The Rwandan Genocide was a horrific crime against humanity and yes the West could have done a lot more to stop it. The world should never forget.

But it really grinds my gears to see grandstanding by an authoritarian dictator like Kagame, who is running a state with terrible press freedom, torture, arbitrary detention, etc etc (and committed his own share of war crimes then and later, for that matter).

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Good. Advocates have been sounding the warning for a long time now.

With or without the alleged "human bones" that stuff is a scourge.

Ethiopia’s army accused of committing war crimes in Amhara region (www.aljazeera.com)

Ethiopia’s army “summarily executed several dozen civilians” and committed other war crimes in the northwestern Amhara region earlier this year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said, as it called on the United Nations to launch an independent investigation....

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Fair enough but what word do you use instead of enshittification? It filled a gap in the language.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It has nothing to do with Russia. It's a formal process started by South Africa (who have a long-standing interest in Palestinian human rights because of Apartheid). They have so far been formally joined by Nicaragua and now Colombia.

A bunch of other countries have expressed support and may join at a future date, including Ireland and the African Union.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Wow, those are some serious mental gymnastics, if you think people are only upset about a literal genocide as some sort of distraction.

Still, if that's what you and @muntedcrocodile genuinely believe, I'd expect you both would be posting articles on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and drawing the kinds of attention you want for that issue.

But when I look at your profiles, neither of you appear to be doing that.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Okay I went and had a look at it, you're still not posting any articles. You need to contribute more content on Ukraine if you want people to talk about that content.

The threads part of the fediverse is small, it doesn't get the paid political astroturfer shills and bots that reddit gets. Most people on here are real people holding real opinions.

You're not going to win more attention for Ukraine by telling people like me that we are somehow pro-Russian just for caring about a genocide.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Did u know that the civilian solder death ration in Palestine is almost identical to all city based warfare.

I know for a fact that's completely false. The civilian death toll in Gaza is much higher than in comparable conflicts. You're clearly regurgitating fake facts from Israelis or something.

In fact the Gaza death toll in 5 months was 1.5% of the population (hald of whom are children). For comparison in 2 years the Bosnian Genocide death toll was 3% of the population.

Look I was sympathetic to you wanting people to talk more about Ukraine but trying to derail other conversations and denying a genocide is not cool.

I'm interested in human rights of all kinds and I'm going to talk about all of them as much as I want.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

And by "believe" we mean "want", in the case of Israel.

Netanyahu is attacking Israel's neighbours because he's trying to drag more countries into this mess.

Once that happens, the US will get further involved and the Israeli genocide against Palestinian civilians becomes just one front rather than the focal point.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

He honestly sounds more creepy not less creepy after that part.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This article is ignoring a lot of things. The biggest barrier to reconciliation is probably that Kagame's repressive regime relies on keeping enmities alive.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Erasmus = student exchange between universities.

If you end up hosting other people's students but nobody else hosts yours, then you end up spending more on education.

According to the article UK students are less likely to go overseas because they can't speak any of the languages.

It's a bit like if you kept having your kids' friends over to dinner but your own kids were too picky to ever eat dinner at their friends' houses.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think most likely governments pay into Erasmus and then individual universities get fees reimbursed. The appeal of it for students is you don't pay international fees.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

A month ago Israel said it was going to "flood Gaza with aid".

All it did was flood Gaza with the blood of more children and aid workers.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

South Africa

I'd love to know your thinking here. You picked the one country that's been constantly reporting Isreal to the international courts for genocide.

Or were you imagining a District 9 situation?

The best candidate for Israel would be the US, that's where their biggest source of immigrants is. If you're moving millions of people you'd need to send them to wealthy countries.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

do people think Netanyahu would just say ‘uncle’

No, but if their national security was contingent on it I do think the Israelis would suddenly work out a way to get rid of Netanyahu after all.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

typical r/politics users

Aaah I see. I came here from all and was surprised at the tone of the comments in here.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Interesring approach. It may not have masses of religions but it's sometimes called the Rainbow Nation because it has like 8 major ethnicities/cultures.

