what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it’s a gacha. I don’t want to gamble with my account being banned, so I’m keeping windows for it specifically.) this’ll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues...

I’m running Pop!_OS. I tried Mint and EndeavorOS. I found that I don’t like vanilla gnome, and while I appreciate KDE, it’s too Windows-like. Which is contrary to what I’m trying to do by switching to Linux in the first place. So Pop is perfect for me.

What a garbage take. Use what you want, homie.

Any good email service except tutamail and proton ?

I am now using disroot . I don’t care about anonymity or anything as I just wanna use it to connect to my bank, ID and buy/book shit etc. Which all have my phone number, address, name etc anyway so no point in that . I just want the security privacy to be good enough that no one can easily hack it, steal my OTP, inbox etc and...

Recent convert myself. And now that I’ve experienced mail, calendar, notes, and file storage all in the same app (android, at least) I can’t go back to separate apps.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I’d love to try it out but only self-hosted. And so far I can’t get it spun up. To be clear, I’m sure that’s a me problem. That said, the instructions are pretty spartan and a few commands to run and “that’s it. you can now create an account and login!” but that doesn’t work for me.

I currently have Immich running and it’s good. But I’ve had two updates break my install, requiring hours of work to get it back to working reliably. They have a disclaimer that this can happen and isn’t ready for production yet, so I don’t fault them for that. I’m just on the hunt for something more reliable. Ente seems like it’s been around a good while. I just need to figure out what I’m doing wrong. The S3 backend is a pretty great feature, imo.

Damn, that’s a great price. Who is your VPS provider so I can keep an eye out for similar deals?

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve heard good things. I will admit I don’t like hiding features that I would consider to be essential behind a paywall. But I may have to give it another try.

Launcher with specific features

I finally gave up on Nova Launcher after watching the various “calls home” its doing now after the acquisition by analytics company Branch. I held out for probably way too long considering the way things were inevitably going to go. I’ve tried Kvaesitso, KISS, and Neo Launcher so far. There are a couple of features I...

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I haven’t. I will try it out, thanks!

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Sticking with Nova with network access denied for the time being. Also turned off updates in the Play Store. I’m still open to new ones, but apparently I’m very picky when it comes to launchers.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m using Netguard. You can block specific apps without requiring root access.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Actually I’m not sure. I will investigate for sure though!

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Ok, I like this idea. Handn’t thought of doing a single library we all log into. That certainly could make things easier since I already have the server up and running.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I really like it. I tried several distros for my first dedicated desktop Linux machine and pop was the one that clicked. I like that it’s not trying to mimick windows UI, and only sorta behaves like macOS. Everyone else was too close to win10. Which I understand is a selling point, so to speak, but I’m so sick of windows that I wanted it to look and act differently.

Multifunction Laser Printer and Linux

My faithful Brother laser printer just poo’d itself. And since I’ve not purchased a new printer with additional features since I switched to full-time Linux, I thought I’d better ask around to make sure the document scanning, copy, fax (maybe once a year if that), and other features will work correctly....

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I would normally agree but then I saw how cool Paperless-NGX is and had a mighty need to self host and get organized. Or at least that’s how I’m justifying it to myself…

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn’t always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

Obsidian. Plain text files with as many or as few plugins as you want. All versions of the app look and behave the same (other than mobile, but at least android is kinda close). Nothing stored in a database file, no manipulation of the text files themselves (looking at you, Joplin). I’m open to another option but so far, nothing is as elegant and platform agnostic as Obsidian.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I tried both. Proton email client on Android at least was awful. Super sluggish to navigate. In fact I have a chunk of credit with them because I cancelled too late to get a refund. No idea what I’m going to do with that. I already have a VPN and a Pwd manager…

Fastmail has been snappy and I like that the app has a notes section for quick jotting of ideas. I also like that Rclone can attach directly to Fastmail files. They just recently added Proton Drive support too though.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I did hear about that. But haven’t tried it yet. I’ll check it out, thanks!

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

It does seem snappier. But damn, I’ve come to love Fastmail’s all-in-one app. Having calendar, notes, contacts and files all in the email app is something I didn’t realize I’d care about but not sure I can do without now.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That and not being shown ads in my damn inbox is what lead me to the hunt for a better provider than Gmail. Another I just remembered about Proton that I didn’t care for (and there may be a way to opt out) is the amount of promotional notifications/emails I’d get for their other services. Not as bad as NordVPN, but then again I don’t think anyone is as bad as them regarding self-promotion. I’m happy to pay for a service if it means retaining some more privacy but mostly get rid of ads but the constant need to upsell was getting to me.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That makes sense, I’ll have to try that. It would be a silhouette of said chicken. Thanks!

