Aaah yeeah instead looking forward to Fallout 8 and Elder Scrolls 36 I need that fresh Todd slop badly

Good! This is a stone off my chest. However I wouldn’t trust Todd to commit to that.

Bethesda can't do it. They aren't capable of a decent storyline. Their games are frankly beautifully done mostly empty boxes for people to create their own stories and mods in.

Hell, the Skyrim map is just masterfully done. If you follow the roads it seems big and expansive, and the cliffs/mountains exist to force the player to move around them. But there are lots of little paths and ways to shorten distances.

But a narrative driven experience like fo1 and 2? They don't have the skill.

FlihpFlorp,

I always like to think of Skyrim (and fallout to a lesser degree) as essentially a head canon driven gmod

Maybe I’m a vampire who’s powerful to drain dragons (highly recommend sacrosanct) or maybe I lead a small army with no armor making me play strategic

I cannot remember the last time I played the main quest for the quest and not unlocking some side content

brucethemoose,

Is that really the case with Starfield though?

I didn’t really get into Fallout 76 (immediately bounced off a coop attempt), but I do hear its map is pretty good.

kbin_space_program,

They screwed up before with automated map generation, and admitted as much.

For Oblivion, they admitted that the Aelyid ruins were mostly computer generated, as well as a lot of the map. Which is why the ruins in particular were so forgettable.

brucethemoose,

Cyrodil and The Shivering Isles were a blast though. Even playing BG3, with how amazing and stupendously huge it is, I didn’t feel that same sense of open scale wandering about (which is why I find their approach in SF so baffling)

I just don’t see what needs to be “remade” about them?

Veraxus,

Exactly the same in every way, but modern graphics.

But only if Tim Cain was overseeing it and Todd Howard was not involved in way whatsoever.

Beyond maybe some better UI scaling and high DPI options, I still don’t feel they need a remake.

If you want spiritual successors with moden engines, there are plenty of good ones. The Wasteland series is a good option. There are other indie titles too, like Underrail.

MeanEYE,

Ooh, you should definitely check AtomRPG. It’s a true labor of love.

wesker,
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I bought it last month, actually! I just haven’t had the time to crack into it yet.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

I loved it. It’s not at the level of Fallout2 when it comes to story telling but it’s very decent. Especially considering team size. But they have poured so much love and effort into it. Well worth the play. Also they did make the game react to main character, so it’s worth replaying couple of times.

Gradually_Adjusting,
@Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world avatar

I really don’t think Bethesda’s style ever suited Fallout, so I’m happy to hear they’re not planning it. Originally these games were novelistic, bitingly witty, and thematically coherent. It should have gone to a developer who isn’t obsessed with crafting loops, simulationism for its own sake, and common denominator storytelling.

Naz,

[Meeting screeches to a halt]

“What do you mean they don’t need to be remade, Tom? How are we supposed to charge $60 for a 20-year-old game we have the rights to, then?”

AlbinoPython,

They need paid mods.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

If you ask Todd, they need to be always online with atom store built-in. I mean how else is he gonna milk more $$$ out of fans.

inclementimmigrant,

Just modernize the graphics, clean up the audio a bit, update the cut scenes, maybe update the inventory management. That’s about it.

bjmllr, to pcgaming in Fallout 1 and 2 won’t be getting remade, Todd Howard says

they should release them as freeware like arena and daggerfall

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Hey here’s a game a lot of people are excited for, near unlimited potential for dlc, and you just have to do better than the only existing alternative.

Oh, it’s only going to be wildly profitable instead of insanely? Shut it down.

Guntrigger,

This article makes me wonder if it was becoming insanely expensive to produce. It always seemed like an expensive choice to sign Rod Humble to make his own studio from scratch in California. They are probably very glad to get that off the expenses.

jivandabeast, to games in Paradox is closing its Tectonic studio following Life by You’s cancellation

Damn, I didn’t know it got cancelled. Was pretty exciting to see a new player in the life sim genre.

Hope this isn’t the same fate that’s in store for Paralives

shadowedcross,

I think it’s much less likely with Paralives since the people in charge are the same people who are passionate about it. It isn’t beholden to shareholders like PDX is.

Sorry, there’s only one Uncharted film, it’s only fifteen minutes long and it’s a lot better than the Tom Holland version.

Gaming is going to get worst thanks to these shameless executive leeches trying to please Shareholder Daddy and get his approval. They need to stop lying about infinite growth, ripping off the bandage is the fastest way to please Shareholders. The second faster way would be to enjoy the savings from jettisoning overcompensated executives. Purging studios is just a short term solution.

dinckelman, to pcgaming in Embracer is closing Alone in the Dark studio Pieces Interactive

Yet another victim to pointless capitalism. Embracer are still no more than a cancer on the industry, trying to leech as much money as possible, while they still can

inclementimmigrant,

Yup. Just the crappy AAA gaming industry being their shitty selves yet again since they’re not true only ones by far screwing over developers to satisfy shareholder insanity for unlimited growth.

So Xbox bought the studio about 3 years ago and then just went ‘nah, not profitable.’ Fuck Xbox.

I’ve been through a similar process (as an employee) and all I can keep thinking is “Fuck you.” after every sentence this guy says.
