The family and I headed to Frey's Brewing Company in , for drinks and games. I started with the Frey's Winter Devil Rave, an 8.5% ABV imperial stout. My wife enjoyed a sugar free caramel vanilla iced coffee. I followed it up with Smoochin' Roy Rogers, a 7% ABV Irish stout. The kid enjoyed a chocolate muffin. We played Tell Me Without Telling Me for a bit followed by a couple rounds of Shut the Box. We always love stops at Frey's! @beersofmastodon

Black beer in a glass snifter with a wooden Shut the Box game beside.

I like my smoked beers intense, but even by my standards this Smoky George Kraftbier is a bit extreme. It needs the elevated abv to have some malt body noticeable. Not quite balanced, but quite the flavor bomb.

Compared to e.g. a Schlenkerla Märzen, which I think is 100% smoked malt, how do they get all that flavor in here? Artificial smoke aroma?

This is a "Dubbel"-style from the Maredsous Abbey ("6"), from 1984! 40 years of aging have resulted in lots of , with strong apple syrup aromas. It's a bit thin, but surprisingly has a tiny bit of carbonation left! The wet cardboard aroma is lightly present. Interesting! 🍻

Coco Loco - Zulu Alpha - 4.6% ABV. B+ and a bit, a pale porter. Coconut, bitter, hoppy, with a dry, bitter, fruity finish

3.3/5. Caldicot’s finest on Keg. Very different and also very pleasant. Rather more wind now @beersofmastodon

The lacing was absolutely fabulous on this English Pale Ale (Northern Monkey - Fall From Grace), served from cask at the Post Office Vaults in Birmingham.

Forgot to post my recent review line-up, so here goes. Some surprising beers, some that warranted an email to the brewers. Some great ones, too. 🍻

Walhalla Elixer, a beautiful NEIPA

A tasty surprise from 1UP: lots of dark/bitter chocolate, earthy coffee and a subtle sweetness. Def looks different than it tastes. 😁😋

Yesterday, we had our monthly local beer tasting club. An interesting lineup with a homebrew, an investor's beer that isn't commercially available and some more! In the bar across the street we had a small drink afterwards: Orval from 2019. 🍻

3.3/5. This still may be a Festival Ale but I’m not sure and the £1.88 a Pint has now gone. Very solid ale this @beersofmastodon

Drinking a Holy Donut Dark Chocolate Peppermint by Lone Pine Brewing and it's effing great! The dark chocolate is delicious and the peppermint is prevalent but not overbearing. Super smooth as well. Sad I bought a single of this one. I'll definitely be heading back to the store to grab more. @beersofmastodon

Another interesting set of beer reviews. It seems that ever more hazy/NE IPAs have only limited haziness. The Dunkelweizen was a classic example and the Pohjala chocolate porter was the absolute nail hitter tonight.

One thing I can't get over is sexist names and texts on the label. Just don't. 🍻
