(of a disease) existing in almost all of an area or in almost all of a group of people, animals, or plants

“An area” could be a country, a Canadian pandemic is possible just as a global pandemic is.

explore_broaden,

I never noticed that the plural of axe and axis are spelled the same.

explore_broaden,

I do this on Hyprland all the time, but it’s a tiling window manager. I’m not sure any desktop environments have support for it.

explore_broaden,

I doubt it’s the price that’s mandated, they probably mean the state mandated minimum coverage.

explore_broaden,

I looked at the paper they’re talking about (which has not yet been peer reviewed), and I couldn’t find any past peer reviewed research from the author. The paper also doesn’t really explain any of its arguments past referencing sometimes unrelated stuff that “sounds scientific,” so I suspect it will be rejected from any reasonable journal. Some of their graphs seem to have problems and their comparisons to the mass of the Van Allen belts seem questionable. Also radiation belts don’t really “protect earth”.

Writing a news article based on a Arxiv article from an author that isn’t established seems extremely dubious.

explore_broaden,

Why 2005?

explore_broaden,

I have a 2014 Nissan Sentra (base model), and it doesn’t really have any tech. No touchscreen, no wireless (it doesn’t even have USB audio, only 2.5 mm), and not even cruise control. So 2005 is a lot older than touchscreen dominance.

explore_broaden,

Yeah it depends on what you get but there are definitely options in the last 10 years if you dislike touchscreens (I do, I wish there were more newer cars that don’t slurp up data to sell).

explore_broaden,

Because they are selecting proposals for the program, which includes a stipend (developers.google.com/…/student-stipends) of $1,500-$6,000 for the summer. So the process looks a little more like the process for applying for an internship.

explore_broaden,

That’s not true, the latest release was two weeks ago.

explore_broaden,

It’s still under the Mozilla foundation though, which is what people who are talking about Mozilla usually mean (they’re the ones collecting donations and the parent organization).

explore_broaden,

I’ve never really had issues with Fedora (has more up to date software vs Debian stable) or Debian, they generally just work. Back when I used arch there were a couple of times in about a year and a half where it stopped booting (mobile nvidia graphics forced me to do weird things that lead to issues), but that’s a less stable OS on top of a bad hardware setup for Linux (obligatory fuck Nvidia).

Plane veered off flight path after both pilots fell asleep, Indonesian authorities say (www.cnn.com)

Indonesia’s transport ministry will launch an investigation after two Batik Air pilots fell asleep during a recent flight, according to state news agency Antara, citing the ministry’s civil aviation director-general M Kristi Endah Murni....

explore_broaden,

Despite the phrasing in the top of the article (copied to the post), it sounds like the pilot had permission (from someone?) to rest and was intentionally sleeping, and it was only the co-pilot who accidentally fell asleep.

explore_broaden,

The reason given in the article the co-pilot accidentally fell asleep is because he has “one-month-old twins.”

explore_broaden,

Can’t argue with that

explore_broaden,

It’s posted to a privacy community and everyone is aware of the privacy concerns with anything Facebook. It’s pretty obvious that they’re saying that for some privacy-conscious people the answer to using Facebook Marketplace is no, but they want to know if anyone has advice for using it.

explore_broaden,

Where are you located? It’s only $3.10 here, and $2.80 or less when it’s on sale (fairly often).

explore_broaden,

I spend about $12/day on ingredients, which is about the cost of a single meal at McDonald’s which is far less healthy. I don’t think that actually stands up when you look at the prices of cheap food (chicken, rice, beans, other legumes, potatoes) plus the costs of sides (fruits, vegetables).

Asking for a Linux (or non-Windows) laptop during a job interview?

I’m interviewing for a software dev job currently (it’s in the initial stages). If things work out, I’d absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it… (If all computers left...

explore_broaden,

The Apple M_ processors are great for performance to power usage ratio (and peak performance in general), so a MacBook is a good choice of laptop (even to run Linux on it).

explore_broaden,

I run Asahi Linux on the M1, and it’s been working great for the last six months or so.

Edit: I wouldn’t necessarily recommend buying one to run Linux at the moment, for one thing they’re overpriced, but I was clarifying why the original comment would have suggested an M1.

explore_broaden,

I think the metric works pretty well if you are willing to quit a game if it’s not interesting enough.

explore_broaden,

Factorio is probably one of the best deals I’ve gotten; I paid $30 and at this point I’ve played it for at least 200 hours because I find it such a fun game.

explore_broaden,

It’s true, you caught me
