RBWells,

Our Kimchi is working so hard on this and I don’t usually think of her as clever. She knows the knob opens the door so she bats at it, hangs on it.

Neither cat has been messing with the toilet paper lately though.

RBWells,

And if the therapy aligns with their physical gender? No treatment for a girl who goes through puberty too young? Nothing for a girl of 17 who is worried because she hadn’t started “developing” or gotten her period? Nothing for a boy who isn’t going through male puberty, or starts it at 5? Intersex kids who are mis-assigned at birth and panic as adolescents?

Yes the therapies are not without risk, but doing nothing is also not without risk. The only reason doctors will prescribe puberty blockers is if the kids are suffering, otherwise the “care” that is getting outlawed is counseling. I have a trans kid and the doctor prescribed counseling but they can’t get it because the clinics aren’t allowed to “treat” the transgendered now.

Colorado Republican Brutally Grilled By Local News Anchor: ‘Why Is Abortion Good For Your Girlfriend? Bad For Other Women?’ (www.mediaite.com)

Colorado congressional candidate and sitting State Rep. Richard Holtorf ® received a tough grilling this week at the hands of local 9News anchor Kyle Clark over his apparent hypocrisy when it comes to abortion rights....

RBWells,

These people drive me crazy. I never had an abortion because I think it’s creepy as fuck but I don’t think my experience should define everyone else’s, these men are evil. If a lady has to have an abortion, she has to. Nobody wants to, and they want to heap shame on top of that, but literally will NEVER have to make that choice because they are men. Fuck off.

RBWells,

You must not have dry hands. That step #3 should be:

Stand there rubbing on the bag with nothing happening, hand bag to husband or go over to the lettuce section and touch the ice then open the bag.

Most stuff I just toss in the cart with no plastic bag, but like to have a few for the refrigerator, they are useful.

  • RBWells,

At least be intentional about it. I buy personal care products and sometimes whole bottles are shrink-wrapped, WTF? Others just have a better design so they can be shipped safely. Some vitamins/medicines have the caps with plastic wrap to show they haven’t been opened but also the plastic and foil inside. Why can’t I bring back my medicine bottle and have them use the same one, or just give me the medicine in a paper envelope and I can fill the bottle, I don’t NEED another bottle!

I don’t know about ALL but there are a lot that could be eliminated without any impact on anyone except maybe the people who make the plastic.

    RBWells,

I do indeed most ardently hate. Begone!

    RBWells,

No, a correlation between being black and being arrested for weed. In my city, they made the legal status of the drug indeterminate and gave cops DISCRETION on whether to arrest or cite someone for having pot. Not a felony now in any event, misdemeanor or civil citation or nothing but how do you think this discretion will be used?

    RBWells,

Whole Foods has a great bakery. It was a loaf I bought there that inspired me to start making sourdough. Locally, we have “Cuban bread” that I’m pretty sure is really Tampa bread, if you get it at the right bakeries it’s great. Supermarket bread is mostly nonsense, is that not true elsewhere?

    RBWells,

Hope springs eternal in the hearts of women.

    RBWells,

Be strong and gay? Weak and straight? Moderately fit and bisexual? What exactly is she asking of her constituents?

    RBWells,

Yeah I looked up my family on the Mormon genealogy site and was surprised how many of the women married around 28-30 years old. Certainly not as teens and I really was surprised. Like, I as a modern woman had kids younger than a good chunk of my ancestresses.

    RBWells,

Because they don’t taste good and fermented mushrooms have an off-putting texture? I like the flavor of most edible mushrooms but the psylosibe are not tasty.

Microdosing is something I’d really like to try though, it probably WOULD be a really nice energy drink, something that just opened you and woke you just a little not bash you over the head psychedelic.

Trumpism Is Emptying Churches: The former president’s embrace of White Christian militantism coincides with a precipitous decline in religious affiliation in the US (www.bloomberg.com)

Donald Trump, a 77-year-old Bible salesman from Palm Beach, Florida, has emerged as the nation’s most prominent Christian leader. Trump is running for president as a divinely chosen champion of White Christians, promising to sanctify their grievances, destroy their perceived enemies, bolster their social status, and grant them...

    RBWells,

What’s funny to me is my ex mother-out-law (mom of the long term ex I never married) told me recently she could not find a Christian church she agreed with. She said they are unchristian, so I asked “not welcoming to the poor and immigrants? Too focused on dogma and not the spirit of Christ? Prosperity Gospel nonsense?”.

No, apparently the Christian churches were too “woke” for her. Too nice, not enough conservative politics in the sermons. Oh my goodness, but I think at least my questions landed.

