Is Privacy Worth It? (blog.thenewoil.org)

When I announced I would be closing my communities earlier this year, a curious thing happened: a surprising number of regulars replied with some variation of “I think this is my exit.” While some were specifically talking about Matrix, claiming that mine was the only room they were really active in and therefore they saw no...

SomeAmateur,

Yeah I’m not really trying to hide from the govt, but I would vote on limiting their power if given the chance. Anyway, what I don’t want is every corporation I deal with (car, bank, phone, apps, isp, etc) to track me so excessively.

If the govt did get curious it would take zero leg work, just ask those companies that are very willing to hand over my data to damn near anyone, or hold onto it long enough to have it stolen.

So with that in mind limiting corporate surveillance and limiting ease of govt surveillance is essentially the same thing, but the govt has the ability to put in the work and get you if they really wanted to.

SomeAmateur,

How could you guess? This is my brother’s actually! We both wear gshocks and I knew how so I changed it for him. That little watch has seen some things and has the character to prove it

SomeAmateur,

Oh yeah!

SomeAmateur,

I agree at some point it’s probably worth the investment in the more durable straps you know will last a while

Osmand is really cool and it’s really capable but I understand that it isn’t for people who don’t want to tinker a bit to make things work just right for them.

For that Organic Maps is what I recommend.

Idk how the new user experience is now but back when I first downloaded it I wanted a hybrid of sat imagery when cell signal allowed, with an overlay of offline OSM data. This was for two reasons, hiking and to see if the mapping in that hike area needed any major land use edits.

Anyway I had to fiddle with the menus and settings for a while to get the overlays where I wanted it to be. Don’t get me wrong I was able to figure it out but for users who want to install and go it can be understandably frustrating

It’s like $20 for cheap devices that talk to your phone via bluetooth. They have standalone devices too to fix that potential vulnerability.

I’m messing around with a few rn. Heltec V3s and TBeam Supremes.

Mine was a simple black Casio W216. I picked it up prior to basic training and it had everything I needed. 24 hour time, backlight, tough enough to survive but cheap enough to not cry about it if it somehow didn’t.

But it did and I gave it to my brother who wore it for a while before losing it on a trip

SomeAmateur,

?

SomeAmateur,

Nice I like the look of them

SomeAmateur,

It’s a beautiful design! I love quartz watches but I have to admit that there’s something about mechanical movements. Just knowing that it’s a bunch of tiny springs and gears instead of electronics is really cool despite the drawbacks.

Stardew Valley and Kingdom Come Deliverance are the two big ones at the moment. I’ve played both a bit at a time for a while now.

Stardew Valley needs little introduction. It’s a beautiful gem of an indie game. I’m in fall of year two and just getting used to married life and making that sweet sweet gold making wine and jelly.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is an awesome RPG in a non-fantasy medieval setting. You’re the son of a blacksmith and your town is burned by a massive army leaving you a refugee seeking to avenge your parents. You’re no war hero or chosen one, just a man trying to find his place in the beautiful but uncertain world…and maybe learn to read while he’s at it

My grandma told me of a relative that came to visit them in the US from Eastern Europe (Slovakia I think) after the Soviet Union dissolved.

One thing they noticed is that he always wore his shoes. Even when staying at home. Even to bed. They asked why and he explained that it was to give him a chance of escape if the Secret Police came and he was surprised that our family didn’t have to do something similar.

SomeAmateur,

I bet there are, just a matter of scale and effectiveness.

There’s an organization that sneaks usb drives to North Korea. Full of news, shows, articles etc all hand picked by former NK citizens that defected

SomeAmateur,

I’m sure it’s not all 100% objective truth. Nobody wants to talk shit about themselves willingly. But yeah just sayin.

SomeAmateur,

Nobody as in world leaders. Not nobody as in individual citizens.

People in the US know things are fucked up, but when was the last time you heard that said in a State of the Union address for example? When it’s on a world stage every country tries to look good.

SomeAmateur,

Absolutely. I gave this to him as a gift and he wears it all the time

SomeAmateur,

Death Star designers avoided lawsuits with this simple trick!

SomeAmateur,

Like the VR system from the Star Wars Christmas Special?

Wrist watches used to be women’s wear. Pocket watches were for men until WW1 when they found out that wrist mounted timepieces are super handy when you need to carry a rifle all the time and launch attacks synchronized with walking artillery barrages.

Just like anything else it can be purely for looks or purely for function but the best stuff does both at once. A nice looking precise watch, a pen that looks and writes great, dress shoes comfortable enough to wear all day, an Italian suit with a tactical liner lol

SomeAmateur,

Imagine the synthphonies that could be composed!

SomeAmateur,

UXOs are no joke. Imagine how long that was just sitting there before it was discovered!

Not pre 2010 but Shadows of Doubt is worth a mention. You are a former cop turned private eye, solving crimes in a procedually generated city trying to make ends meet. You pick locks, hack emails, use air vents and “Jensen your way in” to chase leads, collect evidence and bring justice that the megacorporation government won’t.

It’s far from perfect but is the best “Deus Ex 1 we have at home” I’ve seen.

SomeAmateur,

lol I’m reading this waiting for HOI4 to load

Rn I’m playing the america divided redux or whatever it’s called now. Trying to make the “It’s all Ohio” meme a thing haha
