I liked 5 because a few large cities (going tall) was way more viable, which I prefer over making tons of little cities (going wide).

Reading through the above comments it seems like goalposts keep moving on what counts as a console. Does the wii u not count as a console because the controller had a screen and the price to performance is poor?

I’m not sure any of you have a concrete definition for a console, and maybe there isn’t one. It might be more of a spectrum with open and configurable devices on one end and the more focused devices with walled garden software on the other.

Then you can say that ps5 is more like a console than steam deck is, and steam deck is more like a console than a pc.

The person I was responding to was citing costs accrued for screen and battery as a reasoning for why steam deck is not a console, so I was giving an example (wii u) that contradicts that reasoning.

I don’t actually care if you consider the steam deck or wii u or anything is a console or not. My point was that I don’t see a concrete definition anywhere in this thread and that maybe a more nuanced view would be appropriate.

Ah, that does clarify a lot. You’re wanting a term to refer to the Xbox and Playstation class devices since they’re in this closely competing realm, but people already have a preconceived notion of what a “console” is (I would consider handheld to be consoles, for example).

It does seem like it would be useful to have a term for those.

If it’s a subcategory of console then it is a console. Otherwise it’s like saying a square is not a rectangle because it is a square, or a cat is not a mammal because it is a cat.

That’s why I say you are searching for a term for things like the Xbox and Playstation - because it would be useful to have a term for that. Simply “console” is not a good fit imo, but you may disagree.

Omg I was just complaining about this in another thread. I wish it hadn’t taken them so long, but I’m stoked it’s happening!

I really wanted to love rain world since it seemed right up my alley. I bounced off it not because of the difficulty, but I think because the character’s movement feels bad. You’re slow, can’t jump high, a lot of maneuvering is fiddly.

Maybe I’ll try it again at some point though, because the world they made is brilliant and has interesting emergent behaviors.

I really like steam for its friends network and local streaming, but these are the reasons I occasionally buy on gog:

Games that my wife likes to play so that they don’t tie up my steam account. I still find it weird that ALL games in steam get locked down when one is running. I understand it keeping the same game from being run more than once simultaneously, but more than that is unnecessary.

I also buy games on gog (when available) that I mod a lot, because it’s really easy to stop updates on gog (updates often break mods).

I do know about that, but I want it to be as easy as clicking on a game to play it without worrying about toggling the mode. I know I could make a separate account for her too, but we share machines and again that becomes a barrier when wanting to just click a game to play it.

In this niche case, gog is just plain better.

That is a cool feature, and I do use it though in a different way. I made an alt account that I buy vr games on so that I can share them with friends. That way if a friend is playing one of my vr games through family share, it won’t lock up all the games in my main account.

In the example you’re talking about, say your SO is playing a game shared from your account - it locks up all the games in both accounts! Pretty annoying if you want to play a game, now.

But if it’s a gog game, there’s no issue at all.
