Remarks by President Biden on Securing Our Border (www.whitehouse.gov)

Four months ago, after weeks of intense negotiation between my staff and Democrats and Republicans, we came to a clear — clear bipartisan deal that was the strongest border security agreement in decades. But then Republicans in Congress — not all, but — walked away from it. Why? Because Donald Trump told them to. He told...

@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

He is going to the right though, and a clear issue here is that many independents are actually on the left of. democrats. We’re not a cohesive group or a “party”.

And he is fucking over the border. We know what we need to solve it- increased funding for more clerks/judges/legal aid

But that’s not funding for their salary raises/expenses, or the corporate/billionaire mega donors subsidies and tax breaks. So fuck even trying that.

Blinken to push cease-fire proposal in eighth urgent Mideast trip since war in Gaza erupted (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken will push for a breakthrough on President Joe Biden’s cease-fire proposal when he returns to the Middle East next week on his eighth diplomatic mission to the region since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began in October, the State Department said Friday....

Israel rescues 4 hostages taken in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, and 210 Palestinians are reported killed (apnews.com)

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel on Saturday carried out its largest hostage rescue operation since the latest war with Hamas began, taking four to safety out of central Gaza amid the military’s heavy air and ground assault. At least 210 dead Palestinians, including children, were brought to local hospitals, a health...

“Today, the Court became aware of a comment that was posted on the Unified Court System’s public Facebook page and which I now bring to your attention,” Judge Juan Merchan wrote in a letter dated Friday.

“My cousin is a juror and said Trump is getting convicted,” the post stated, according to Merchan’s letter. “Thank you folks for all your hard work!!!”

Merchan said that the comment, which was attributed to a user identified as Michael Anderson, was “now labeled as one week old,” and was posted in response to a routine notice from the court posted on May 29 about oral arguments unrelated to proceedings in Trump’s case.

for anyone wondering what the comment was. elsewhere, I’ve read that the account is a common troll of the NY court system, so, probably not even an accurate statement- quite probably a nothing-hamberder.

I’m with Nougat. He’s about to become very familiar with other people’s shit. One might even say intimately familiar.

I’m not sure on the specifics, but if it could be proven that he interfered in the proceedings of a criminal trial? yeah. there’s a charge there.

Republican Operatives Swoop in to Help Cornel West This Election (newrepublic.com)

”This helps take away votes from Joe Biden,” the activist told one person at the rally, according to a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) by a Washington Post reporter. “We’re helping the Trump team who’s trying to get him on there,” added a woman by his side.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Does any progressive actually like West?

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Good question. I think a large part of the problem is there’s not a lot of progressive candidates getting out of the state level. Without party endorsements, it’s hard to get to any kind of national recognition sufficient to be a candidate.

and lets be honest, the DNC has actively been squashing any attempt at developing candidates who aren’t kowtowing to the status quo. even just being not-a-boomer is enough to make it hard.

Several of the people I’ve personally liked and thought were progressives turned out to be assholes.

I like Bernie. Warren. I can name a few others, but really don’t know enough about them to say if I like them or not. and that’s a large part of the problem. Even if we ignore the progressive label… outside of a small handful of people, nobody really has the name recognition. and at this point I assume that’s intentional to keep candidates like Biden and Hilary… relevant.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

You’ll note I said ‘like’ in favor of ‘vote’… Obviously we need to be voting to defeat trump, and I doubt any credible progressive is going to be not recognizing that.

but can I ask who, if that wasn’t an issue, would you like? Or maybe better way of saying it. If we had ranked choice or similar voting system… who’d be your first pick?

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

They didnt just screw Bernie. They screwed America

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

possibly that kind too.

(CocaCola is the largest importer of cocaine products to the US. Specifically the leaves… )

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Mandate ethics standards, add in term limits.

I like the idea of a scheduled rotation. Let’s say, every two years, or mid year to give presidents time to get the hearings out.

Senate must begin immediate and expeditious proceedings for confirmation.

Finally, and most importantly, their robes must be tie dye.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If we replace a scotus judge every 2 years, they would individually have 18 year terms.

If we assume they’re experienced enough to actually be on the SC, they’ll be pretty close to retirement age anyhow. (If they’re 40, and that’s young, they’ll be 58 when they’re done.)