But since the majority of older people were victims of Apartheid (during which Israel supported the racist Apartheid regime at the time) and South Africa have been calling out Israel for practicing apartheid for decades, it would be about as stirring the pot as you can get.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This honestly reminds me of that meme where the dog only barks and snarls at the other dog when the gate is between them and whenever it opens he shuts up.

@livus@kbin.social avatar

This one not the one with the Alsatian.

President Macron says France and its allies 'could have stopped' the 1994 Rwanda genocide (apnews.com)

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that France and its allies could have stopped the 1994 Rwanda genocide but lacked the will to do so, a strong declaration ahead of the African country’s 30th anniversary of the slaughter that left over 800,000 people dead....

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Macron will recall that when the genocide started, “the international community had the means to know and to take actions” based on the knowledge about genocides that had been revealed by survivors of the Armenian genocide and the Holocaust

Is the speechwriter tone-deaf, or are they intentionally making an ironic point about the current international genocide situation?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

France played a big role in the Rwandan genocide tho.

users and contributors need to stop feeling entitled to maintainers’ unpaid labor and time

And the rest of us need to stand up for maintainers against bullies.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It isn't. @Drusas is right.

Beyond the staggering number of deaths, Israel’s ongoing bombardment in Gaza is also taking a drastic toll on infrastructure. So far in the conflict, an estimated 157,200 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. That adds up to more than half of all buildings in the densely populated area, and nearly three-fourths in the northern parts of Gaza.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I too am outraged by the outrage.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This article's compatible with that. The tldr is as usual brother laser, any model.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I thought the whole point of having a democracy was people got to choose their leaders.

If you're saying leaders become too powerful to reject, that's troubling.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

To clarify, the above wasn't some kind of rhetorical question. I'm not American and am not asking for voting guidance.

You seemed to be saying that once a politician gets to a position of power, voters are no longer allowed to try to influence their decisions around whether to run, be the nominee etc.

That seems problematic to me, and against the basic principles of democracy, so I'm querying it.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That seems really anti-democracy. If an incumbent performs poorly or breaks promises there should be mechanisms for people to ask to select another candidate to represent them.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

But didn't you just say they can't vote for non-Biden democrats?

I feel like either I completely misunderstood your initial comment about Presidents having so much power, or else you're misunderstanding what I'm asking.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, yeah I misunderstood your initial point. Thanks for explaining.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Of course war crimes against civilians are a problem in war. And yes all decent people think rape is a problem.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It's always worth talking about though because there's a lot of disinterest and downplaying of it.

The charities for women raped in wars deal with a lot of problems like operations for incontinence, and women who have had a hole punched through from their rectum into the vagina and have constant infections and fecal matter dribbling out through it, etc etc.

It's often extremely violent and can cause permanent physical damage. But because it mainly happens to women and children, it's sort of hand-waved.

livus, (edited )
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm anti-war.

But I don't accept the idea that we can't try to define and stop war crimes. It's not a binary between no war at all, versus "anything goes" raping women and children etc, committing genocide etc.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is my favourite meme of the week.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Peter Dinklage is like 1000x better looking and as @ech pointed out is already fully grown.

If I had to pick an actor who looks like Billy Mitchell I'd say Gary Cole.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

For now. The US is a victim of legislative capture by corporations and it's possible that in the future lobbying by insurance companies will open the door to them using some of that data.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Of course it breaks international law. International law experts have been saying this for a long time.

The fact politicians admitting it is some kind of gotcha secret is ridiculous. We're really in the Emperor's New Clothes territory now.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Exactly. If the Emperor admits the clothes don't exist they need to go get dressed.

But we can all see the truth.

"Famine" is a technical term with quite a high threshold:

  • At least 20 per cent of the population in that particular area are facing extreme levels of hunger;
  • 30 per cent of the children in the same place are wasted, or too thin for their height; and
  • The death – or mortality – rate has doubled, from the average, surpassing two deaths per 10,000 daily for adults and four deaths per 10,000 daily for children.

‘Get on a plane’: Danish minister urged to meet Greenland coil scandal women (www.theguardian.com)

The Danish health minister should “get on a plane and visit” some of the thousands of women thought to be living with the consequences of being forcibly fitted with the contraceptive coil as children, Greenland’s gender equality minister has said....

I think you're right, but I think that undermining mostly happens because of skewed priorities.
