Tywele,

I was wondering why Ecosia didn’t give me any search results yesterday. Well, now I know.

TheAnonymouseJoker,

I noticed it starting months ago with Startpage, and yesterday with DuckDuckGo. Always fall back to Searx. And since I know the former two are just Google/Bing proxies, I NEVER search anything on them that may be questionable or shady or can be judgemental in the future.

geography082,

Ahhhh my self hosted SearXNG is inmune HA!

possiblylinux127,

Its a known issue

Jumuta,

startpage was fine for me

classic,

It seemed to be out last night for me. Came up with no results for some really basic searches

electro1,
@electro1@infosec.pub avatar

why don’t they just build their own indexer and AI crawler… Brave is newer yet surpassed both of them

Scolding0513,

yes, this is why I love Brave search! the only privacy search engine with their own indexer.

Tangent5280,

shill harder somewhere else

Scolding0513,

cry harder somewhere else

kionite231,

But why? DDG isn’t that private either!

Tangent5280,

correct, but brave is not only shittier, but it is also an active saboteur to the cause.

QuentinCallaghan,

Yes I had. DuckDuckGo was crippled as Bing was down today.

It’s back now.

Somebody really Binged it up.

Time to ditch duckduckBing

WreckingBANG,

Why? Because it is down or because you just noticed that is is basicly just a Bing-Proxy?

Redacted,
@Redacted@lemmy.world avatar

Probably because it’s down. I for one am surprised they have no failover for when Bing goes down.

Crack0n7uesday,

I’m more surprised bing doesn’t have a fail over for whenever bing goes down.

land,
@land@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s my backup search engine. I use Brave and Searx as the main search engines.

jjlinux,

An individual with cultural galore over here. Great choices.

XTL,

Brave is a series scammer. Always has been, always will be.

land,
@land@lemmy.ml avatar

Brave search* sorry for the confusion. I use floorp as my main browser.

TranquilTurbulence,

Nah, just switched to searx for a day, and came back once DDG was up again.

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes. It even interrupted a flashing procedure of a device of mine and almost bricked it

InnerScientist,

How does a search engine being offline interrupt a device flashing?

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

Idk why it happened. Maybe the program uses that API to find new firmware versions. It was stuck at the beginning of the procedure

tetris11,
@tetris11@lemmy.ml avatar

Its quite embarrassing you’ve asked this, tbh. Obviously you’ve never run

dd if=$(while :; do curl bing.com/q=$RANDOM; done) of=/dev/sda1

and I think that’s sad.

possiblylinux127,

I want to do this now

invisiblegorilla,

Holy fuckshits. You crazy motherfucker.

ashaman2007,

Is this secure drive erasure 🤔🤔🤔

kionite231,

Saving it!

possiblylinux127,

Wait what?

GolfNovemberUniform,
@GolfNovemberUniform@lemmy.ml avatar

The flashing app detected the device. The next step was downloading firmware and it was stuck on it for minutes (usually it takes a second or two). I almost ended up rebooting the device (which could absolutely brick it) but fortunately it found the firmware. Then I tested DDG to see if it was up. I don’t really remember if it was but I think it was working for a few seconds

possiblylinux127,

Why was it pulling firmware from Bing? That’s seems strange

AbidingOhmsLaw,

Microsoft’s Bing API services (the source of DuckDuckGo’s search data) went down at approx 3am ET and has not yet returned to service. Bing, DuckDuckGo, CoPilot, ChatGPT and more are unable to use the Bing services so in turn are also not working or not working fully.

Jumuta,

huh, I thought ddg had its own indexer?

RmDebArc_5,
@RmDebArc_5@sh.itjust.works avatar

Only for the instant answers. The regular results are all bing

floofloof,

Ecosia was affected too. It’s Bing with trees.

pineapplelover,

Thought it was google with trees

ExtremeDullard,
@ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

CoPilot, ChatGPT and more are unable to use the Bing services so in turn are also not working or not working fully.

That’s sad, since one would logically expect any AI to get better if it loses access to Bing search results.

DerisionConsulting,

yes, everyone on earth.

Bing API is down, which has killed some things.

Scolding0513,

I thought Startpage used Google, not Bing?

tostiman,
@tostiman@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, me too

Treachery4524,

This definitely makes me confused. I thought their whole thing was that they were a proxy for google results??

Scolding0513,

maybe they use both,or maybe Bing was cheaper now
