The 1864 ban will still be in effect for months though:

After being signed into law by the governor, the repeal can only take effect 90 days after the state legislature has its final adjournment.

The DAs who make those decisions in Arizona are elected at the county level, so the state AG can’t just order them to not prosecute.

silence7,

It’s the legal maximum fine. Judge can impose jail time, but didn’t this time. There are already four more gag order violations which will be discussed later in the week.

silence7,

They could, but doing that on the 2nd round of contempt charges later this week might reduce the odds of his becoming a martyr over it

silence7,

It won’t be timed like that due to his currently pending contempt charges — it’ll look like 30 days or less, happening in May.

Sortition was used in ancient Athens for a while for exactly this reason

silence7,

Plenty of people there don’t agree with how the politicians are acting. They just don’t have the power to replace them

silence7,

Make sure you check your voter registration — you’ll need to update it if you moved, changed names, or if you just haven’t voted in a while and got purged from the rolls.

silence7,

Importantly, Trump sees his political opponents as dogs:

‘Like a dog’: Trump has a long history of using canine insults to dehumanize enemies

silence7,

Right now, it’s looking like the Supreme Court is going to say “that’s not allowed” but do it in a way that prevents Trump from being tried before the election. This lets them say “we’re good and ethical” while protecting Trump from the consequences of his criminality:

The Supreme Court appeared poised to reject Donald Trump’s sweeping claim that he is immune from prosecution on charges of trying to subvert the 2020 election, but in a way that is likely to significantly delay his stalled election-interference trial in D.C.

silence7,

Because the other half would be his supporters.

silence7,

They’re being treated seriously because they’re made by Republicans, who are part of the same patronage machine as the judges.

It’s a gift link. You’ve got something unusual about your settings (eg: javascript disabled) if you’re hitting the paywall.

silence7,

There’s chunk of the bottom of the screen encouraging you to do those things, but it doesn’t in any way keep you from reading the article if you don’t, and you can just click the ‘x’ to remove it from the screen entirely.

silence7,

On my phone, the ‘x’ is just above the ‘to’ in the words “A Post subscriber gave you free access to this article.”

silence7,

It’s pretty big and visible on my phone. Not hard to find at all.

silence7,

It’s in the top right corner of the relevant dialog, which is pretty much where the ‘close this thing’ icon is on every other UI.

silence7,

It’s one person. People have unusual environments, aren’t paying attention, etc.

silence7,

All I can say is that it sounds like it renders differently for you than it does for me

If convicted, he’s a lot more likely to die in prison

The fate of emergency abortion care rests with Supreme Court (wapo.st)

Shanae Smith-Cunningham arrived at Memorial Regional Hospital on Dec. 21, 2022 — five days after her water broke, only halfway through her pregnancy. Despite her pleas for treatment and the risks to her health, staff at the Hollywood, Fla., hospital turned her away amid the state’s new abortion restrictions....

silence7,

The Supreme Court is happy to ban elective abortions. It’s not clear that they’re willing to accept a ban of ones where the woman’s life is in danger and the fetus isn’t going to survive.

silence7,

That’s an important question: if the court is specific in its answer, women will at least sometimes be able to access emergency medical care. If not, doctors won’t be willing to risk a murder conviction to help.

silence7,

I don’t believe that stated rationale from this court means much; they’re making this kind of decision on ideological grounds, and coming up with a post hoc rationalization.

silence7,

That exception is very much like the one in California, where the founders of a startup can be required to sign a noncompete when they sell it. Has essentially no material impact on anybody else.

FTC commissioners have a limited term of office, and no more than 3 are allowed to be members of one party.

A future Republican President could in fact change this by appointing a Republican majority. This makes it incredibly important to not allow that. That means not just planning to vote, but checking your registration to make sure it hasn’t been purged or in need of an update because you moved or changed names, volunteering and donating

silence7,

Jail and prison time are both possible though.

silence7,

Two possibilities:

  • The judge finds him guilty of contempt and orders a short jail term as punishment. Could happen any time now that he’s heard arguments, but the prosecution didn’t request it, so a $1000 fine is much more likely unless he keeps on violating the gag order.
  • The jury convicts him, and he’s then sentenced to a significant term. This won’t happen until the trial is over, several weeks hence