I suppose you’re right. But I’ve got this neat tablet here and I wanna use it! That and I want to do this on multiple projects, not just this example.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

That looks promising! Thank you.

Father_Redbeard, (edited )
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

See? This is why I asked. I figured if nothing else, someone would have a better idea than what I’ve been trying! That totally works! I’ll have to try it more to see if it can do what I want. Thanks!

EDIT: yep, this idea works!

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

So your vote is “no”? Got it.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah Kijiji was the other app I was trying to think of. These are good points. It really is frustrating that so many have migrated to using Marketplace instead of the alternatives.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Excellent points. I haven’t tried it yet, but the app Hermit has sandboxing as well and creates PWA-type apps out of websites. I’ve been using it for self hosted services that don’t have and Android app component to them. Works reasonably well but I’m not trying to hide info…from myself :)

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

There are, I’ll have to ask around to see if anyone can help with this kind of project.

I will be very careful. If I don’t feel confident I won’t even try it and I’ll just use composite.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Ooh, nice resource, thank you. I do have a brass sponge on hand. It was also recommended to me by a friend.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I do have some old components laying around I could mess around with to build soldering skills. It’s all PC hardware though, so likely much smaller than the TV components. Though I do have an alarm clock from the 80s that barely works. That might be closer as far as size of components. Might have to crack that open.

Halls Of Torment. It’s a simple game on the surface, but has some surprising depth I wasn’t expecting that I like. Plus when you do a completely broken build and your frame rate drops because of all the damage your causing to the entire screen, it makes me laugh.

Plus killing the skeletons makes the most satisfying crunchy sound. Similar satisfaction to Vampire Survivors when you have enough garlic to “pop” enemies by walking into them.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t mind them. I like to hear what drove people away from Windows and into Linux’ loving embrace. I’m still pretty new myself, so grain of salt I suppose.

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Any DE that looks remotely like Windows. My journey to Linux began with a seething hatred of the way Microsoft does pretty much anything. Including the Win10 UI. So when I jumped ship I wanted something completely different. I tried Gnome on a couple distros but ultimately landed on Pop!_OS and really like it!

Is it possible to use Google Drive reliably?

I’ve been using Google Drive in Windows for about a decade and have a good workflow. I recently transitioned to Linux but cannot seem to reliably connect my drive to the filesystem. My work provides unlimited Drive space and since it’s for work I have shared directories with coworkers that I need access to every day. Hence,...

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Came here to say the same. Works pretty damn well too. I also have mine connected to a Nextcloud sever because I’m trying to ditch the big G

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Obsidian for sure. Look at the Excalidraw plugin for handwriting/drawing. It’s quite good.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

The app is not. That said, since it’s literally a front end for markdown files, the file format is universal and can be opened on anything with a text editor. No conversion or export needed.

I know some folks won’t use it if it’s not FOSS, and I respect that decision. For me there isn’t an open source alternative that is as good. Joplin stores your data in an SQL file, that’s a deal breaker for me. Logseq seems to be so outline/task oriented that I’ve not been able to use it the way I want to.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

It feels like they’re literally only there as a front for micro transactions, so I don’t bother. I did try a few of the Netflix games since those are ad free, but still… Nothing seems to hold my interest.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Vampire Survivor. So cheap but fun to jump in for a run or six.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

Not FOSS but I see so many YouTubers that DM talk about Obsidian for notes. I use it and love it myself, just not for DnD stuff.

Logseq and Joplin are FOSS and are often brought up. Joplins android app is garbage, if that matters to you.

Acreom isn’t FOSS yet, but it’s on the roadmap and I liked that one.

Notesnook is FOSS but has some features behind a paywall that might be deal breakers for some folks.

Father_Redbeard,
@Father_Redbeard@lemmy.ml avatar

I guess my point is that in your example, Joplin is the same. The feature hidden behind a paywall is for them to host the sync function for you. Both Joplin and Obsidian offer that. Yet you can roll your own method using Syncthing, Nextcloud, etc for either of them. If it’s FOSS or not that’s a deal breaker, I get it. I gave Obsidian a pass in that regard since the file format is so wide open and universal.

You may want to keep an eye out on these two as well. Both are missing some features now, but have them on their roadmap:

Acreom

  • not open source yet, but planned
  • no E2EE, but planned
  • can’t self host the mobile app side of things, but the desktop versions work without an account and use markdown file format like Obsidian (and others)

Notesnook

  • Open source
  • E2EE
  • Can’t self host yet, but on the roadmap. The dev confirmed to me that there would be no fee tacked on for self hosters once released, something that either Standard Notes or Simple Note does (can’t remember which).
