tuckerm, to opensource

Does anyone know the status of ? The website (funkwhale.audio) has been down for a couple days now. @opensource

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That site links to advertisements for a VPN now…

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Part of the spirit of open source is that commercial distribution be allowed. So there’s no issue with doing this.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Are you kidding? Think about all the skilled contributors that currently work on emulators, do you not think that some of them would switch to working on re-compiling games? And I agree there are probably weird platforms that it wouldn’t be easy for, but anything x86 is going to be much more trivial. I mean, someone was even reverse-engineering Super Mario 64, re-coding the entire game. The original source code and ability to use the code without getting sued would make things so much easier. Yeah, not every game would be done, but the big titles would be.

As far as emulating the rest, access to the source code would make it far, far simpler to figure out compatibility issues and make sure that every game is actually playable.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah but I feel like the spirit of open source is still to allow it imo. First point on the Open Source Definition: opensource.org/osd

From the AGPL:

b) Requiring preservation of specified reasonable legal notices or author attributions in that material or in the Appropriate Legal Notices displayed by works containing it;

Requiring the use of a trademarked logo, you won’t allow the use of, doesn’t seem very reasonable to me.

Yes but I’d imagine it’s a cloud API if it’s paid, not a local API. While yes, you could use this to make a HA integration, it would never reach platinum status. The customer seems to he wanting them to open up the API calls the “Brain” makes to the cloud, to intercept them.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

There’s Tuya Cloudcutter now that can hack a lot of current devices wirelessly. It’s a good way to get cheap “open firmware” IoT devices.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m not sure they have, but there’s still so much stock of old firmware out there, there are even companies who straight up haven’t pushed an update for their devices yet. Maybe I’m having more luck because I’m Aussie? But even CostCo had a home-brand of bulbs they haven’t updated yet.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Nah got a bunch of bunnings stuff as well. The Arlec Grid Connect stuff works well, I got a smart plug with a USB that actually has a separate relay for the 5V.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

and for good reason

I’d love to hear that reasoning. Personally, I will avoid using a FOSS product if the documentation is terrible or non-existent. Obviously I have grace for mew or bleeding-edge projects. But I’ve avoided using some FOSS stalwarts simply because I don’t have the time to dedicate to trial and error learning.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That’s fair, thank you for explaining. I was going to say but forgot, this is assessing specifically for “openness” not ‘open source-ness’ though.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I zoomed in for the knife, and spotted the goomba.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

‘Resolutions’ called, it wants to build up a relationship between Janeway and Chakotay and then throw it away never to be heard from again.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Doesn’t the sun’s, and other star’s, magnetic field cause this phenomenon?

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I thought that it was canonical, at least in some series, that the viewscreen is a window that displays a 1x view of outside and any time they want to zoom in, or are hailed, if turns into a monitor? I swear there’s been multiple times where someone was sucked out of the bridge through it.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Gosh seeing that “rage” tv bug in the corner is nostalgic.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Does M-class include the requirement of having 1.0g (or near enough)? I didn’t know that. Does that mean the federation is only made up of planets where humans don’t look daft moving around? Or maybe it has something to do with production budgets… 🤔

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah I wasn’t judging at all mate. Just reminds me of my childhood, sneaking back up at night to watch the music videos :)

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I can’t downvote you from my instance, but you do realise it’s been pretty well-known, for at least a decade in certain circles, that YouTube specifically slows down on Firefox? I’m pretty sure you can test this yourself by changing user agents. So that hardly seems like a fair test of a browser’s speed.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

No it doesn’t? It uses Google.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If you haven’t played since relatively early in it’s release, I believe that was a bug that has now been fixed.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

No, it’s a mobile-only feature. On desktop the game only saves once the day ends, either via bed or exhaustion.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s the same these days with the f-slur and cishet folks getting ostracised for using it, at least where I live. I agree, I’ll happily call myself one but never the r-slur. It just gives people a free pass.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Ahh, that sweet yellow and black split screen 😌

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Hey @Thorned_Rose the last chapter of this video is called redscreen, are you David Plummer? lol

How about we don’t use the word nuke, in the context of military actions, unless actual nuclear weapons were involved? Because Israel is the one country on Earth that has them but hasn’t declared as such. And they have repeatedly threatened to use them on Gaza as some sort of act of god.

