if like, you aren’t too attached to the look of them, you could save a bunch by using an air cooler instead of an AIO water cooler, they don’t actually perform better than decent air coolers.

just get a shitty computer tbh, worse graphics is fine actually.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

like i usually hate the whole, “buy a 2tb ssd, its only like $60” line. like to a lot of people that isn’t something you can just drop casually for a video game (especially on top of the price of the game itself!) but I don’t really think thats the perspective this writer is coming from.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

whether or not games were ever like that isn’t actually relevent to the point they made, also tons of unfinished games are basically already sold as complete.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

bad, what could possibly justify someone being arrested over something like this? and the only one who could “deny pay” is the bosses anyway, game devs don’t get any sort of cut from profits.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

like, the game industry is incredibly exploitative, even if piracy does causes direct harm to it, thats honestly a good thing, it is set up to benefit publishers and share-holders over anyone else, especially the people actually making the games. supporting the end of that isn’t “hippy-dippy”

oh do u like metroidvanias? Apotheon is pretty short and has absolutely beautiful art.

Gone Home is a calm little exploration game u can complete in an afternoon, but it has plenty of secrets to find if u wanna dig around.

Just want a solid gaming laptop (reddit.com)

My mom likes to play No Man’s Sky and Valheim, but her Asus TUF started freezing on games. RMA found no problems and sent it back to her but it still happens. I ordered a Legion for her but now I see these posts about all Nvidia 40-series laptops freezing up. What’s a gaming mom supposed to do?

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

so like a lot of people will suggest a desktop pc, and if thats feasible for u i would go for it, they just tend to have less issues in general and r easier to troubleshoot. i don’t know much about steam deck but it seems pretty neat and def costs way less than a gaming laptop. also those games don’t seem all that intensive to run? the freezing probs isn’t a hardware issue.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

like i can def think of plenty of exceptions, but most games work great with an xbox or dualshock controller, and you can even get a dinky little controller for yr phone on ebay for like $12

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

its def not stupid, legit sources are super inconvenient, like i forget account passwords all the time, and steam makes sharing yr games for multiplayer really hard. way easier to just go download a cracked copy

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

the gaming space has changed a lot! there is more money pumped into it than ever before and little room for experimention in AAA titles. but the indie scene is enormous now and there are still tons of older mainstream games to play. no need to play pointless time sinks.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

omg i had pretty much the same experience with TotK, not only were the maps huge but the animations and cutscenes took waaaaay too long.

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

i think Downwell meets your criteria, its pretty actiony but easy to put down

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

oh neat, i hope it has decent mouse controls

sludge,
@sludge@beehaw.org avatar

i’ve been playin Kid Icarus: Uprising, its really fun! i wish it was easier to control on emulator tho

Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard

https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/11/23779039/microsoft-activision-blizzard-ftc-trial-win

From the article, quoting Judge Corley:

... the Court finds the FTC has not shown a likelihood it will prevail on its claim this particular vertical merger in this specific industry may substantially lessen competition. To the contrary, the record evidence points to more consumer access to Call of Duty and other Activision content. The motion for a preliminary injunction is therefore DENIED.

“Because if you made it, it is yours and you get to decide how other people use it.” why shouldn’t people be allowed to use software how they want?

Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?

Just as with books, movies, plays etc the past holds a treasure trove of amazing experiences. Unless you have a lot more free time than I do it’s unlikely you’ve played anywhere near the majority of the classics. Let’s get out those pink sunnies and compare notes on some of our favourite releases....

Mischief Makers for n64! its a puzzle platformer by treasure, its controls are a little unintiutive at first, but the games grappling/boost mechanics are so much fun once you get it down.

also, SHAKE SHAKE!

Morrowind is a fantastic game even if its clunky by modern standards, def use OpenMW and a UESP guide tho.

Both Knights of the Old Republic games are great (the second is a lot better imo) if yr into star wars.

With Those we Love Alive is a surrealist hypertext game with an awesome creepy ambient soundtrack.

Should I play Dark Souls original or Remaster?

I already own the original, but back when I got it I was unable to play due to the poor control schemes since I am disabled. Now I own an Xbox Adaptive Controller that I used to play through Elden Ring pretty well. I'd love to go back and play some of the earlier games....

if you haven't checked it out yet there's the daggerfall unity port! ive played it a bit and didn't encounter any bugs ^_^

what's your favorite Gameboy game that isn't Pokemon or Mario?

I've just rediscovered my childhood Gameboys, I grew up in the 90s and had an original, a color, an advance and an sp. My game collection has whittled down over the year to the usual suspects, Pokemons, Zelda's, Mario's and some other standards. But I want to dive into some games that 7 year old me would have brushed over. So...

shantae for gbc! its a really cute sort of metroidvania thing.

Share Your Favorite Skyrim Mods

Skyrim gets some hate these days, since it was first released in 2011 and although Bethesda is supposedly working on Elder Scrolls VI, we've seen practically nothing of the game. However, you have to admit that Skyrim is still around for a reason: it's fun, especially if you mod it, and new mods get released all the time. Since...

I really love Beyond Skyrim: Bruma Its a bit of a demo release of the whole Beyond Skyrim project, but it has lots of new items, quests, dungeons, etc. Also some of the best voice acting i've seen from any mod.
