I doubt he proclaimed himself as such. Nobody does that and double that for politicians. This article proves him right, he is being persecuted and this article is that.

In 1991, when he was president of the student body at Bowling Green State University, he was quoted by two students in an article for the school newspaper saying, “I’m homophobic, I admit it, I have a problem with it.”
This was amidst a controversy where he was alleged to have discriminated against a candidate for the student senate for his sexual orientation.
His defense of this amounts to “it was just a joke bro. Also fringe minorities cry about discrimination too much.”
It’s not persecution when people don’t elect you for behaving like a bigoted little shit.

I guess? I was homophobic as hell back in high school, but I’m now a firm supporter of LGBT+ rights. But I suppose this guy isn’t claiming to have changed.
