prole,

Oh great. Can’t wait for Sony or something to come in and completely ruin the IP with a movie or some shit.

prole,

Man, the way that headline begins, I thought he had died.

On a macabre, but related, note: how long after Gabe’s death before Steam goes public and turns to shit? I’d give it 6 months.

prole,

Does the bird one actually work? Nature can get pretty loud, I could see that being an issue.

prole,

I second EndeavourOS. My first distro and it’s been a great experience. I’ve felt no desire to switch.

Steam/games have worked great.

prole,

Fair enough… It’s been nearly a month since I commented here so I don’t remember the exact situation, but if having a lot of updates was an issue, then yeah maybe not EndeavourOS. There may be LTS versions, but since it’s based on Arch, I’m not sure. I personally don’t mind it, and have yet to have a single issue with an update “breaking” something (though I have Timeshift set up to take a snapshot before updating just in case), but I guess

I could see someone being annoyed by having the little thing pop-up to tell you how many things you could update, but I kind of like it I think. It kinda feels like I’m very slowly, incrementally, making my laptop better, albeit usually in ways I can’t even perceive at the time.

But hey, everyone has their preferences. That’s why there’s a billion distros to choose from.

prole,

Adaptive triggers begin as a hardware feature. Steam Deck can’t emulate that without changing the triggers out completely (if it’s possible at all).

I imagine the internal motors for the crazy precise haptic feedback is also hardware level.

prole,

I wish more PlayStation games would allow use of motion controls. I’ve gotten used to enabling it with Steam Deck to actually make fps games playable for me on controller, then when I switch to ps5 and start tilting the controller for precise aiming and nothing happens…

Steam input, and their customization options for controllers on Steam Deck (or I guess in Steam in general) are incredible, and something I don’t see mentioned nearly enough.

prole, (edited )

Yup, works just fine on my Steam Deck if anyone was wondering. Been years since I’ve played the game… The second one never pulled me in like the first.

Edit: Quick note if anyone is having issues, I switched ti GE-Proton before even starting it up for the first time and it worked so I never changed it.

prole,

I think i may have forgotten to mention that I started out trying it with GE-Proton as I’ve had better luck in the past with brand new “unsupported” (per Steam) games, and it worked with GE-Proton.

prole,

RoR soundtrack is incredible…

But I might have to go with Hotline Miami as the best. Or at least in the top 3 for me.

prole,

I like the idea of this game (and series) a lot. I really have NO interest in a 2D side-scroller, though.

They were telling you that Risk of Rain 2 is almost identical to the first game, but it is a 3rd person shooter in full 3D, and not a 2D sidescroller. So the one issue you mentioned is no longer an issue.

At least that’s what I thought they meant.

prole,

Ahhh ok, right. So it has nothing to do with being a 2D sidescroller. Why lie?

prole,

Prima games… I always knew Brady Games had the better strategy guides!

prole,

Same. Every time I’ve tried I just can’t get past the tutorial. Maybe if I take the other person’s advice and turn off enemies at first…

prole,

I think I’ve started learning that I’m kind of ok with that barrier to entry… I mean, it’s pretty fucking low. It’s not that difficult to understand if you are willing to take 5 mins to learn how it works.

Don’t want to be gatekeeper-y or anything, but maybe if you can’t pass that simple test, then the overall discourse is better off without you in it.

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

prole,

Maybe not everywhere, because then it wouldn’t be nearly as special, but I absolutely adored the “asynchronous multiplayer” aspects of Death Stranding.

Viewing the “strand contracts” tab and looking at how many other actual humans used and “liked” the infrastructure you created, or helped to create. Creating contracts with players who seem to appreciate your work, so that you see more of their structures, and they see more of yours. Only a couple examples. Trying to find the most optimal place for a bridge, or watchtower so that other players will appreciate it and give you “likes.” That nice feeling of warmth you get when you finish building a road that others had started…

Just the whole freaking thing fits so well into the “we’re all in this together, even if we’re (forcibly) isolated” message the game is conveying. Working together with real people that you will never directly see or speak to, in order to make an incredibly arduous journey a bit easier for all. Amazing.

At least I think that was one of the messages, Kojima can be cryptic at times lol.

Again, I wouldn’t want it to become the next “climb the tower to reveal part of the map” mechanic, and get ruined. You can’t just shoe-horn it in, it has to make sense in context.

prole,

You should look into Steam Input (if you have a Steam Deck, you may have already messed with it), but it allows a mind-blowing amount of control customization for any game you’re launching through Steam. Most games will also have community presets you can easily use.

Inverting view or turning on gyro controls is trivial. It goes shockingly deep. You can create radial menus if you want, it’s wild.

  • prole,

You could still play most (if not all) ps2 games without a memory card. You can’t save your game obviously, but nothing stopping you from playing.

    prole,

For me that’s the two intro screens for ps1. I can still hear it.

‘Call of Duty’ Doesn’t Just Depict Bad History—It’s Pro-War Propaganda (progressive.org)

I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...

    prole,

You forget that literal children play these games

    prole,

What a brain rot take. They are children, my guy. I know you think you’re the smartest 12 year old in you class, but not everyone is as clever as you .

