Congress can’t override executive privilege arbitrarily (or even at all,)

It’s there to keep presidents from being meddled with by congress in exactly this manner, and charging executive officials who comply with executive privilege is contemptuous, and an attempt to weaponized the DOJ.

Executive privilege goes to the current sitting president, so Trump stopped hanging it the moment he was no longer president…

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Executive privilege exists specifically to prevent congress from using its subpoenas powers excessively and interfering with the business of the executive branch doing its job. The, uh, co-equal, executive branch.

for example by subpoenas for extremely sensitive testimony by a sitting president specifically so it can harvest damaging sound bites to use in their election campaign.

Such a use would unduly chill the ability of the DOJ to interview witnesses and subjects in an investigation and expect candid cooperation.

When a POTUS invokes executive privilege, it goes to the courts to decide. Not congress. It is difficult to believe there is a legitimate need for crafting legislation, however, since they already have transcripts of the testimony. They don’t need the audio recordings.

And/or “I know you are, but what am I?”

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

somebody should create a truth bot or whatever it’s called and everytime he insults some one or soemthing, it just says “I know you are but what am I?” or maybe “You’re an orange [whatever he just said]”

You know. maybe keep him so irate and busy he forgets all about this presidential campaign thing.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I think you just aged both of us…

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I like it. Bots for everyone.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

What? And take away the ability to piss on people?

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

WTF?!

hand this guy a shovel and he just digs himself deeper. Last I checked, Cuomo was still alive, was never actually tortured and just ousted for sexual misconduct allegations. Ooops. Emmit Till was abducted, tortured, and lynched over accusations that he offended a white woman… who he probably never even talked to. to add insult to injury, the FBI report took until 2006, when he was lynched in 1955.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

yes it was

You’re surprised that Hilary “SuperCriminals” Clinton endorsed this guy?

Edit: SuperCriminals could be an awesome name for a anti-hero action flick. I;'m thinking it’s the name of a 90’s era cover band… the band is a cover for our erstwhile vilians who target corporations and turn into folk heroes, or something. I dunno. there’s a reason they don’t pay me to come up with this shit.

@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

For the record, the dark ages weren’t all that dark.

This is more like the Bronze Age collapse, only faster.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If that even is the thinking. IDK, maybe they are just doing exercises, and there’s no particular intent behind it and the US press is writing a bunch about it just because it is notable that it’s happening.

It’s brinkmanship. the Russians are trying to invoke the cuban missile crisis. AFAIK, they’re supply ships bringing stuff to Cuba; (but also “recruits” from Cuba.). But a large part of it is definitely meant to up the anty on all the “if you don’t stop supplying weapons I’ll use nukes” rhetoric.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

You’re not wrong. At some point Putin is gonna have to grab the other guy and jump off that ledge, just to prove he would.

Which is the problem with brinksmanship.

@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Time to become Burek Queen and get that crown back.

How Donald Trump's criminal conviction boosted his campaign fundraising machine (www.cnbc.com)

"Since he left the White House in 2020, Trump has taken advantage of a little-known loophole in campaign finance law to pay for his mounting legal costs, which Federal Election Commission filings show amount to around $90,000 per day over the past three years.”...

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I once asked my brain-rotted, antivax, “Trump is the second coming”, “I’m honest hand guy”* uncle how big a simp you have to be, to pay a billionaire’s legal fees. When he was out visiting my parents.

He stopped talking talking to me- Actively avoided me, and never brought up politics again.

(* he acts like he’s some important dude, that he talks with Trump and leads his campaign from his home state. He knocked on some doors and got shot at. Trump doesn’t know he exists and doesn’t care either.)

Did you copy-pasta this from a comment in 2020?

seems her understanding can be bought with 2.6 million US dollars.

she should probably go gaslight somebody else. We’re tired of boomers gaslighting us. “Whah you don’t understand!!!”

no. we do.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

So. if Biden doesn’t get executive priviledge… as a sitting president… does that mean Trump doesn’t get it… as a former president?

who am I kidding, they don’t care about the hypocrisy.

my dad was a UNIX sysadmin. His assertion- at the time- that we’d be fine, did not live up the vast amounts of overtime he put in in during '99.

(To be clear it was never the then-modern systems, like windows ME, or '95 that were at problem. it was all the old-as fuck stuff… every major institution still uses. Like IRS’s COBOL database… that’s… still being…used.all of that stuff, they needed to patch to make it okay.)

