Who is the IDF general who ordered tank fire on a kibbutz home with 13 hostages inside? (www.haaretz.com)

Until she was taken out of the house, Porat identified nine living hostages. She wasn’t a witness to the close-range shooting of any of the hostages, or to any of them being hit in the exchange of fire. “I didn’t see anyone execute anyone,” she says. “I didn’t see a body.” That is compatible with what Hadas Dagan...

With the most bigups going to Haaretz, quite honestly. It’s hard for non-Israeli outlets to do this kind of extensive investigative reporting from outside Israel. That much of the information used to debunk various bits of Israeli propaganda being parroted by Western media comes from original Haaretz reporting should not be ignored.

Cool. Will definitely be giving blendOS a spin in a VM.

Follow-up question: I’m in the US and the initial installation is taking forever. Pacman seems to be running at just 60-80 KiB/s when I normally get 5MiB/s. IS there a way to have the installer choose a local mirror before downloading all the packages?

aleph, (edited )
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Ok, thanks for the heads-up. I’m running it in a local VM and for some reason my host Arch system is significantly faster at downloading and installing packages than the blendOS guest. Not sure why, but just thought I’d mention it.

Edit: never mind, I messed up the first installation so had to do-over, and the slow download speed seems to have recovered this time.

Sedans were the default back in the 80s, now SUVs and pickups account for around 75% of all new sales (in the US, at least).

So, in terms of what the average car looked like then versus now, it’s a perfectly valid comparison.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

That’s not an average representation of the increase in the size of pickup trucks, though.

Just look at the Ford F150:

F150 in 70s versus today

Even if you compare like with like, pickups are around 30% heavier than they were in the 90s, and around 10-15% taller.

axios.com/…/pickup-trucks-f150-size-weight-safety

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

The Maverick is new and while it does buck the trend of “bigger is always better”, all it signifies to me is that Ford are diversifying their range of pickups now that they don’t make any small cars or sedans in the US any more, which is kind of emblematic of the whole problem.

They didn’t have crew cabs back then, which is kinda the point.

Edit: correction - they did, but it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that they became common.

Mastodon has a major engagement problem and I’m not sure why.

It has significantly more users than Lemmy but also manages to feel a lot less social, somehow.

Yeah, without evidence that Activision/CoD were intentionally in cahoots with arms manufacturers, this is pretty flimsy.

I do think the case against Daniel Defense is stronger, though. I can see a legitimate argument being made that guns should not be advertised directly at teenagers and young men, and that firearms shouldn’t be advertised on social media in general.

Saw the new movie today. It’s not as full of CGI as the trailer makes it look, but, granted, it’s more noticeable than it was in Fury Road. There are still some great practical stunts in it, though, it was still an enjoyable experience. 75% as good as FR, for me at least.

In the video, the CEO specifically claims that the device contains a proprietary AI that can do all sorts of things, when in fact it appears to be ChatGPT with a bunch of hard-coded scripts slapped on top. If that’s indeed the case, then it would be an obvious scam and most likely fraud.

Some questions about fedora

Hello. These questions are self-hosting related, but I feel they do partially belong here as they are also about fedora linux in general. I have a server which is currently running Debian. It has an arc GPU, and no matter what I do, video encoding refuses to work. I was thinking I might move it to Fedora, but have some questions...

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

I’ve personally had issues with Fedora’s version updates - once with Fedora and another with Nobara (which is Fedora based). In both cases, dependency conflicts broke the update and they were a considerable pain to fix. It was enough for me to switch to a rolling release distro and never look back.

I still wouldn’t call it “precise” in the slightest.

Even assuming that this ratio remains constant after the remaining 10,000 unidentified bodies are accounted for, men of fighting age only account for 40% of those being killed and not all of those will be actual Hamas fighters.

The future of desktop Linux might be like OpenSUSE Kalpa/Aeon

I’ve been running Tumbleweed for a few years now. It’s great, but it’s not 100% autopilot, updates often require manual intervention (resolving small problems) or updates try to add 50 packages I don’t need (recommends) all the time despite them not being in a pattern. I’ve been looking for a distro on which I could...

Is anyone using VMware under a Wayland host?

I’ve been using VMware Player (free version) for a while now and it’s been working fine. Recently I switched to Wayland and VMware’s grab input behavior broke. I’d say switch to gnome-boxes or virt-managerif possible - they don’t have this issue with Wayland and perform better than VMWare / Virtual Box anyway.

The secret to cooking good rice is to soak it in water (even 5 minutes will do) and then rinse it to remove the excess starch. Then add fresh water and cook it. Don’t take the lid off the pan so the steam cooks it properly. A rice cooker will simplify this process but all you really need is a pan with a lid.