Or maybe this is just you telling everyone that you know don’t know how propaganda works.

    prole,

Sure… Maybe not number 1 (I think Arcane may have been better), but below Sonic Boom? Yeah, no.

    prole,

And Sonic Boom deserves to be higher than it because…?

    prole,

A lot of the development for Proton has also been community-based. Aside from whatever Steam has done to directly improve Proton, just creating the Steam Deck, and SteamOS has brought so much more attention and focus to improving it to an extent that probably wouldn’t have happened otherwise. It gave people a reason to volunteer their time to improve it.

    prole,

Why would they protect their competitor’s IP without formal request?

    prole,

Have you ever browsed the Nintendo eShop? It’s like 50% shovelware.

If they have a screening process for their shop, it’s absolute trash.

    prole,

people remember that games are supposed to be good

I’ve played a lot of great games in the past few years 🤷‍♂️

Backwards compatibility is the best feature of Xbox, and I don't understand why Sony is so far behind on this

When I got the XSX recently, it was so I can play Starfield when it comes out. That was basically the only reason. I did not realize the extensive backwards compatibility that this thing has. But since getting it, I’ve been playing FF13 trilogy, Fable games, Dragon Age series, Lost Odyssey, etc. Basically all games of note...

    prole,

Yeah. I also have a Steam Deck, if I want to play an old PS1 or PS2 game and it isn’t on PS+ then I’ll just emulate it.

I will say though, there are a few PS3 games that have yet to be remastered that are kind of a blind spot, but that list is getting shorter.

    prole,

I have all there of those on my PC/Steam Deck. They’re not really XBox exclusives.

    prole,

I wasn’t being disingenuous… I can and have played all of those games and I have never owned an XBox in my life. That’s not exclusive.

    prole,

Like a Dragon (Yakuza 7) is the only Yakuza game, to date, that’s a JRPG. At least in the way most people think of JRPG (turn based combat).

They’re all great games, just wanted to point out that only the one, so far, is a turn-based JRPG.

I think it would probably make for a great first JRPG experience. Persona 5 is pretty accessible, but it’s very anime and tropey. That said, I’m not a fan of anime and absolutely loved the game. Either would be a great starting point.

    prole, (edited )

If you’re enjoying yourself while you play, then the time was well spent. Like you said, try to remember that nobody is making you play every game you start to 100% completion, that’s an entirely self-imposed rule.

That said, for me personally, the length of a game is generally irrelevant to whether or not I will enjoy that game. If I enjoy a game, I enjoy that game. If it’s long, it’s long. If not, cool.

    prole,

To me, enjoyability is completely separate from game length. It’s more about enjoyment per hour of gameplay imo.

    prole,

I kind of feel bad for people who are only motivated by things like trophies, or feeling the need to 100% a game. If I’m not enjoying a game, I’m not going to force myself to play it longer because of some strange need inside me to 100% complete every game I start. If I don’t like playing a game, I will just stop playing it.

    prole,

Came here to say Tinykin. Great game that nobody ever seems to talk about. Hard to recommend irl as well since the name makes it sound like a kid’s edutainment title or something.

How often have games made you do a double take in real life? (i.imgur.com)

Maybe you see a plant you have to collect in game or a rock wall that looks different. What items have you caught out of the corner of your eye that you realized was just your brain so focused on looking for things in a game that you saw it IRL and made you double take?

    prole,

Holy shit, I’m not the only one! So weird! None of the other powers have that affect on me, only the ascension ability.

    prole,

Disney, at least back in the VHS, and (probably early) DVD days, would purposefully keep their titles in the “vault” and only release a handful of titles at a time for a limited time window.

What it did was create artificial scarcity, and when they put out an “anniversary edition” of Cinderella or whatever, they cashed in.

Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?

Just as with books, movies, plays etc the past holds a treasure trove of amazing experiences. Unless you have a lot more free time than I do it’s unlikely you’ve played anywhere near the majority of the classics. Let’s get out those pink sunnies and compare notes on some of our favourite releases....

    prole,

Oh man, I remember when Soldier of Fortune came out. It was the first FPS (that I was aware of at least) that had dismemberment. I remember my mind become completely blown after shooting a guy’s legs off with a shotgun.

Nowadays, it’s nothing special, but back then it was insane.

    prole,

I just picked up Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (the original, not the Remaster) again. Installed it on my Steam Deck along with DSFix after a year or so of scrolling past it and seeing the “unsupported” icon. Looked it up on ProtonDB and apparently it works just fine.

What a game. The level design is still unmatched imo

    prole,

Have you tried something like xpadder where it just maps the keyboard keys used in the game to your controller buttons? I’ve had to use that from time to time way back with older games before controller support got better. Not ideal, but seems to work usually when all else fails.

I’m not sure if/how it works exactly since I mostly do my “PC” gaming on Steam Deck these days, but if it’s possible to use Steam Input on Windows, you may be able to do something similar right in Steam.

    prole,

Nice, I’m glad I could be of some help. Let me know if you get it to work.

Steam Input is amazing, it’s one of my favorite features of the Steam Deck that nobody really talks about. The amount of customization you can do for controller layouts for individual games is incredible. You can even create radial menus if you want.
