So my fear of sharks has gotten better, and I don’t quite understand why.

Curious 🏳️‍⚧️

But anyhow, you’ve probably found me because you’ve seen one of my totally inconspicuous comments

I’m open to chat about these and other related things over on Matrix

miss_brainfarts,

Hell, Lutris can even set up the original 1989 Sim City for you. Seeing that game on modern display sizes and resolutions is quite something

miss_brainfarts,

The first Dark Souls is pretty clunky compared to modern games though, to be fair

miss_brainfarts,

Yeah, I don’t remember there being any pointers about equip load. On one hand it makes perfect sense, put heavy armor on and you’re slower. But on the other hand, it’s a video game, so many players wouldn’t expect it and then spend hours trying to figure out why their controller rumbles when they roll

miss_brainfarts,

I do like the mechanic though. Really forces you to adapt your playstyle. Some enemies are slow enough for it to not matter, and then with others it might actually be better to take some armor off, so you can dodge their attacks better.

miss_brainfarts,

This is where the Heroic Games Launcher comes in, it only downloads the game itself, no Epic Games Launcher to be seen

miss_brainfarts,

I had one big problem with VLC, in that it could not figure out which of my monitors I wanted the video to run fullscreen on. That was infuriating to the point I switched to MPV, and I’m very happy with it

miss_brainfarts,

I was wondering where that issue came from

miss_brainfarts,

As much as I hate him, a large majority of the games that are given away on that platform are fully DRM-free, and that’s pretty damn cool

miss_brainfarts,

Sadly, no

miss_brainfarts,

Others have said all the important things, but I wanted to add that there are things that Android always tunnels through a VPN, like internet connectivity checks.

So even with Always-ON and Block Connections, this will still ignore a VPN

miss_brainfarts,

One of those times where it sounded perfectly correct in my head, whoops

miss_brainfarts,

I recently discovered Image Toolbox, it has the best editing capabilities of any FOSS Android app I’ve seen so far. That being said, if developing RAWs is something you need as well, I don’t think there exists anything besides Google’s Snapseed and Lightroom mobile.

As for taking pictures, I quite enjoy OpenCamera, but there’s not much else than that.

miss_brainfarts,

As far as I know, it’s all we have right now

Did tiktok change something?

I have friends that send me tiktok links via whatsapp and then they ask questions about it like “what do you think, scam or not”. I used to open them with cookies rejected in ddg browser but now it pretends to freeze after 4 seconds of play, then it says that i must open it in the app and replaces the “play” button with...

miss_brainfarts,

There exists a frontend called Proxitok, but I can’t comment on how well it works or what it can do. The LibRedirect addon for Firefox can redirect you to the instance of your choosing.

Great addon in general, do check it out if you don’t know it already.

miss_brainfarts,

A very stupid gamer lesbian with a dash of chaos activist, that sounds about right

miss_brainfarts,

Firefox (at least on Android), actually violates the GDPR for connecting to Adjust without user consent.

So no need to look further for any privacy shenanigans, this is unbelievably disappointing, coming from Mozilla.

miss_brainfarts,

Not common enough, when you look at the small list of apps that support it

miss_brainfarts,

Most of them, that’s fair. But I do see a distinct lack of email apps supporting it.

miss_brainfarts,

Meanwhile I use a monitor with a max brightness of 250nits, and I still have it set to its absolute minimum.

I can’t even imagine how just a short flash of 400 would feel to me

miss_brainfarts,

Oh yeah, that reminds me I wanted to try out A Tale of Two Wastelands. And I see there’s a lot of mods bringing textures, models and even animations from Fallout 4 to NV and 3? That could make for a great experience

miss_brainfarts,

„Me not having worked during that time quite literally means this time isn’t anyone’s business“

miss_brainfarts,

Oh, we’ve been through this though. Which other platform will ever have the cash to be a real contender here?

miss_brainfarts,

Noyb is publishing their articles in both German and English. Good source for news on the latest legal fuckeries of Big Tech and the like

miss_brainfarts,

Kinda sounds like it doesn’t like whatever your phine is doing to optimize background battery usage

miss_brainfarts,

Juan on his way to check out another balcony

miss_brainfarts,

It’s a pretty helpful tool, but I still prefer running an LLM locally, even though it’ll take a while to answer, then

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

miss_brainfarts,

You know why the person themselves is the important part of this equation?

Because they know what tools to use for which purpose.
For example, GIMP is only now getting non-destructive editing through adjustment layers, which is such an indispensable feature for important projects

miss_brainfarts, (edited )

They make things so much easier, having to make copies of every layer every time just to keep the original in case you need to re-do something half an hour later is super annoying.

Especially if you do multiple different things with a layer. Do you really have the patience to make backuo copies of a layer after every little edit you apply to it?

And then let’s say step 2 of 5 didn’t turn out like you want. Backup copies or not, you still have to re-do everything from 2 to 5 because of GIMPs destructive nature as of right now

miss_brainfarts,

It’s going to be part of the 3.0 release, after what feels like an eternity. The 2.99 dev release has it already, I might try that

miss_brainfarts,

The encryption can’t be end-to-end anyway. If you send messages between services with different encryption protocols, then you trust Beeper to decrypt your message mid-transit, to then re-encrypt it with the protocol of the recipient.

miss_brainfarts,

The whole point of the Beeper App is to let them handle everything, though.

And even if you self-host, you’re still breaking encryption and have to make sure everything is properly secured.

miss_brainfarts,

Be so nice to notify your contacts about breaking e2ee then, will ya

miss_brainfarts,

It’s nice that the option exists, I didn’t know that. But I have to say, I’m still not a fan of the overall concept of bridges

miss_brainfarts,

reports of building with 16GB and an i7 taking 20 minutes

Which generation i7 though

miss_brainfarts,

You know what, I respect it. Knows what he wants, while being quick to correct any assumptions

miss_brainfarts,

To think that I have lived years without knowing about those little features like combining title and menu bar to save space

miss_brainfarts,

Technically… Yeah no, better not think too hard about it

miss_brainfarts,

Peer pressure from people that don’t even exist anymore, huh.

Well tough luck, the only pressure this aroace girl will succumb to is a sale on her favourite garlic bread

miss_brainfarts,

How about when the number goes up and has a real-time effect on the world you play in, showing you the fruit of your labour growing as you progress further and further?

miss_brainfarts,

Imagine your tongue eating part of what you try to catch, to then poop straight down your throat

miss_brainfarts,

It’s the absolutely-proprietary package in the AUR, don’t know if it exists on other distros
