What Columbia Should Have Done Instead of Brutalizing Its Student Protesters (slate.com)

Sounds like people should be protesting for electoral reform so they can vote for the candidate that represents them best, while still counting their vote against the republicans.

"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods of direct action;” who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a “more convenient season.”

Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

Ultragigagigantic,
@Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world avatar

With a more representative electoral system like Ranked Choice, more people would have been driven to the polls. More people voting equals more democratic votes.

How we vote is controlled at the state level, so why haven’t blue states passed electoral reform? Don’t the democrats want more votes? Why would the democratic party say no to these extra votes?

Is keeping 3rd parties from joining the table worth sacrificing the nation to the Republican’s nightmare?

Reforms don’t prevent end stage capitalism, they only delay it. It looks as though there isn’t enough willpower for another delay.

Early 20th century labor movements should not have negotiated with the 1% financial terrorists. It’s as though we made peace with Russia, only a small respite in the class war while the 1% grew stronger then ever before.

Typically, when someone asserts “both sides are the same,” it’s often from a Democratic-leaning conservative perspective, seeking to discredit critics of the Democratic Party. While acknowledging similarities between these 2 capitalist parties, there are significant distinctions. Encouraging a broader range of viewpoints would be more beneficial. Instead of just criticizing, inviting dissenting voices to participate actively and propose solutions would be more productive. Shifting away from first-past-the-post voting enables more accurate representation and minimizes the spoiler effect, a reform already implemented at the state level in Maine and Alaska. However, Republicans are opposing alternative electoral systems. Rather than continuing to use voting methods favored by Republicans, embracing multiple political parties ensures wider representation and engagement, benefiting citizens and the Democratic Party alike. Enhanced voter participation leads to more democratic outcomes. So, what prevents Democratic-led states from prioritizing electoral reform? Let’s take action and advocate for change within our states to ensure better representation and competition among candidates, striving for genuine representation without excuses.

Ultragigagigantic,

Democracy is when you vote for my candidates.

Alternative electoral systems exist. You can’t wish them away like the Republicans think they can. We will always be undemocratic with a First past the post voting system. It wouldn’t even matter if the Republicans vanished into thin air. We need more then two parties to vote for, secure in the knowledge that our vote would still count if our preference didn’t win.

and we can make it happen. We have the power.

Who cares about a privately owned platform? It was never ours.

Spending time there was always going to be a waste of time. Every business wants to grow like a cancer to consume us all. The next service that you use will want the same if you use another private platform.

You should consider using something that is open source and self hosted. Peertube right? Anyone got other recommendations?

Ultragigagigantic,
@Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like the public library system should host the peoples videos as a service, not for profit.

Ultragigagigantic,
@Ultragigagigantic@lemmy.world avatar

Good point, i never thought about that angle. Looks like the only option is self hosting then.

Uncommitted voters are not apathetic. The Democratic party is (www.theguardian.com)

What happens in November is up to Biden – it will not be the fault of the protest voter if Trump is elected. The questions remain: does the Democratic party fear Trump as much as we do? And does it value its voters enough to shift away from an approach to the onslaught in Gaza that a majority of Democratic voters are against?

Screw the prohibitionists.

There will come a moment when humanity triumphs over the war on drugs, granting individuals the autonomy to decide what substances they consume.

And when that day arrives… will you witness drug users discriminating against those who choose sobriety?

Will you observe prisons constructed for those who opt to remain drug-free?

Will individuals be branded as criminals for abstaining from substances?

Will drug users advocate for the militarization of law enforcement and the erosion of our constitutional rights in an attempt to impose their lifestyle on others?

NO.

Who would inflict such harm on others? Prohibitionists.

And we stand against them.

Legalizing marijuana alone won’t address the most severe repercussions of the war on drugs.

Full legalization of all substances is the ultimate harm reduction strategy.

Most people desire peace in their life, and will suffer greatly to maintain it. But it’s getting harder for people to convince themselves that this is actually peace.
