jjlinux,

Bazzite is a good tinkering distro to get your feet wet into atomic distros, but in my experience, it’s only a matter of time before it breaks. I’ve tried it in 3 different devices, including my steam deck, and they all broke by the 3rd or 4th update.

jjlinux,

Nobara is great if you’re into Fedora. PopOS! or Linux Mint if you’re into Debian. Those will take you further way faster and with less pain than any Arch based distro.

jjlinux,

Apparently this one of those YMMV deals. Installation is painless and quick, for sure. And it does work fine (albeit a bit slower than Fedora Workstation when loading and firing up software). But after a few updates, Wayland stops working for some reason and I have to log into x11 instead.

I’ve no idea what the issue is, but I was only trying it, so I just went back to my trusty Fedora.

jjlinux,

Is that you Rossmann?

jjlinux,

I’ve been searching for a way to control my Kiyo X on Fedora. This is great. Thank you.

jjlinux,

Very. Pretty affordable and it just works. Granted, I don’t do much streaming or recording off of it, but have been complimented several times in meetings over Zoom, Zoho Meetings and Teams. The highest setting is 1080p@30 and I’ve had no issues at all.

It has a mic, but I don’t recall ever using it as Webcam microphones are known to be horrible.

Campaigns Can Now See What You Watch on TV. (www.notus.org)

Televisions that can stream platforms like Hulu or Max usually come loaded with technology that collects information on what viewers are watching, and buyers consent to have their viewing tracked when they open their new TV and click through terms of service agreements. Sometimes, data firms can connect those viewing habits to a...

jjlinux,

That is the solution. Connect your box to the internet, never the TV.

jjlinux,

Any app purchased from the Google Play Store needs to be downloaded and updated from the same in order for the paid functionality to work. Alternatively, download it cracked from somewhere else and risk potentially getting an infected app.

jjlinux,

This is the unfortunate but absolute truth.

Is the Proton (Mail, VPN, Password Manager) ecosystem any good?

Due to the recent announcement of Proton moving to a non-profit structure (although not becoming fully non-profit) I’ve decided to take another look at them and really, Proton Unlimited is an enticing offer. However, the fact of everything from mail, to accounts, to storage being in one place is somewhat disconcerting. Also I...

jjlinux,

You need to take all your passwords out of LastPass and move to anything else. Bitwarden, ProtonPass, KeyPass, even Nextcloud, but run away from LastPass as soon as humanly possible. That shit and screaming your credentials at the top of your lungs while someone records it is the same crap.

jjlinux,

Just voted and left a comment. Spot on suggestion.

jjlinux,

KDEconnect or gsconnect if you’re on KDE or Gnome respectively.

jjlinux, (edited )

Oh, nice. Thank you, I’ll take it for a spin.

Went to look into it, and seems to be in very early stages. I’ll set up the flatpak on my computer and laptop to help where I can, seems like a very nice option. Do you know how to integrate it to Android? I could not find anything on that.

Edit: So it works from the KDEConnect Android app. Nice.

jjlinux,

Now, where did I put that Katana?🤔

jjlinux,

And even sadder is that users choose to still use those companies.

At the end of the day, we all have a choice. This happens to those that allow it. We try to stay safe from burglars, traffic accidents, illness, etc., but choose to still use these companies. That’s a choice, and there are ways to improve our lives, like removing them from our lives.

jjlinux,

There are many laws that go entirely against the constitution of a country. You can start by looking at DMCA laws that violate a bunch of rights in MANY countries. Legally gray is falling short, those are illegal, and still get enforced because $$$

jjlinux,

Independent firms hired by them? Right. I don’t think “independent” means what they think it means.

jjlinux,

Where is this information from an independent party (not from Crapple)?

jjlinux,

Ah, here it is BMW drivers, most have Apple stickers on their cars, and they are all douchebags.

jjlinux, (edited )

That could very well be the case. However, I would have to be seriously gullible to believe anything those closed companies promote an “independent” party paid by them found, moreso if the findings only serve to push their proven lies forward for “public perception’.

In this case it’s and actual independent party auditing open source code, that makes much more sense.

Just because dollars exchange hands doesn’t mean the data provided is invalid.

You are absolutely correct. What means the provided data is invalid is the fact that these companies are regularly found lying about how they handle our " privacy” or how secure they are. Just search for “Apple lied” and see all the instances and how they try to bury it all via PR bullshit.

I believe that, out of Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Apple, Apple is the lesser evil, but that means shit when they all do the same, just in different ways and at varying degrees.

jjlinux,

Tubular is my absolute YT client. Love it.

jjlinux,

That didn’t keep Amazon from adding ads to the paid version of Prime and making a higher paid tier. How much easier is it for Google to implement the same?

jjlinux,

Seeks like a bunch of us chose to do the same. These companies actually believe there is no end to what they think they’re entitled .

jjlinux,

I stand corrected.

