The “problem” with UT is that normal GNU/Linux apps don’t work on it, or only with significant adaptations. This makes UT not really usable for people that want “real” Linux on their phones. I can understand people being unhappy about that as in the end UT isn’t really that much different from Android, which technically also runs Linux.

@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Heh, their Discord server name has literally “tankies” in its name. Not that I am surprised…

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You need to first investigate what kind of protections your banking app has, as that will be most likely the largest issue with anything non-stock Android.

Lots of bugs in federated moderation…

And Sony is still complaining about bad sales… I wonder if Microsoft will even bother with another console again. I guess they will pull a SEGA and just start selling games on other consoles.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

That seems very unlikely as the Switch was incredibly successful and Nintendo has no reason to merge with anyone.

The only one of the three big console producers that is likely to change to a different model regarding hardware is Microsoft. Maybe they will not drop out entirely, but it is unlikely that they will try to compete again with a future PS6.

I think that CPU only supports up to 8GB RAM. Also the m2 is only for Wifi cards I think.

I have a somewhat similar ASUS board and it is quite ok otherwise, but don’t expect wonders from that CPU.

A bit annoying will be that you need to either use one of the four SATA ports for the system drive, or find some way to boot from the PCIe 1x port. The similar ASUS board that I have does not support booting from NVMe drives though, so even if you added an adapter for this it probably wouldn’t work (maybe if there is an BIOS update for it).

You could boot from a USB3 drive… not ideal but workable. Or add more SATA ports via an PCIe 1x extension card… but those might be hard to find, usually they require a longer (4x?) PCIe port.

P.S.: if you end up buying that board I can sell you 2x 4GB DDR3 SODIMMs that I have currently no use for :p

poVoq,

ark.intel.com/…/intel-celeron-processor-j3455-2m-…

Says 8gb max. My board only has one SODIMM slot, so I can’t test it, but I would say it is a bit of a risk to just assume it will work with more.

collaborative map software?

Avenza seems to be the go-to app. It works pretty well and all, but I’m wanting to know if there’s any software available that can allow a team of people to simultaneously access and make edits/notes to a geo-referenced map. It also need to have kind of the same base functionality of being able to show your current location...

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

There are lots of options depending in the level of complexity you need. On the more complex end of the spectrum there is for example: merginmaps.com

Is Privacy Worth It? (blog.thenewoil.org)

When I announced I would be closing my communities earlier this year, a curious thing happened: a surprising number of regulars replied with some variation of “I think this is my exit.” While some were specifically talking about Matrix, claiming that mine was the only room they were really active in and therefore they saw no...

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

The problem is that the so called privacy community is full of security LARPers that have no idea what their threat model is and in addition many snakeoil vendors trying to sell you (usually unnecessary or even counter-productive) VPNs etc.

So it’s understandable that people get tired of these grifters and stop bothering.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Impossible to say without providing more details. But somewhere between 10€ and 200€ a month depending on your setup and how you calculate in hardware costs.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Well, I am paying less, but if you realistically calculate the costs of hardware over its lifetime, this is certainly not unrealistic for many homelabs.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It’s relatively popular in DACH countries.

I use it sometimes. It has its fair share of issues, and the back end is not open-source, but it is OK for the most part. Main benefit is that you don’t need a mobile number to sign up.

But if you are looking for an alternative IM to use with friends and family, I would rather suggest XMPP, specifically Snikket.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I use Arch btw. 😅 (well, actually I don’t any more, but this had to be here)

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

That isn’t a problem, but a feature, see: opensource.net/why-single-vendor-is-the-new-propr…

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

These days selling the software itself is rarely successful nor a particularly good business model. Basically only computer games still work like that, and the commercially really successful ones not any more either.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Sure, works great.

There is even an integration with Lemmy that server admins can use to give every account on their Lemmy server also an XMPP account with the same handle/address.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You need an Ejabberd server and this auth script: f-hub.org/Solarpunk/ejabberd-auth-lemmy

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I think this article does a better job at explaining the issue: opensource.net/why-single-vendor-is-the-new-propr…

CLA are a symptom of the overall problem and many corporate run projects are affected even if they don’t have a CLA (but are selective in what they merge).

poVoq, (edited )
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I have tried out their Kudos demo, which works great. Otherwise there is sadly not much you can try out yourself yet and self-hosting is a bit complicated from what I have seen in their documentation.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Ugh, that article almost perfectly embodies why the Nazi party in Germany called themselves “socialist”.

Taking the obvious failure of capitalism and blaming it on “elites” and “identity politics” is almost verbatim Goebbles propaganda, just that he used the terms “Jews” and “degenerates” as stand-ins for the same ideas.

[Question] Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I’m looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

poVoq, (edited )
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You might want to try Snikket for XMPP then. Really streamlined hosting experience all out of the box. But Ejabberd also improved massively in that regard and their Docker images and deb/rpm repos pretty much work out of the box these days.

I host both Ejabberd and Synapse since some years and while I can see how self-hosting Synapse is a bit more approachable for first time self-hosters since it uses mostly web-technology under the hood, Ejabberd has been much less of an headache to maintain over the years. It pretty much just works and uses very little system resources (contrary to Synapse, even though it has improved a bit in that regard lately).

Edit: OpenPGP is supported by some XMPP clients for many years and OMEMO is significantly less problematic than Matrix e2ee in my experience. Matrix is a never ending stream of forced key resets and “message could not be decrypted” if you use it with the official web-client.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Yes it does. It really is just a pre-configured Prosody server, made by one of the core Prosody developers.

Snikket does not mention XMPP intentionally as their entire reason for existing is that it is supposed to be XMPP for people that don’t care what XMPP is. They laid out that reasoning in a blog post a while ago.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It’s all copied from the Romans 🤷‍♂️

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

User created invites and admin approved application texts work fine.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

That’s a bit like asking a repo to explain what Mc Donalds is.

But if it is a TIL moment for you, don’t feel bad about it.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Exactly… easily replaceable but you have an endless whining of users that imagine they might somehow in the future need this one feature that office has but alternatives don’t.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

It’s a groupthink issue anyways. 3DSmax/Maya was the same for a long time, and “everyone” was saying Blender is not an alternative. And then some big companies switched to Blender and suddenly people stopped complaining about it. And while Blender did improve during that time, it did not improve so substantially that it really made all the difference.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I let you in on a secret: Discord also needs a server 🙃

But basically look for something that utilizes the Whisper AI model. This list has a few options, but I am not sure if there is newer stuff: github.com/sindresorhus/awesome-whisper

SimpleX Chat Ltd is a seed stage startup with a lot of user growth in 2022-2023, and a lot of exciting technical and product problems to solve to grow faster.

Run by a VC funded for-profit company. That really should tell you all you need to know. Sorry, but no thanks.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Where did I even mention Signal? Total strawman argument, as I don’t think Signal is a good option either.

But you go ahead and trust Simplex Chat Ltd. I guess some people only learn from their own mistakes 🤷‍♂️

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

You walked right into my deliberate rethorical trap 😅

There is no such thing as trustless computing, and anyone that tries to sell you that is scamming you or drank the same kool-aid.

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

Oh, my sweet sweet summer child… I have bad news for you 😆

poVoq,
@poVoq@slrpnk.net avatar

I am genuinely happy for them, but that still doesn’t mean I need or want to see random baby pictures twice a day.

P.S.: my basement is fine, thanks 😅
