted of me.

I hope the game has a bright future, even if it may not appeal to me.

Distributor of donations?

Does anyone know of a way to distribute donations to multiple open source projects at once? I would like to donate more frequently and broadly but because of the large number of different projects it would be laborious and inefficient to donate small fractions of what I can afford to each of them manually. What would be helpful...

This looks really cool! Didn’t know anything like it existed

TheMonkeyLord,

You could at least act ignorant rather than trying to logic your hatefulness

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

I have been trying to understand this for a minute and I can’t seem to understand why you would use it on a personal workstation.

Like it makes sense for servers, and for deploying accross multiple systems in a corporate or public setting, but beyond that it seems like it is just adding unnecessary steps if you try to use it on your personal rig.

Maybe I’ll need to just give in and try it for a week to a month to see the appeal

TheMonkeyLord,
@TheMonkeyLord@sopuli.xyz avatar

Fascinating,

Again I haven’t actually tried it. I went to install fedora kinoite(?) On an extra laptop I have to try it out but apparently the memory isn’t seated correctly, so I will have to fix that real quick.

I also watched The Linux Experiment’s video on it and cleared up some confusion

I tried, I really did

I’ve been an IT professional for 20 years now, but I’ve mainly dealt with Windows. I’ve worked with Linux servers through out the years, but never had Linux as a daily driver. And I decided it was time to change. I only had 2 requirements. One, I need to be able to use my Nvidia 3080 ti for local LLM and I need to be able...

This is great advice!

More people should turn to linux, absolutely, but it shouldn’t be just because it is linux. I think people should look at what they want from their device in particular, look at what is offerred by multiple systems and os’, and decide from there that they want to use linux because it does x, y, z best.

That is what made me decide to use linux as more than just a project or afternoon curiosity!