Here’s my favorite quick and not-too-tricky recipe for beef chilli. It’s healthy, delicious, and can last you for days. The only equipment you need is a stove, a large pot, a ladle or spatula, and a can opener.

<span style="color:#323232;">1. Add 1 tbsp olive oil to pot, on medium heat
</span><span style="color:#323232;">2. Add 1/2 large white onion (chopped) and 1 bell pepper (chopped) and cook on medium heat for about four minutes (while stirring regularly).
</span><span style="color:#323232;">3. Add 3 cloves garlic (finely chopped) and 2 tbsp of tomato paste. Stir everything and cook for a couple of minutes.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">4. Add 2 lb of ground beef and cook until broken up and browned (about 7 minutes on med-high).
</span><span style="color:#323232;">5. Add 2 can of chopped tomatoes & 1 can of tomato sauce
</span><span style="color:#323232;">6. Add 1 can of black beans
</span><span style="color:#323232;">7. Add 1 can of pinto beans
</span><span style="color:#323232;">8. Add 1 can of kidney beans
</span><span style="color:#323232;">9. Season with 2 tbsp. chili powder.
</span><span style="color:#323232;">10. Season with 1 tbsp dried oregano
</span><span style="color:#323232;">11. Season with 2 tbsp ground cumin
</span><span style="color:#323232;">12. Season with 2 tbsp ground coriander
</span><span style="color:#323232;">13. Add salt, pepper, and (optional) Worcestershire sauce to taste
</span><span style="color:#323232;">14. Continue to simmer on low heat for 30 minutes, stirring thoroughly once every five minutes

*than the less restrictive states in the US.

What sets the US apart is how wildly the laws vary by state, with 10 states currently allowing no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother, i.e total, or near-total, bans.

In contrast, while many countries in Europe limit abortions to a point between 12 and 20 weeks, there are almost always exceptions and circumstances where an abortion can be granted medical approval.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

In that case, you are well within the majority of Americans. What’s odd is why Republicans appear hellbent on pushing extreme religious views into law when much of the country is against it.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Here’s a more recent breakdown.

www.cnn.com/us/…/index.html

You’re right in that many of the states where abortion is banned supposedly allow exceptions when the life of the mother is at risk, but in real terms that often translates to healthcare providers being too scared to carry out the procedure, or leaving it too late, for fear of legal repercussions.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Yup, same here. I’ve also used it to write shell scripts and figure out unique ways to configure my system that I would have been hard pushed to achieve via a web search. It’s incredibly useful.

Because a significant number of people still interact with the desktop via mouse rather than keyboard shortcuts.

Hell, I use hot keys for most things but I still often prefer to quickly minimize a window with the cursor instead of reaching across the keyboard. The first thing I do with a vanilla Gnome installation is get Tweaks on there and restore window buttons.

Is there any evidence that Hamas has taken new hostages since October 7th? Because AFAIK there isn’t.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

The temporal qualifier is inherent in the grammar of the statement. Perhaps you didn’t notice it?

In English, the present perfect continuous has/hasn’t been taking implies a frequent and repeated action since a fixed time in the past - in this case, presumably, the start of the current conflict until now.

Since Hamas only took civilian hostages on one occasion, i.e. October 7th, and not again since, it is not true to say that Hamas “has been taking hostages”. They took hostages. Once.

Israel, on the other hand, have been taking Palestinian civilians captive, repeatedly, since October 7th. That’s the difference.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

In that case, they would have used the present simple, “Hamas don’t take hostages”, but they didn’t.

I think you simply misunderstood the original statement.

Technically, Endeavour does have its own repos but they only contain a relatively small number of non-essential packages. But yeah, other than that it’s basically pre-configured Arch with great defaults.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

OP is clearly not that if their use case involves a homelab and docker containers. Arch is a perfectly valid suggestion here.

aleph, (edited )
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Exactly. It’s no surprise that someone running for president would try to handle the situation in this way. People expecting Biden to die on this hill by taking a moral stance don’t fully appreciate the power of the Pro-Israel lobby and how deeply it influences US policy in the Middle East.

Plus the fact that he has been staunchly in favor of Israel for his entire political career.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

I personally don’t see the Fedora team breaking away from Gnome just yet, but he makes some good points.

Starting in 2025, KDE Plasma’s release cycle switches to a semi-annual cadence that lines up with Fedora Linux releases, enabling a tight interlock of development and integration between Fedora and KDE.

This is the key change that might make such a move viable, imo. One of the key benefits of Gnome to point release distros, and Fedora in particular, is the predictable 6-month release cycle. If KDE achieve the same, then it will make the proposition a lot more attractive.
