A controversial new experimental drug, extracted from the brains of elderly individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, has become highly sought after by the nation’s elite. Known as “Sweet Memories”, the drug is said to provide an unparalleled euphoric sensation without any side effects. Despite being non-addictive, several users, who preferred to remain anonymous, confessed that they could not get enough of it. Reports have surfaced that some elderly patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are voluntarily selling their brain tissue in hopes of financially supporting their families. “My family gets some money, and I don’t have to suffer through a miserable life. It’s a win-win situation.” said 67-year-old Jena, who agreed to have her brain harvested for an undisclosed sum paid by the royal family.
Jesus. The worst thing about this is that one might actually believe it for a short time. I did for a glance of a moment before recognising that this had to be satire. Something good: satire is nod dead yet :D
If it wasn’t for the third panel height difference, this would be a perfect loss representation. Since it was made in 1994, I can only assume that this is what Buckley traced over for his comic.
I believe it was because it was such a weird and dramatic shift in tone from the regular CAD content, which was not all that great to begin with. You probably had to be there (I wasn’t).
Hbomberguy did a video on it that explains it well I think: youtu.be/TebCHHCw9rY
Xkcd did something similar but afaik nobody made a big deal about it, only that Randall kept the depressed tone for quite a long time, after which people started to complain
Depends how old you are, this is quite an old meme so it’s possible you’re too young to be very familiar with its origin, but I just don’t know your age
Honestly, I am probably exactly the right age for this and I just learned what it was a couple months ago. Because the format is so bland it just blends in with the doom scrolling, I never bothered to find out what it came from and most certainly never even noticed any of its derivatives were trying to be the loss meme instead of making some mediocre point or art.