So she may be part of this number of dis-churched people but not for the reasons we might hope.

    RBWells,

I’m sure we weren’t the first generation to question religion, I’m your age and my dad did, and there were hippies and beatniks and I’m sure some version of freethinkers before that. My mom used church more like a social group and I think we ARE missing that in society now. But agree it’s reached a critical mass now in my kids’ generation, their friends from school mostly are nonreligious, a few are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu but overwhelming majority just not religious.

    RBWells,

My second child had a friend Rose, who was the daughter of a lady Mary (of course) who was Catholic like nobody I have met before or since (and I say that as someone whose dad was excommunicated because his wife left him, half my family was Catholic.) She was really nice and a true believer to the point of being batshit crazy but so gentle with her dozen kids and they were great kids. She got them a birthday party only every 5 years, we got to go to one for Rose and it was huge, with literal ponies, but the gift her mom gave her was a song she wrote and sang for her. It was awesome. I don’t live in that world but will attest that some fundy Catholics are really nice people, religion does not spoil them, and they don’t try to convert you.

Also when the photographer was going to take a picture of all the kids she said, I quote, “Say Jesus!”

    RBWells,

This turn to the hard right is a recent thing. America is not sending us their best. I grew up with Walkin’ Lawton Childs, Askew and Graham did good things for the state before him, it was a mix of everyone and still is where I am. So eventually maybe Florida works it’s way into these people’s kids and we go back to purple.

But this year? Next year? I don’t have much hope for that. Thought we couldn’t do worse than Rick Scott, what a piece of work shyster he is, literal criminal who defrauded the government working now in government. DeSantis has him beat I think in actual harm to the people of the state, though.

    RBWells,

Material weakness means you failed the audit, and the firm will not state that the financial disclosures can be relied on.

    RBWells,

Gen X will be retiring never. I’m older genX and nope. It’s true we are close to the age our parents did (well, not my parents actually, dad died in his 50s and Mom worked till mid 70s) but no, the “wealth transfer” will skip us, we will just work, barring disability, straight through. I take my PTO, work out, and try to move through life at a sustainable pace in general.

    RBWells,

Beans and rice. (Red beans and rice, black beans and rice, garbanzo beans in curry on rice, you can make probably a hundred delicious variations on beans and rice)

A can of pureed pumpkin and a can of white beans with seasoning and a little chicken broth, heated and blended, makes a healthy and delicious soup.

A can of tomatoes, an onion, a couple dried Chiles and a can of pinto beans also makes an incredible pureed soup.

Up until recently I’d have said eggs and toast, but eggs are expensive lately. Still probably under $5 to feed 4 though.

We bought a frozen turkey cheap after Christmas and my God that made so many meals, I still have 3 quarts of stock too.

I don’t think a frozen pizza is a good deal in terms of nutrition but we do sometimes have that or the Little Caesars one if I can’t cook that night.

None of us are fat, husband is overweight but fit, and the rest of us are on the thin side.

    RBWells,

Trees don’t need to be watered here after they are established, nor do they need fertilizer (and we aren’t really supposed to use much fertilizer here because it gets washed into the bay). I went to the tree giveaway last year and they had people height (5-6 foot) trees of several varieties, nothing exotic or invasive. You had to sign up ahead of time. We got 2 red maples and advice on how to plant them, and had to give details in the sign up on our address and where they would go (backyard, front yard, side). It’s a great program, but the old old trees keep getting cut down for construction. Apparently it’s pretty easy to get permission even though they are supposed to be protected Grand Oaks.

    RBWells,

I do have always gaming dice, a Rubik’s Cube and a crow whistle; but miss the purse I had in high school that seemed to always have exactly what was needed at any given time. If someone needed a screwdriver, I’d have accidentally left one in my purse, really anything anyone asked for that was purse sized would always be there that day. One time I had a chicken sandwich when someone said they were hungry, even though I didn’t usually put food in there. It was the most useful purse ever and I’ve never had another magic one.

    RBWells,

    My kids say:

    Birth to 30 is young.

    31-60 is middle aged.

    Over 60 is old.

    Over 90 is fucking old.

People are aging more slowly than they did in the past, better information about health now. Look up 55 year old celebrities. These are certainly middle aged people, they aren’t young, and most don’t look old either. That is how I would define middle age and it’s getting longer. You can’t get old at 40, you will be old too long.

    RBWells,

Making yourself safer by making everyone else less safe still seems like an asshole move to me?

Bumper height should have been regulated on city roads, then we wouldn’t have gotten this escalation. Work truck, sure. If you need one, you need one. But people who drive a massive gas guzzler to park it at the office and go up the elevator to work?
