MangoPenguin, to opensource in Repository Overhaul in new F-Droid Client 1.20

Their SSL cert expired, must be one of those days where the renewal job failed for no reason like mine sometimes do lol

Eh, I don’t like better support for 3rd party repos. I’d rather devs meet the criteria to put their apps in the main repo. The standards are high for a reason.

gazby,

How does enabling third-party repo use prevent one from using the F-Droid repo?

I’d say continued improvement of third-party support suggests the main repo could be losing its value to users. There are apps in there over a decade old without even an anti-feature warning.

delirious_owl,
@delirious_owl@discuss.online avatar

The effect is on the devs, not the users. If its lower friction for a dev’s users to install their app from their own third party app, then the devs are less likely to strip out anti features like reliance on third party trackers because they don’t have to do that if they host their own repo

gazby,

I agree that what you’ve said is correct, but I don’t see how it would impede someone using the official repos. If telemetry is of major concern, there are alternative approaches (e.g. PiHole).

    Chewy7324,

    I don’t see how the ability of users to actually know which repository an app comes from and change the repository makes it more likely for devs to not remove anti-features.

    I’ve had this exact issue a month ago where an app was available in official F-Droid repos and Izzy’s and I didn’t know which repo F-Droid selected by default.

    Lowering the barrier of entry for dangerous options is an important UX decision.

    Its the same reason it requires so many clicks to bypass a cert issue in browsers.

    Installing from third party repos is dangerous. It should be possible, but not easy

    MonkderDritte, to opensource in Repository Overhaul in new F-Droid Client 1.20

    Still no export/import of repos?

    CowsLookLikeMaps,

    Did you open an issue for this on GitLab?

    Nice! Very useful changes

    Schedar,

    Thank you!

    Also like that the iOS app privacy section says:

    Data Not Collected The developer does not collect any data from this app

    qyron, to privacy in I has come to my attention that some users have never heard of F-droid. F-droid is a free software app store for android

    Been using Fdroid to the point where my first boot into a new phone is:

    Open chrome > download fdroid > open settings > uninstall/disable every single application I can > open fdroid > install all the relevant apps I require for making my phone useful

    I’m just waiting for a small life upgrade in order to be able to support some app developers; it will be money better spent than using the standard google apps.

    Something worth noting is that F-Droid is both an app to download other apps but they also maintains a repository of apps. You can use alternative store apps (like Droid-ify) with the F-Droid repository OR you could use the F-Droid app with a different repository (like IzzyOnDroid). You can mix and match to meet your needs.

    I use the Droid-ify app with the F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, microG, NewPipe, and Collabora repositories.

    Once you start down this rabbit hole, give Obtanium a look.

    Squizzy,

    I just have the basic f droid app, the layout is awful and confusing. Is there one you suggest?

    monobot,

    I think he did suggest droid-ify with fdroid repo: github.com/Droid-ify/client

    Looks good, I will try it out. You have it in F-droid :)

    What sort of things do people use RSS readers for these days?

    Red_sun_in_the_sky,
    @Red_sun_in_the_sky@lemmy.ml avatar

    I use em for news feeds. Blogs. Its handy. Also widgets are nice to have on home screen for feeds.

    kevincox,
    @kevincox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Reading feeds.

    Mostly blogs and videos. Some comics. Some odds and ends like notifications for various things.

    Safipok,

    Peertube channels, app/service development/updates, kick starter updates, nonprofit news, general news most importantly comics(and blogs)!

    Achyu,

    I use it to follow news updates, blogs, updates of apps that I like, some youtube channels and lemmy/reddit communities.
    I’m new to using rss feeds, but it seems to reduce the time to open pages on the browser to check for updates.

    For example:
    Feed with post titles and content from c/ Word of the Day:
    lemmy.world/feeds/c/wotd.xml?
    Lemmy has built-in rss feeds.

    I also use the FdroidUpdate subreddit to follow updates. Is there a direct rss feed to follow?

