I mean, most people doesn’t even question how a dude walked on water, either.

Many years ago I tried it, but didn’t really read up on it. Wanted to back up my Pi’s sdcard while the system was running. I even fucking named that script “online-backup”.

Now every time I ran that, after hours, I noticed my Pi was crashing, and never booted back up. I used chinese sd cards so I blamed it on them.

But this happened multiple times, just to learn I was using dd absolutely wrong.

dd was always a scary utility to me, and still is. I fucked up things with dd, regardless I quadruple checked everything 😅

but to answer the question; it’s possible, but you really need to know what are you doing.

You can always check its consistency if you run a mount -a after editing fstab. But yeah, an error in the file can cause some annoyance-

NVU, Dreamweaver were tried to be like this. Only thing that wysiwyg’ing HTML isn’t that easy as one might think, especially nowadays where thousands of web css frameworks exists and every structuring is done via divs.

You could make your own framework, or select/import one you like, but then the app will have way too much parameter, which needs to be configured by the user. It would be a really neat power tool, though.

ps.: Funny thing I was just thinking about wysiwyg editors in the recent days 😅

Download the image again and/or try a different pendrive, different hole on computer.

Check MD5 sums of downloaded ISO if they provide you a sum on the webpage

a long time ago I’ve heard that maybe the only reasoning behind the “K” is that it comes before “L” in the alphabet (L, cause of “Linux”)

Idk how true is this, but I’ve found this “explanation” amusing.

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know if this memory of mine is real, or just a (day)dreaming or my brain just fucks with me, or just too much acid, but I clearly remember lots of years ago I opened GIMP and the splash screen had this fox IN A FUCKING GIMP SUIT!

I guess she got used to the sight of drawn animals in gimp suit on my screen by that time

dedicated “little brother” controller

From Windows to about 6 recommended distros for gaming.

I am not bad with computers and have a beginner+, maybe intermediate level knowledge of Linux and I kept running into some problems here and there with different distros. Most claimed to work out of the box (which may be the case for some users, but I have a shit ass Nvidia 1060 and that was not at all the case, until I...

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly I never expect any system to work out-of-the-box, not even Windows.

Most of the time if I see something JustWorks™ I suspect it is using some general ass drivers that may work, but with functions lost.

Probably this isn’t the case anymore, but it still gives me a lot of work to verify everything is REALLY fine and dandy.

shoulder button placement is a pain in the ass though…

BlackBerry was managed to run Android next to QNX somehow (BB OS10)

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it was already on old enough version when it was a thing.

But to my understanding, it wasn’t emulation, rather having a compatibility layer between QNX and Android.

so AFAIK, it was rather like Proton on Linux? but maybe I’m totally wrong here, haha.

@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

I kinda liked how Android apps almost integrated to the Hub. 😄

we need to just rebuild the web, built on a decentralized LoRa or such mesh network.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

I second this, having a dedicated, 2013 era machine for Kodi is more than perfect. Most plugins are maintaned and updated regularly.

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

my experience with it was also kind of a rollercoaster, but libreELEC on x64 harware with some basic IGPU was the key for me.

I tried it on Raspberry Pis (OG and 3) but that surely was painful.

since using a nornal PC, I really have no issues with compatibility, even the most obscure, sonewhat recently updated plugins work no problem.

but I can feel you, it needed several chances from me too, but I needed to replace my PS3 (uaing Movian - what an amazing piece of software!) cause it had issues with some recent fullhd files.

as a kid, I was the responsible for having the classroom’s key in breaks for a while.

and deep down I always had an irresistable urge to throw that key out the window, to the road outside. never did… but… it was soooo tempting. no idea, why, though 😅

There is one uncleared level remaining in Super Mario Maker, with 18 days to go before the servers shut down (www.issmmbeatenyet.com)

UPDATE: Ahoyoo has confirmed that Trimming the Herbs was uploaded with TAS tools, meaning that The Last Dance was the final legitimate level all along! Congrats to kazeihinn on the Last First Clear! The journey continues in Super Mario Maker 2…...

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

It would have also been as hard to TAS on the WiiU at the time than to just practice the level.

What do you mean by that?

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

in 2017, the Wii U was an already open book for homebrewers IIRC, that’s why I asked why considering TAS was almost no-go at the time.

thanks for thr write up though!

as much I love the genre, but most single player 3D action/adventure platformer games that are based around a story OR fully arcade-y.

both aspect looses their point if you 100% the game.

Like, I just finished New Super Lucky’s Tale, and though it was an excellent 3d platformer, I don’t think I’ll start a new game.

but not only 3D games. Like Shovel Knight also falls into this category. Amazing and exciting game, but other than a harder difficulty (as New Game+), it doesn’t really have too much of a replayability.

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

thanks for the reply, I’ll definitely will look into alsamixer or pavucontrol and dig deeper, to have true 2.1 setup.

I have another, integrated card, but there’s no room for the subwoofer output - or so do I thibk, that’s why I’m using an external one.

All my pain would end by using a jack splitter/joiner, but where’s the fun in that 😅

thanks again, mate. will report, if you are interested

either Super Mario Bros. on a famiclone or Circus Charlie.

I remember being spooked the fuck out by those “fire rings”. man, they looked and still look otherwordly. the whole game gave me creeps.

best.

I used and use for gaming and OBS mechanical hard drives - no issues with them.

I won’t run OS from them anymore, but gaming and recording full hd live is not a problem.

maybe the OS doing some buffering to SSD, idk, but as NOT the only drive, they are still pretty nice.

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

fill up the remaining space on the drive completely with 0s with a dummy file you delete then, before gzipping

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

they should make Mario Kart open world and marry it with Need For Speed => Mario Kart Underground.

hey, Nintendo employee who use Lemmy and read this: push this up for the big bosses around you, because man, that would be a super epic game and a worthy sequel

What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved?

I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....

kuneho,
@kuneho@lemmy.world avatar

Earthbound for the SNES.

It had a rough launch, rough reviews at the time, but the best RPG I’ve ever played, period.
