Weirdfish,

Agreed, I started in electronics repair in the 90s, and began learning to code in 2004. 20 years and over a dozen languages later and I feel I am still learning to code.

People say that programming jobs are going to go away because of LLMs, but I don’t see it, at least not any time soon.

They have been trying to eliminate programmers in my primary language since before I started, and I still have steady work.

The thought that a large number of people from non-tech backgrounds can just become proficient programmers in a reasonable amount of time is of course insane. I’ve known many very talented techs who burned out and gave up trying to learn to program.

Something has to be done, and I don’t pretend for a moment I have any answers. I have traveled through many small towns all around the US, and the decline in the past 10 years or so is really depressing to see.

Weirdfish,

Somehow I had missed that Bannerlord has come to consoles, been waiting for this one a long time.

Sequels often disappoint, but so far this one strikes a great balance between keeping what made the original fun, incorporating new ideas, and adding a ton of quality of life features that fix what made the original a bit frustrating.

Obviously porting this kind of game to a controller is a huge task, and over all they did a good job. Some of the map and menu navigation is a bit clunky, but in almost every way it’s better than warband.

Looking forward to never being able to finish this one either.

Weirdfish,

I really need to get over the early learning curve and get into this game.

I’ve tried a few times and don’t know why it doesn’t engage me.

Give it another try tonight.

Weirdfish,

I’m not any good at deck building games, but my girlfriend is pretty close to platinuming it on PS4 and I have to say, that game just gets weirder and weirder.

Weirdfish,

Just finished my first permadeath vegan play through (never caught a single fish, though I admit I ran over a few hundred).

Weirdfish,

It’s one of those I downloaded, played 10 minutes of, and then got distracted by something else. I’ve done a good job avoiding spoilers, I’ll check it out next.

Weirdfish,

So, the first 30 minutes go like this. Find the stuff to make and craft the knife, scanner, fins, air tanks, and building tool.

You can eat kelp and make bleach>water w salt and coral to stay alive, though it’s a LOT of kelp.

Then head straight to southern island to scan the multipurpose room, indoor and outdoor grow beds, and grab lantern fruit and marble mellons.

You can then build a base and grow all the food you will ever need. I stock up on a ton of bleach and make water as needed, though the food also restores some hydration.

I usually have this done before the Aurora explodes.

Once you have the cyclops you can plant in there as well. Three lantern fruit trees per base is all the food you will need in the game, and marble melons have a lot of water.

The only thing you miss out on really is the emergency air bladder, as that requires a fish. To make up for it I carry a second air tank when diving deep or exploring wrecks. I also build outdoor grow beds w brain corals in strategic places as emergency air supplies.

Honestly, I started it as a lark, and found it so enjoyable because I never get distracted chasing down and catching fish.

Weirdfish,

No, haven’t seen it, but will check it out.

Weirdfish,

I hit a wall at trig. Far as I got in math, and I’ve been a programmer for over half my career.

Have always wanted to go back and learn trig and calc, but have never had the chance. Probably at this point would do better just to sit down w a text book and teach myself.

Weirdfish,

Mass effect LE, first time playing as a renegade and absolutely loving it.

Never played as a biotic before either so it really does feel new. Just started ME3 last night after one hell of a suicide mission.

Weirdfish,

Killing 300,000 Batarins with an asteroid

Weirdfish,

It’s real, and you owe it to yourself to watch it.

Weirdfish,

Playing it now for the first time and just recently did that, and the main story priest mission, two of the more memorable missions I’ve done in a long time and has totally sold me on this game.

The mechanics are different, and may put people off, but once you settle into it I think the controls and various game mechanics are really good.

Weirdfish,

Dont know about PC but it has invert on PS4 cause I always play w Y inverted.

If its on PC, I have to assume there is a setting in controller software to allow for it even if the game doesnt.

Weirdfish,

I’ve bought all the soulsborne games on release going back to Demons Souls, and I just sucked at them.

I am finally playing Bloodborne after giving up at the first boss many times over the years, playing co op with my girlfriend, who has beaten them all and platinumed quite a few.

While I got good enough to beat most of them, except Sekiro, I just couldn’t get the rhythm of Bloodborne, and always gave up, even though I know many people consider it the best in the series.

Going back to my tried and true method of “Just keep grinding and leveling up till you figure it out” finally worked, I beat the first main boss yesterday (with her as summons).

Really looking forward to this one as I’ve done a pretty good job of avoiding spoilers.

Weirdfish,

Both perfect dark and goldeneye had dual analog support on the N64, though only in single player. Was my first experience with dual analog and all my friends thought I was nuts holding two controllers. Then the Ps2 came out w dual stick and we never looked back.