    Notifies me of updates for Jerboa:
    github.com/dessalines/jerboa/releases.atom

    The same for PipePipe:
    codeberg.org/NullPointerException/…/releases.rss

    PipePipe displays rss feed urls of yt channels. So I follow some local yt channels.

    rss-bridge.org/bridge01/ - Helps to get rss feeds for services/websites that don’t have an rss feed of their own

    News websites like The Guardian and The Hindu(Indian newspaper, not a religious one tho) seem to have rss feeds for specific topics and main pages.

    bizdelnick, to opensource in Read You, A modern rss reader for Android.

    Tried using it. Terrible UX. Lots of small annoying things that make the app usage very uncomfortable.

    foremanguy92_, to opensource in Newpipe is getting updates on fdroid again and seem like will be getting updates for the foreseeable future as the issue stopping it is solved.

    Personally I use LibreTube as it has a really beautiful ui and without VPNs proxies the connections trough piped servers

    fl42v,

    Is it stable now? I’ve used it for a while last year, and the experience wasn’t exactly pleasant. On the good side, they had lots of useful features like properly rendering comments with replies and stuff, sponsorblock and channel tabs, but it used to crash a lot for any reason. May try it out again, although newpipe (or, more precisely, tubular, which is yet another attempt at sponsorblock which is still alive) kinda has everything I personally need currently.

    thequantumcog,
    @thequantumcog@lemmy.world avatar

    The proxy is unstable. I just disable the piped proxy and it works perfectly.

    foremanguy92_,

    But in this case I suggest you to use vpn

    N0x0n, (edited )

    Have yout tried with “Use HLS”? It’s a known issue and will be fixed ASAP

    thequantumcog,
    @thequantumcog@lemmy.world avatar

    Even before the HLS bug, libretube was finky, I think newpipe also doesn’t use proxy so I’m fine with it.

    sleeperdouge,

    Libretube would have replaced the youtube app for me if not for how slow their instances are for me. So far I did not see any crashes but the pages would sometimes not load and would require you to change instances. I think the cause may have been that the instances are hosted far away from me geographically and that my current internet connection has been having issues for non-mainstream websites.

    fl42v,

    I used to select piped instances via libretube (mobile Firefox lets you install non-approved extensions by making your own collection and choosing that in the browser). Basically I’d go to the extension’s settings page, ping the available instances and choose some of the fastest ones. Although, it’s not at all convenient.

    Been using it for more then a year, really good app.

    seaQueue,
    @seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

    Have you had issues with entire feeds spontaneously marking themselves unread? I finally uninstalled readyou after fighting with that one for a year - it’s not particularly good UX when the app decides that 80+ posts in a feed are new again and worthy of a notification.

    RovingFox,
    @RovingFox@infosec.pub avatar

    hmm, i don’t know, I don’t have notifications on for it. I read from it when I get the need and what is recent.

    uzay, to opensource in Newpipe is getting updates on fdroid again and seem like will be getting updates for the foreseeable future as the issue stopping it is solved.

    I recommend using Newpipe’s own fdroid repo. You’ll get the updates much faster there when something breaks

    FutileRecipe,

    Arcticons
    You can look them up in F-Droid, they have 3-4 versions, dark, light, material you and one that changes depending on the time of the day(dark/light).
    PS: it does not work on any Launcher, it has instructions for compatible launchers(20+?) within the app.

    kambusha,

    Thanks!

    It has a great design, which I often find missing from FOSS apps. However I still like Feeder better.

    Altomes,

    Same, I also couldn’t get it to read the OPML from Feeder but hell yeah on the effort, looks slick just not for me

    LemmyQuest,

    Try to export again in feeder as sometimes it generate bad file.

    (Former feeder user advice)

    Altomes,

    Yeah, I did 3 so idk. I’ll try again later

    Salix,

    Different use. Feeder only works locally.

    Read You can sync with multiple types of RSS servers. I love using it with FreshRSS. Great for people who use multiple devices.

    LucidDaemon,

    I just tried to import the OPML file from feeder and it doesn’t seem to work.

    Salix,

    That’s because Feeder does their OPML file differently. Their OPML file includes Feeder settings. You have to wait for v0.9.13 release that makes it compatible. It’ll be the next release. Current release is v0.9.12
