AndrewZabar,

And of course something will likely happen like that. They couldn’t help themselves, so it’s inevitable.

AndrewZabar,

I find the Discord interface to be utter chaos.

AndrewZabar,

His point is that you have no point.

AndrewZabar,

So, copying is making something identical. But something that’s different would rationally be called not copying, whereas you categorize it as poor copying. Interesting.

Ever hear of two things just being similar? We are talking about a UI - these things have always followed patterns that change as usage patterns change in the industry. I think you must be young and/or inexperienced because this kind of trend goes back to the ‘80s.

AndrewZabar,

I never recommend Mint! It’s like it became this de facto distro to steer newbies toward just because it sort of kind of looks like Windows? Elementary OS is simple, polished, elegant and in a good way less customizable so the user can just get to work.

Alternatively if they want something more familiar like the start menu there’s KDE on Ubuntu or OpenSUSE, among others.

Mint was impressive like fifteen years ago; it’s still fine, but nothing in particular makes it more appealing than some of the ones I mentioned which have significant advantages.

AndrewZabar,

people who just want their computer to work with minimal hassle.

Elementary OS. Hassle-free, elegant and polished, distraction-free.

AndrewZabar,

Not even close to approaching mainstream!

AndrewZabar,

Yeah there’s no need to change if you’re content with what you’re using.

AndrewZabar,

Why does an article about the power rangers have a thumbnail of Voltron?

Why does nobody here ever recommend Fedora to noobs?

I have tried Linux as a DD on and off for years but about a year ago I decided to commit to it no matter the cost. First with Mint, then Ubuntu and a few others sprinkled in briefly. Both are “mainstream” “beginner friendly” distros, right? I don’t want anything too advanced, right?...

AndrewZabar,

Yeah that’s not a distro’s fault that’s something wrong. I run several machines with a variety of distros and nothing crashes ever, unless I’m testing partially working software.

AndrewZabar,

Yeah I’m seriously sensing there’s a massive bit of info we haven’t been given. I can’t even conjure up a way that a distro would “break” a monitor lol.

AndrewZabar,

I finally gave up entirely on OpenShot once I discovered ShotCut. OpenShot couldn’t handle the simplest things sometimes and literally could not get some things right ever. ShotCut is extraordinarily better. I’m absolutely thrilled with it in comparison.

AndrewZabar,

Probably is!

AndrewZabar,

If you want an in-between I have been extremely happy with ShotCut so far.

Tried to dual boot W11 & Ubuntu & bricked my PC

Not sure if this is the right place to ask or if anyone can help me, but today, I installed the ubuntu ISO & converted it to a bootable format on an 128GB SD card (All my USBs are too small) I ran the installer as normal & here’s where I think I messed up. I allocated a 27GB partition for linux but that option didnt apper on...

AndrewZabar,

As an aside I think I’ve seen Windows 11 being extremely intolerant of allowing another OS to setup the dual boot. I think someone responded to an inquiry about it that - sarcastically - Microsoft was jealous other OSes are being used more so they fuck with anything and need to be the install that establishes the boot loader. Not sure how much of that to take seriously but let’s face it, they’re dying and not going without a hissy fit.

AndrewZabar,

Yay. Maybe now can they focus on some of the things more than nine people in the world care about?

Is Arcanum worth playing?

I played a little of it when I first got it, but then I heard that it’s better to patch it. So I joined the discord for it and figured I’d look into that later. Well later turned into years, eventually I left the discord server to make space for other servers and never did wind up going back to Arcanum....

AndrewZabar,

lol like when some of us had whole paragraph long quotes, or elaborate ASCII art. I remember one guy had a nude woman in ASCII art. It was actually pretty impressive. This was back before there were apps that made them for you from images.

  • AndrewZabar,

How is Wesnoth? I think I’ve installed it on numerous Linux boxes and my iPhone but never actually tried it yet. Is it worth getting into?

The retro game experts at Digital Eclipse have released a remaster of [1981's] Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (www.theverge.com)

Craft your own party of adventurers and head into the labyrinth at the behest of the mad overlord Trebor, in search of the amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Battle challenging monsters, avoid hidden traps, and find your way through the dungeon for the ultimate showdown with Werdna himself.

    AndrewZabar,

Omg I loved that one! Werdna!

Also loved Crusaders of the Dark Savant, that one was beyond fantastic!

    AndrewZabar,

Well, Might & Magic had the advantage of letting you make your moves turn by turn, where’s Wizardry had that weird system where you commit each party member’s action all at once and then let ‘er rip. I always found it strange and also inconvenient.

    AndrewZabar,

It’s foreshortening; there’s nothing “triumph” about it. That being said, hell yeah it’s gorgeous artwork.
