The Alitos, the Neighborhood Clash and the Upside-Down Flag | Inside the escalating conflict on a bucolic suburban street that Justice Alito said prompted a “Stop the Steal” symbol at his home. (www.nytimes.com)

There are some differences: For instance, the justice told Fox News that his wife hoisted the flag in response to Ms. Baden’s vulgar insult. A text message and the police call — corroborated by Fairfax County authorities — indicate, however, that the name-calling took place on Feb. 15, weeks after the inverted flag was...

silence7,

The BVF is a joint fundraising committee — all it does is make it easy for somebody to donate big amounts and have it distributed out to a pre-determined list of recipients, in this case, the Biden campaign, DNC, and the state Democratic parties. It stinks that big contributions like that are allowed, but it’s very different from saying “Give me a billion dollars and I’ll favor you”

silence7,

As far as I can tell, the BVF is transferring money to the state parties exactly as promised.

silence7,

Right now, it’s local officials, not the executive branch doing it in a coordinated way. We don’t, for example, have the border patrol and FBI driving around in minivans with no insignia and name patch and snatching people off the street like we had during the Black Lives Matter protests under Trump.

silence7,

You definitely can — you don’t have basic rights during a deportation hearing, such as the right to an attorney. All it takes is a bunch of law enforcement who are willing to do it and orders from above.

silence7,

The key word in there is legally.

I see no indication that Trump would be in any way constrained by the law if in power again.

silence7,

Great that you voted, but third party basically throws your vote away in a first-past-the-post system.

Let’s look at three situations:

Scenario 1:

D: 1001 votes R: 1000 votes H: 0 votes

D wins

Scenario 2:

D: 1000 votes R: 1000 votes H: 1 vote

Tied election, decided by the House, so R wins

Scenario 3:

D: 999 votes R: 1001 votes H: 2 votes

R wins

This is why it makes enormous sense to avoid third parties in most of the US, and choose the major-party candidate you’d rather negotiate with.

silence7,

For 50 Republicans and about three Democrats in the Senate.

The Republicans are the big problem here.

silence7,

I’d expect them to go along with not filibustering it because people will know that they blocked it, and vote for Democrats instead.

silence7,

I’d rather Texans figure out what’s going on, and change who holds power.

silence7,

Which is exactly why it’s important that they not be allowed to hold any kind of power.

silence7,

Here’s the thing: if it comes down to private individuals and guns, we’ve already lost.

Way better off giving that money to Democratic campaigns or spending it on travel to a swing district or state to canvass voters.

silence7,

The Senate can’t do charges — that takes the House impeaching him or the Justice Department filing criminal charges. A senate committee can however, gather evidence, and then pass it to the Justice Department with a recommendation that they prosecute. That’s what’s going on here.

Probably can’t do one new set of crimes per day (the Senate doesn’t move that fast) but it’s definitely happening.

silence7,

To be fair, this is an investigation of a solicitation for a bribe which happened 15 days ago, and was reported by the Washington Post the morning after it happened.

Trump just can’t stop criming.

silence7, (edited )

It was at a political fundraiser; people there are supposed to be US citizens are have a green card (or be working as staff). So it was probably mainly the US oil companies, but they actively cooperate with overseas ones to push up prices.

Edit: I’ll note that in the past, Lukoil executives have gotten US citizenship, and contributed to Trump post-retirement

silence7,

He can’t — preemption means federal rules override state ones.

silence7,

Nostalgia creates a really rosy tint and a lot of people want fascism

silence7,

That actually depends a lot on who wins the upcoming presidential election. It’s possible that with pressure, a 2nd-term Biden administration would actually move forward with one.

silence7,

They had some inkling that there might be an issue, but the modern consensus (and oil company reaction to it) basically emerged in the late 1970s

silence7,

The rich have longer lifespans than the poor due to better access to medical care. I’m not going to count on it, especially when once you end democracy, you thend end up with the kids or friends of the dictator taking over after he dies, rather than a return to democracy.

silence7,

Once democracy is dead, his death won’t take us back to what we have today — we’ll end up with one of his kids or buddies running the show, and that can be even worse.

silence7,

If that’s what they started with, they managed to make significant edits, notably rescaling and moving the “unified third reich” text way to the left, while choosing to leave it in the final video.