The anti-AI sentiment in the free software communities is concerning. (lemmy.world)

Whenever AI is mentioned lots of people in the Linux space immediately react negatively. Creators like TheLinuxExperiment on YouTube always feel the need to add a disclaimer that “some people think AI is problematic” or something along those lines if an AI topic is discussed. I get that AI has many problems but at the same...

jjlinux,

That’s easy, move over to Windows or Mac and enjoy. I’ll stay in my dumb as Linux distros, thank you.

jjlinux,

Same as mine. But mine also gets confused regularly, and it gets worse with every new version (age) 🤣🤣

jjlinux,

Hands down the best screen shot app in Linux, in my opinion.

Do you think people would be okay with 'Recall' if Apple did it?

With the recent WWDC apple made some bold claims about privacy when it comes to so called Apple Intelligence. This makes me wonder if they did something to what Microsoft did with Recall feature, would people be less concerned and to an extend praise their effort?...

jjlinux,

What that Apple does is Open Source? This is the first time I’ve read this.

jjlinux,

Yup, that’s why I asked. I still hate Crapple and everything they stand for, but this is good data to start doing some in-depth research. Thanks.

jjlinux,

Who says I am a man? Just kidding, I am. I do hate Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta and every other company out there that operate business on a predatory model. Am I damaged? Absolutely, at so many levels it’s hard to count them. But that makes me just human, as you will find there is not 1 single human out there that is not damaged at some or other. On the brighter side, I am doing what I can to heal.

jjlinux,

I have heard of Darwin, and went back to read up on it to refresh my memory. While it is considered open source, it is also useless unless it is used for Apple’s closed source operating systems, as can be appreciated in this explanation:

In the beginning, Apple used to make Darwin available as a separate OS, including compiled binaries, installers, ISOs, etc. that you could install on Apple hardware. However, for many years now, Apple only provides a source code dump, every time a new release of macOS comes out. It isn’t even possible to compile this source code, because it depends on Apple’s internal build tools and build pipeline. There have been some projects trying to patch Darwin to compile it with publicly available tools, but those projects have all died from lack of interest.

Open Source should be compilable and able to be used, at least that’s my perspective, and I just may be wrong.

Here’s the article this came from on StackExchange:

jjlinux,

They play mostly on their Linux PCs, but they like to play Horizon on the Playstation, that and Sack Boy.

At the end of the day, Sony is just one more corp trying to get away with mining us all.

jjlinux,

I don’t say I trust him, don’t even know him. Having said that, his videos are mostly well evidenced, and it is still super fun to see him blasting these companies.

jjlinux,

No idea, I haven’t used anything form that company in about 7 years.

jjlinux,

Lol. Lol. Lol.

jjlinux,

I cannot confirm nor deny.

jjlinux,

Awesome. No idea what that means, but AWESOME!

jjlinux,

Very nice video. Beginners can really leverage it for a good and smooth(ish) start.

jjlinux,

Wao, Mandriva and DamnSmallLinux 🤣🤣🤣

jjlinux,

I’d recommend staying away from anything Asus due to their extreme enshittification.

I'm going to reinstall linux on my computer. What is it like to run something Silverblue based these days ?

I have been using CachyOS for more than 6 months at this point and I’m pretty happy with it. Among the many distros I tried, this is probably my favourite arch based distro. I initially installed it because it offered Hyprland desktop, and I didn’t want to bring over my messy config nor did I want to start from scratch. But...

jjlinux,

I tried Bazzite for a couple of months. After the 3rd or 4th update, Wayland started acting up, so I had to fall back to Xorg. So I ended up going back to Fedora Workstation. Other than that, when it was working, it worked great, dGPU or integrated, just worked. I did find it somewhat slower to boot, and the same for opening software, but nothing that I would have considered a deal killer.

Now, that’s just my personal experience, I’ve also read of people that have had nothing but a very solid experience.

jjlinux,

Oh, I didn’t think about it, but you’re right. That does make sense.

Strava alternative?

I need to track cardio with terrain data, but I’d rather not trust Strava with my privacy. I know there are some alternatives, but which one is the most reliable and feature-rich? I don’t have smart accessories, just and android phone. Preferably, I’d like an app that let’s me track added weights for calorie purposes...

jjlinux,

It does not mention FOSS anywhere, so it is highly unlikely it is. But I have to say, their privacy policy is not bad (not great either). Much better than most nowadays.

wandrer.earth/privacy

jjlinux,

I understand. I consider myself blessed that anything I need is actually much more performant and easier to use the foss optiins than any of their proprietary counterparts, but I’m also aware that is not the case for some people.

I hope those irreplaceable pieces of software you need at least start getting ported over to be supported on Linux.