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

he just retired this year!

(so… uh… what happens in 2038?) (edit… I’ll worry about 2038 if we actually get to 2030.)

Israel Has Carried Out 464 Attacks on Gaza’s Health Care System Since October 7 (truthout.org)

More than eight months into Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza, the territory’s healthcare system is barely functioning, with the World Health Organization reporting this week that there have been 464 Israeli attacks on Gaza’s healthcare system since October 7, affecting 101 health facilities....

If he’s not on the list, it’s because he was omitted. Friendship or maybe just a really good patron.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yes, because the dems have an interest in this.

(They could have fixed it. They didn’t.)

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

When they had control of the house and senate. You remember all the whole “we could pack the court by expanding the seats” thing?

They didn’t in part because of manchin and sinema being doucheburgers, but Biden was vocally opposed to it as well.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

They didn’t have the majority? that’s interesting. Then why the fuck was Schumer the majority leader of the 117th congress? (Specifically Jan 3rd ‘21 through ja. 3rd 2023.)

Oh. That’s right they had control.

As for the filibuster…. they could have just gotten rid of it with the numbers they had.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

You didn’t see the part in my original comment where I recognized their obstinacy?

Or the part where Biden was opposed to packing the courts anyhow?

Why was Trump talking about sharks at a campaign event? (www.usatoday.com)

“It must be because of M.I.T., my relationship with M.I.T., very smart. I say, 'What would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater, and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?” Trump said. “By...

If trump were tossed in a pool with starving sharks, they’d toss him back and demand real food.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Of course we can’t compromise.

Which kinda puts alito on the wrong side of history, doesn’t. Since he’s the one compromising the shit out of the courts…

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

But then the pivot: “Or no, let’s say, they didn’t say that I spent the funds on strippers,” White clarified. “They sell food at a strip club, don’t they”

Riiiight. And I suppose he has a playboy subscription for the articles….

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Couldn’t follow mine even if he wanted to.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Not even sure what he was trying to say?

D-day was a failure of appeasement?

D-day was why appeasement failed?

Too many lives were lost on d day to call it “a victory”?

That we should totally go all in on supporting Ukraine? Even with troops?

That Putin’s invasion isn’t about nato? Or that we should leave nato because it’s leading to war?

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

The reason the “far right” is gaining momentum around the world because of immigration issues. It has nothing to do with “racism” and “bigotry”,

That’s… were you trying to be ironic? As mentioned elsewhere it’s xenophobia, which is almost certainly rooted in racism and bigotry.

The entire idea that we should “help ourselves” and not help “others” is racist.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not.

At least, not here. And it would still be bigotry regardless.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

He was probably paying attention to dicks in the shower scene

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

It was a mixed gender shower.

They may have been artfully concealed, but yes. Everyone there was neked.

Not that there’s anything wrong with checking out the dicks. There might be something wrong with being a raging homophobe, though, and still checking out said dicks. It that sounds like a personal problem

Remarks by President Biden on Securing Our Border (www.whitehouse.gov)

Four months ago, after weeks of intense negotiation between my staff and Democrats and Republicans, we came to a clear — clear bipartisan deal that was the strongest border security agreement in decades. But then Republicans in Congress — not all, but — walked away from it. Why? Because Donald Trump told them to. He told...

Long term it’s an awful idea, for the DNC

It’ll put the DNC in competition for the conservative votes, while leaving progressives free to form a legitimate party that’s actually progressive.

For the short term, it means the republicans are just going to further into fascism while the dnc progresses to fascist lite (exactly where the repugnants used to be.)

The only hope is if one or the other parties fails and/or progressives to finally figure out that “lesser of two evils” is exactly how we got here in the first place

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Short therm, you’re very right- long term, 2+ decades, if the dems keep shifting right, it’ll happen on its own.

Democrats and republicans are not the first political parties in the US. They probably won’t be the last.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

20 years from now, they won’t remember this specific act. But it doesn’t change the shift, and people will remember the broad strokes.

Not sure how that’s a far cry. Short term, democrats are going fascist lite as republicans are full on embracing fascism.

Progressives (and the centrists being passed by,) are either going to continue voting for the lesser evil (which is increasingly fascist…) or they’re going to find other answers.

This is just my prediction.