This doesn’t really change the slow nature of the court. What it does, is to remove unpredictable nature of appointments. Right now, we have a hyper conservative judge because McConnel played games and certain judges died at very inconvenient times. A consequence there is a SCOTUS that doesn’t reflect America at large.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I can give them something to be mad about.

(what flavor would you like? Universal voting rights; and removing the ability of asshats to gerrymander shit? universal health care? No more funding for Israel for as long as they remain an aparthied state? broad anti-corruption measures…? Congressional term limits? Locking up Trump?)

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Or just calls themselves Charlemagne, really.

Not exactly a nice guy, what with all the warmongering and forced conversion to Christianity. (Though it should be noted several social reforms including education helped spark the carolingan renaissance)

They’re probably not allowed to adopt. Which is good, because I wouldn’t want to put kids into that lunacy.

Ma Laeng Tod (Thai street food- fried insects,) is delicious. The grub were like spicy-savory gummy bears.

As some one who’s perhaps too adventurous for their own good (I’ll eat almost anything, once.)… I find this whole idea that it’s going to be forced patently ludicrous. Even if there was a push towards it.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, not knowing what’s in spam is why I don’t eat spam.

I’d rather crunch out on a grasshopper (or cricket, grub… those aren’t crunchy, though,) than eat spam

(I spent some time in Thailand and have had ma laeng tod. The, street food you mentioned)

they had a plea deal that… politics intruded on… causing Hunter to decide to change his plea

Basically, this is the kind of charge that sees almost no major consequences for and is usually plead out to something like probation or a fine, but partisan hacks decided to try and make a name for themselves.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

And they had a plea deal in place. That got upended when said political hacks decided to make a name for themselves and change it.

It was (mostly) apolitical, and then it became a thing. The current prosecution is entirely political.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

Naw. What’s shocking is that this is a yes/no headline that’s answered with “yes”

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

But don’t count Hunter short, if he was running today it could be the exact same campaign as Joe and people would use all the same talking points to support Hunter.

Saber rattling.

the only reason this is scary is that at some point some idiot is going to call putin on it, and then everyone’s gonna have to get involved.

Growing up, one thing I learned about dog piles? it sucks being the one on the bottom, and there ain’t no football in war.

So. Anyway… BOMB THEM HARDER!

or sanction them harder. Whatever.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

That’s interesting. Care to explain?

I propose a hypothetical- that we all ignore a guy. The only assumption that I’m making is whatever his purpose is, it requires engagement.

If nobody engages, that account at least, goes away. Either R2O is here to troll, or to push a narrative or is in some other way a bad actor. All of that requires engagement.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

please don’t take this as me trolling. But…

Because of that, there’s no point in indulging in the rest of your thought experiment.

Well then. You’re free to indulge in the block button. Cuz that’s exactly what it’s there for.

Further, it doesn’t take a lot of people blocking him to remove the value in posting. there’s a diminished return the less engagement he gets. Unless he’s just a bot spamming shit everywhere, somebody is behind that account and is wasting time and energy on it. They’re going to find something else, somewhere else, or some other way, to spread their crap when they stop getting sufficient engagement.

I blocked him simply because I found myself recognizing his name and scrolling past. at that point, it’s just simpler to actually block a person.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

shit. I forgot about that.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

you can always come hang your sign on our side. it’ll be well hanged.

(sorry. Couldn’t resist.)

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

It rather is a huge no-no.

First, firearms carried for protection are far more likely to harm the household of the person carrying it (or keeping it in the house) than they are to harm an intruder.

Secondly, fighting near the client or whoever is being protected is like the single biggest fuck up they can make. If trump were to turn and try and fight, that just gives the attackers more opportunity to put a bullet in him (and probably get way more people dead.

No… somebody attacks him, they’re grabbing his neck, and getting him the fuck out of there and into a fortress.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

I once had my fingers up a through-and-through because the dumbass shot himself with one.

Went through his thigh and nicked his femoral artery.

Two things- “hey buddy this is gonna hurt” is a stupid thing to say, and it’s okay cuz he wasn’t really paying attention anyhow.

FuglyDuck,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

For the record, it’s also a federal offense for him to have a firearm.

In fact, it was illegal simply handing his indicted ass that trump-branded 1911 in the gun store

You’ll notice no court made an issue of that

Edit: the pic has already been posted here,. That is an ugly ass 1911.

And now it’s his job to make sure people don’t do what, uh, he did.