Weirdfish,

Kerbal Space Program

If I had to pick one moment in all of gaming that felt like a real achievement, landing on the Mun for the first time was is something I’ll never forget.

Doom 1993

Sure there was Wolfenstein, but Doom just blew our doors off when it released. Countless hours late night in the computer lab playing deathmatch, my first introduction to creating mods and maps, so many great memories.

Subnautica

Not my usual style of game, but this one is special. First time I played I did an hour or so to understand the basics, then restarted on permadeath. It took a very long time, but I eventually beat the game in a single life. The entire time was spent in a constant state of zen like terror.

Some honorable mentions would be GTA Vice City where I was heavily involved with the modding community, the Mass Effect Trilogy as the most epic story on gaming, Far Cry 2, the Dark Souls series, Infinifactory, and Cities Skylines.

Weirdfish,

Fallout 3 used RPG mechanics that caused weapon spread based on character stats, so unless you put points into gun skills you’re going to have a hard time by design.

I’ve beaten all three modern games on console both VATS and free aim. Fallout 4 has by far the best shooter mechanics, it’s what ID software does. Iron sites in Vegas certianly helped as an FPS, but it also removed the RPG gun spread and replaced it with requirements to use the various weapons. This made your ability with guns binary, you could either use it or you couldn’t. In 3 it was a progression.

In the end, I guess it just comes down to taste and what you are looking for in the game. Its Bethesda so you know there is going to be jank. The shitty collision objects in 3 were always far more a problem for me than the weapon mechanics.

Having said all that, I’ve been watching the development of this mod for a long time and wish I had a PC to play it on.

Weirdfish,

The Mongols showed up and ruined everything.

Weirdfish,

For me it’s the fact that it took me YEARS to git gud. Bought Demons souls before the hype, and had no clue. After a couple trys it went on the shelf. Went on to buy every souls game, cause I knew they were amazing, but never finished one or even got half way.

It was watching walk throughs, speed runs, and various challenge runs on youtube that, along with hours and hours of grinding, got me comfortable with these games.

Playing DS1 with fresh eyes and my current skills and knowledge of the other games would be amazing, as it really has the best world.

Having said all that, my answer is the Mass Effect trilogy.

Weirdfish,

Haven’t played it on VR, but man that sounds great. My girlfriend is deep into a hardcore play through now and it’s so much fun to watch.

Weirdfish,

I still havent played Morrowind, though somewhere along the line I picked up a PC version. One of these days I’ll have a gaming machine.

Weirdfish,

The first time I played it, I did about an hour to get my feet wet, ha ha, but then switched to hardcore mode. It took a long time, but I did finish the game in a single life. Subnautica without a real fear of death just isnt the same.

Playing through again as a vegan, and recording it to make a tips video. If you haven’t played it without catching a fish I highly recommend it. Only thing you miss out on is the air bladder, but not getting distracted all the time chasing fish really changes the way I explore the game.

Another fun challenge is never making a compass or becans, forces you to learn the map.

Weirdfish,

I bought it at launch, and on PS4 it was actually an unplayable mess.

I’ve since gotten a PS4 pro, and still haven’t loaded it up again.

Pretty sure I’ll get a PS5 this year, so I’m thinking of waiting till the to play it.

With large games like this, I know I’m going to sink a lot of time into my first lay through, figure why not wait until I can do it right.

Weirdfish,

While I agree with you, the fact that no game has released in the past 10 years without major patches and updates means what’s on that physical media is useless

Weirdfish,

When Oblivon was an Xbox exclusive, Sony turned to Fromsoft to create an RPG for Playstation to compete with ES4.

The whole project tanked, and from the ashes we go Demon’s Souls. A whole new genre of gaming was born, and we’re all better off for it.

Hopefully something similar will happen this gen.

I have always been a huge fan of Bethesda games, well, fallout and elder scrolls at least. I would love to play ES6.

That said, there is no way I’m but another game system just for a handful of games.

Honestly, considering that Skyrim has been ported to every single device w a processor in it, I’d be very surprised if we don’t see a PS5 release of Starfield next xmass season. That is just way too much money to be left on the table.

Weirdfish,

I’ve always been a fan, but no way I’m buying a second system just for Bethesda games.

Yes, I bought a switch to play Zelda, but that’s where I draw the line.

Skyrim has released on basically every platform that exists, I have to assume Starfield, and ES6, will eventually release on PS5. That is just too much money to leave on the table.

On the other hand, Demon Souls was spawned out of a failed PS exclusive to go head to head against Oblivion, and I’d dare say the souls series have given more to gaming than the past decade of Bethesda releases.
