Oh wow, I really didn’t expect this, and aside from all the problems with sex trafficking, this is a huge win for privacy… for now

I mean that argument is ridiculous, saying that things are “documented” when the thing is literally called tmpfiles.d and the man page starts with the following explanation:

It is mostly commonly used for volatile and temporary files and directories (such as those located under /run/, /tmp/, /var/tmp/, the API file systems such as /sys/ or /proc/, as well as some other directories below /var/).

So basically some genius decided that its a good idea to reuse this system for creating non-tmp directories. Overall my opinion of systemd is reluctant acceptance though I always wondered why the old way was a problem. Need a service started on boot? Well, we had crontab and sysvinit with some plain files. Need a service shut down? Well that’s the kill command. I guess I don’t really know why systemd was made

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

I guess reading the history, systemd did a better job of dependency resolution and parallel loading of startup services. Then some less interesting stuff like logins, permissions, and device management - which definitely seems out of scope. There’s been like 15 alternatives since it was made, but none of them got critical mass, and now pretty much every mainstream distro can’t run without it. Sad face

While I’m here complaining, I really miss the days when Arch was configured from a single global file that handled many things like setting your hostname, locale, etc. I think it was dropped bc of maintenance & being not unixy enough. Kinda ironic

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Well, US is doing exactly this too. It doesn’t appear so incoherent - from a perspective of achieving objectives while attempting to reduce casualties. (And making a ton of money in the process)

Steal an unloved kitten and give her a good home

Anyone remember this one video of a guy designing a new command line shell?

I think I remember seeing it on this community. It was a darkly colored video. It was mostly focused on UX design, and the guy was talking about pretty innovative features with auto completion suggestions and undoing and things like that. Does anyone remember it or have a link? My search was fruitless.

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Fk if I know, that describes every shell. But new trends include starship.rs and nushell. Just use zsh tho, it’s perfect, always has been

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Performance of what, zsh? C ain’t good enough anymore??

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I sure don’t, have been happy with my prompt for a decade

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

I’m honestly so trolled, I hate change & hate the idea that something might be better than my existing Arch install. I hate that security, reliability, and flexibility are improved. I cope by reminding myself that I’m very low on disk space right now, for the needed extra partitions

That’s so fucking funny, dude really hates Google. XScreenSaver was released in 1992 fyi, and was once considered the pride and joy of Linux, being way cooler than other OS screensavers, and had a big community of ppl trying to make new trippy ones

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Super apparent performance on my ancient Chromebook with barely any resources. Beautiful animations that make it look like a modern laptop, well, until ram runs out. It can run about 3x as much stuff compared to stock ChromeOS. Love this with Pipewire, Linux a/v is honestly better than both osx and windows now and I’m so impressed. Can even do pro audio type stuff where you route the a/v from one app to another. It’s worth losing all the network ability that X11 has

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I mean it’s still kinda cool. X protocol is vector based iirc, and you can just set up xauth and use ssh -X to forward windows over ssh

Anyway I’m sure this doesn’t matter today, and the performance sucks for typical use

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Well not really @ last part bc the president can declare an emergency for ~any reason and appropriate funds. Yaaay demoncracy

Generally, us presidents fall into the do whatever they want, “move fast and break shit” philosophy. And as the world’s arms dealers, the USA has every reason to be involved in every conflict. That’s our greatest national industry

What Bartsbigbugbag meant to say is “the US has been actively inching closer to China for decades and has completed a full military base / trade wall that spans across the entire set of islands - Japan, Taiwan, Philippines - outlining the entire east / south China seas and reducing China’s economic/military power”

China has ample reason to be pissed at this. It’s actually a very impressive contain if you look at the positions of our military bases and trade routes. But it’s also just normal Risk-style territory control that all superpowers play with. Nobody is really the bad guy here, and the island countries like their situation - like Japan, historic enemy of China - gets to enjoy doing nothing while America basically runs their entire military for them

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Neat that it has this new modern binds mode where it understands normal copy paste and stuff

Linux is amazing. It’s hitting peak productivity with support for every driver, and highly optimized systems like Systems, Dbus, Wayland,and Pipewire. It’s actually world class rn, both windows and Mac are jealous of what the core Linux is now. Linux now runs every server, most of the world’s phones, most of the IoT devices, and some gaming stuff

But it’s still a tiny percentage of desktop/laptop, so yeah idk it’s all good

Idk man, I’ve used a lot of UI toolkits, and I don’t really see anything wrong with GTK (though they do basically rewrite it from scratch every few years it seems…)

The only thing that comes to mind is the React-ish world of UI systems, where model-view-controller patterns are more obvious to use. I.e. a concept of state where the UI automatically re-renders based on the data backing it

But generally, GTK is a joy, and imo the world of HTML has long been trying to catch up to it. It’s only kinda recently that we got flexbox, and that was always how GTK layouts were. The tooling, design guidelines, and visual editors have been great for a long time

I played this as a child it was brutal

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Idk if that’s the right takeaway, more like ‘oh shit there’s probably many of these long con contributors out there, and we just happened to catch this one because it was a little sloppy due to the 0.5s thing’

This shit got merged. Binary blobs and hex digit replacements. Into low level code that many things use. Just imagine how often there’s no oversight at all

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Very generous to imagine that maintainers have so much time on their hands

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

The whole point here is that the build process was infiltrated - so you’d have to remake the build system yourself to compare, and that’s not a task that can be automated

Yep remember all that showmanship about how the Republicans in Congress are evil and preventing aid. Well, then white house just decided to send it anyway, as if that wasn’t always an option…

He’s not actually, and if you read it, he warns that assigning meaning to meaninglessness is a fallacy. People feel bad because there’s no meaning but then that’s applying meaning to it. Transcendence of meaning frees you from it entirely and leads to Buddhism, which also embraced “emptiness” at the core of reality

Is gentoo Linux really worth it?

I’ve installed gentoo but there seems like there’s so many sacrifices. I love that it’s all open source, but I really don’t mind closed source software now and then, because after all I would be using it to play closed source games. The biggest compromise I’ve observed is the very long build times. I have a lukewarm...

Man that’s wild that ChromeOS started as Ubuntu but then changed to Gentoo as a base. Then they launched the Linux VM thing and those images are based on Debian

Well, I can’t say I get it, but yeah cool

I started using tiling window managers. What tips do you have? What packages do you use to make yours fully functional? Lost noob needs some guidance...

I decided to dive heads first into window managers and need your input for your guidance. I’m absolutely not a Linux-pro. I basically never use the terminal, just started using Github, and only used Gnome (+ KDE for 1/8th the time) for now....

lung,
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

I used to be a tiling wm arch purist, even worked on a tiling wm called Awesome. Until one day my boss pointed out that all any dev wants is a terminal with splits and a full screen web browser. It was this moment I became enlightened

Yeah just keep laying off staff until they are, amirite?

Statements like this are always saved for when a corp justifies layoffs. The reality is that the American tax code is made to encourage corps to spend all the money you make (in which case corps don’t pay tax at all). VCs and big tech leverage their positions to massively increase power whether the individual company has savings or not