'LLM-free' is the new '100% organic' - Creators Are Fighting AI Anxiety With an ‘LLM-Free’ Movement (www.theatlantic.com)

As soon as Apple announced its plans to inject generative AI into the iPhone, it was as good as official: The technology is now all but unavoidable. Large language models will soon lurk on most of the world’s smartphones, generating images and text in messaging and email apps. AI has already colonized web search, appearing in...

You say this like destroying the technology wasn’t their way of targeting the systemic issue? Destroying expensive machinery has been used by labour time and again as a tactic to get the capitalist class to cough up.

princessnorah,

Capitalists have an answer to this, it’s called the Pinkertons…

As of last month, I can now, in fact, store my driver’s license on my phone. Can’t wait to use it for nights out with friends, no risk of losing my purse and the app even hides your address unless you specifically allow it, so no skeevy bartenders can read my address when they “card” me :)

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

And of course it shall always be the first kiss between a black woman and a white man in space on tv.

I cracked up a bit at this. That was a great write up, I didn’t know before about Desilu’s involvement in making that kiss happen and their earlier milestone, that’s quite cool.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Bisexual woman here, so I agree with you on the butts, but straight girls and gay men do exist.

Okay feminism time. In my opinion, the reason that dude’s look like potatoes in video games is most likely because of the gender disparities in the industry. There just isn’t anyone that looks at men from the perspective of attraction.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

While I don’t disagree with those points, I just don’t think the technical aspects are that much of the issue.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Ah, right you were explaining additional issues alongside it, sorry that was my bad reading comprehension!

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The difference comes when they actively block installation (just like Mint does).

Dude’s anti-Mint as well. From a different comment, seems like he works (or worked) for Ubuntu.

You know what seems more anti-consumer to me? Trash-talking your competition for making different choices to you with your FOSS they’re legally allowed to re-distribute with any changes they like.

It’s almost like if people don’t prefer those changes or something then they won’t be popular? Oh wait, Mint is hugely popular…

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

thanks for making me snort! happy cake day :)

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You should check out what the Asahi Linux project has been able to do with the ARM Macs already, it’s pretty impressive.

princessnorah, (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Let’s get even more technical with MacOS X then. Which, btw, doesn’t exist anymore as macOS 11 was released in 2020 (tho it still maintains the BSD-legacy in the same way Windows 10 does the NT legacy). It is based on the NeXTSTEP operating system from NeXT Computers, who Apple bought in the 90s to famously also bring Steve Jobs back into the fold. The initial release of NeXTSTEP occurred in 1989, pre-dating Windows and Linux…

There are plenty of people who need a better editor than GIMP considering how long it’s gone without a major refresh (this isn’t a whinge it’s been over a decade). For anyone that actually cares about their sanity there’s Krita, that actually tries to build a program for professionals.

Edit: Let alone Krita can actually be used by schools, while GIMP isn’t because of the name.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The only one that seems like a FOSS zealot here is you my friend…hope you learn how to be kinder to folks during conversations.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Oh thanks for the heads up, I wasn’t aware! I’ll have to check it out when it drops :)

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Except your “logical conclusion” missed the most important part of their comment. Here, let me fix it for you:

That all expressions of sexual desire (“between two consenting adults”) are expressions of love, that all expressions of love are equally valid, and that no expression of love should be repressed.

I agree with this statement, and I think most people would. You’re right as well that almost no one would agree with your thought experiment, as it opens up the argument that rape and sexual assault are “expressions of love” when they very much are not. I don’t think that was an accident on your part though, considering your account is less than a day old and you decided to come straight to an lgbtq community and participate in the manner in which you have.

Oh no, I guess I’m a hedonist ¯_(ツ)_/¯

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Okay, and? The person you replied to you is talking about ISO versus ANSI layouts… which define the rest of the keys on a keyboard. They were talking about QWERTY. So clearly there are other keyboard layouts that matter.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve had a few trans boyfriends, and I was still attracted to them when they took their binders off ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also, there’s nothing preventing them from stopping hormones if they start to grow bigger than they are comfortable with.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Generally you can get the emotional effects at a lower dose than would cause extensive breast growth. They could adjust dosages accordingly.

If it makes you feel any better, same username but different instance, so you didn’t get any of the UI (web or app) flags to show you they were OP. I woulda totally made the same mistake.

it’s mostly just internet lingo.

Spend more time around people under 25, while they’re around other people who are also under that age. I hear it a lot.

Edit: To be clear, I’m not even under 25. Just spend a lot of time with people who are. Makes you feel old when younger folks ‘code-switch’ and use different language choices with you…
