@LovesTha@floss.social

A melbournian with many interests:

  • Christian (very liberal)
  • Embedded Linux Engineer
  • Magic The Gathering judge
  • Mechanical keyboard enthusiast (mostly DIY, all very small, Colemak layout)
  • Trying to get into woodworking

All too often I come off as argumentative, I'm working on it but definitely a work in progress. Also frequently more pedantic than I'm comfortable with.

@PowerCrazy @glasgitarrewelt why can't we ban private cars in suburban and urban areas?

(We can't do it tomorrow, but we can work towards it)

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@EatATaco @Moonrise2473 teens do stupid shit without ebikes. And them using one doesn't increase the danger to non users by much.

Cars and trucks do.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Tak @FireRetardant Yes, when a bus route will result in a larger vehicle with 1 occupant they are bad.

That is a very small % of passenger mileage.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Tak Or build stations and tracks where so few people will use them.

Building more tracks for everything would be good, but still not an answer for everything.

A world where we only had trains and push bikes would be nice, but not likely to happen.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@figstick @Tak you probably need a density of more than 1 person per square km. That is where most people live. It is great for most people. Maybe even nearly everyone.

But for the last 0.1% something else is needed.

But even then it might be better to have personal rail vehicles on private tracks (the same tracks the farm should be using for it's produce.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@njordomir @Sanctus The safe money is it will also run too infrequently to be a good replacement. Adding 'time waiting for train' to the picture for trips outside of 69am or 37pm and officials wonder why services aren't well used.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@njordomir But all of it is network effect in action: the incremental value of each piece is related to how many pieces already exist.

@NotMyOldRedditName @Hypx I'm not against it, but I didn't think most of the copper in a modern car / EV was in the LV supply wiring, so such a change would be more in the range of a 10% reduction?

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@NotMyOldRedditName Are power carrying wires the bulk of the wires in a car?

And by power I mean more than 5W where wire gauges start to get serious at 12V. An indicator LED is technically needing power, but not enough that wire gauge bulks up.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@NotMyOldRedditName yes, but that is tangential to my point (and your original point). The total length of wires doesn't tell you if they are power or data.

LovesTha,

@HexesofVexes @nehal3m Most people should live where walking to a grocery store is easy. Most advocates want to fix a lot of things, not just 1.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@HexesofVexes @nehal3m Cycling commute times can be pretty compeditive in big cities, driving can have very bad worst case speeds where cycling is very stable.

The pictured example in Melbourne is 0:35 to 1:40 by car and 1:25 by bike. Yes the car will frequently win, but you can leave later to guarantee being in the office by 9. (TOA was set to 8:55am)

(The best and fastest is cycle to local station and catch the train)

@_sideffect @Zagorath We all agree you got fucked.

But this community thinks you didn't just get fucked by your employer but by zoning and planning and such too. Better zoning and infrastructure would have you looking at a 10m cycle plus a 15m train ride to the office of the employer that fucked you.

@stom @Norodix Pity Tesla hasn't taken reasonable precautions to ensure the driver is driving.

It isn't unreasonable to have customers expect the thing they were sold to do the thing they were told it does.

@notfromhere @Grass They shouldn't need much more than a tap I would have thought when sliding into the correctly sized hole (I wouldn't be surprised at concrete being higher friction than asphalt when both have been drilled)

American Motorcyclist Association Urges DOT to Act on Automated Driver System Regulations Following Tragic Collision (americanmotorcyclist.com)

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (April 26, 2024) — In the wake of the most recent tragedy involving a fatal collision between a Tesla vehicle in autopilot mode and a motorcyclist in Washington state, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) once again urges the Department of Transportation (DOT) to strengthen Automated Driving System...

@xmunk @Showroom7561 the impression we are there already is only marginally more dangerous than thinking it is only 5~10 years off. Full self driving is still very hard.

@Zagorath @zerakith recumbent trikes are excellent at low speed manouvers, which can be a boon in busy areas where any bike must be walked. I only once tried to corner too fast and that was faster than I corner on a bike anyway.

Hills are fine, in theory better than a bike as you have something to push against. So if you are light and have poor arm strength you can put out more power in a recumbent. Or just someone with legs stronger than that

They are trash at going through narrow spaces.

@FartsWithAnAccent @lemmyreader I loved my tadpole. Super sad that I haven't been able to find the budget to get one again since I had to sell it when I moved back in with my parents.

@Rentlar are train tunnels cheaper than bus tunnels? The ones that get built tend to be because single lane traffic tunnels are rare (and dangerous) and the are a larger bore than a train tunnel.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Rentlar I though two single track tunnels were faster to bore than a single double track tunnel.

@Bytemeister @hobovision which is another reason the range anxiety narative is harmful: people buy EVs with batteries larger than they need

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@Bytemeister Did I say you did?

Not every reply is arguing against you, I was agreeing with you and pointing out one of the factors going into EVs having batteries larger than needed

@dillekant @Anamnesis There is also too many PHEV's that are given to people as work vehicles when they have no option to plug in. Ideal, the right user and real world can all be very different scenarios.

Don't take any numbers at face value, actually understand what is being measured.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

2-7kg personal vehicles are optimal efficiency, 20-70kg personal vehicles allow for everyone to do anything (okay some of the larger electric wheelchairs blow past 70kg pretty easily, but allow me some artistic licence).

Even busses aren't amazing on vehicle weight per person: 16,000kg for 50 people is 320kg per person. Good suburban trains bring that back down to 230kg per person.

So for cars to be viable your 5 seater needs to be 1600kg max. And one needs to actually use those seats.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

I was intending it as an indication that individual cars are hard to justify.

Additionally cars have inefficiencies around parking (time/energy spent doing it, space required) that PT doesn't.

They are only a good solution when ignoring/socialising so many of the costs and prioritising things that are really not important (or from a lack of imagination of what else is possible)

@Habahnow @PastaCeci "I want to do it my self" says man purchasing petrol from Iraq to fuel a car manufactured by thousands of people and assembled in a dozen countries.

Anyone actually doing things by themselves isn't concerned with car policy as they know they can't produce a car.

They already are happy to purchase things from a store that have been delivered to that store in a collective way, what is weird about getting wood delivered to their property?
