BreakDecks,

Forfeited shares held as collateral for a loan should require paying a capital gains tax if you default on the loan.

BreakDecks,

A two percent wealth tax is actually a better idea than a lot of people here seem to think.

If you have $100B, you’d have to pay $2B every year that you hold that much wealth, and you’ll have to pay it in cash.

This would produce a lot of annual recurring tax revenue, and it would incentivize billionaires to hoard less paper capital if they don’t want to constantly be forking over billions in taxes.

The tax is beneficial, and so is the way around the tax.

Though we also need to tax their income more too.

BreakDecks,

If nobody told you it was Linux, you wouldn’t know. If boots straight into Steam. It’s as easy as using a Nintendo Switch.

But you can enter desktop mode to get a Plasma desktop, and you have root access, so if you know what you’re doing it’s a great Linux machine.

BreakDecks,

I have never met someone who has a specific hatred of rap music that wasn’t using it as a proxy to signal racial hatred.

Like the guy who answers “anything but rap” when asked what kind of music they like. You know exactly what they mean to say…

BreakDecks,

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m talking about people who single rap out or make it the butt of a tasteless joke.

If someone feels the need to joke that everyone who likes or makes rap should be executed, you really just need to take a look at the demographics that listen to or create rap music, and you get a distinct picture of what they don’t like about the rap community (spoiler: it isn’t the music).

And if you ask someone what they like to listen to, and they don’t give a real answer and single out rap as the only genre they dislike, they’re not actually telling you what they like or don’t like, they’re just taking a jab at part of Black culture for the sake of signalling their disapproval.

If you don’t like rap music aesthetically, it’s pretty easy to convey that without sounding like a racist by dismissing the entire genre as if the world would be a better place without it, because people notice when someone focuses their vitriol specifically at PoC cultural strongholds.

I personally don’t listen to much rap, and don’t consider it my style, but I’m sure has hell not going to insult it or the people who enjoy it, because I respect people’s aesthetic and cultural differences and don’t reflexive hate Blackness.

BreakDecks,

We literally have a global rise in violent fascism and multiple ongoing genocides, and TikTok is the worst thing you can think of?

BreakDecks,

At least Germany and Austria can deal with you when you try to spread it. If that feels authoritarian to you, good. Cry about it.

BreakDecks,

We could just make speech that directly glorifies or encourages violence illegal. Basically just an extension of laws against violent threats or speech that does direct harm.

It would be much harder to abuse such a restriction on speech, and it would cover all violent or genocidal movements without singling out a specific ideology.

One of the best ways around the first amendment is to throw away any notion of offensiveness or obscenity, and focus on victims. You can’t fraudulently shout “Fire!” in a crowded theatre because the people who get injured in the panic will be victims. You can’t possess child porn because minors have no right to grant sexual consent and the existence of such media further victimizes them. You can’t distribute private porn made with your partner without their permission for similar reasons: because your partner didn’t consent to it, and would be victimized by its distribution. You cannot threaten to assault or kill someone, or call for others to assault or kill someone, because it amounts to conspiracy to commit a violent crime.

None of these restrictions on speech focus on the speech being offensive, they focus on the speech having direct harmful consequences to others. It draws the line of where your rights end at where others’ rights begin.

I don’t see why we can’t extend this to cover inherently violent ideologies like Nazism, where glorification of it, by definition, is a call for violence against specific members of our society. If you celebrate the Holocaust and demand similar action today, the victims are the people who you are asking the state to murder. There’s no reason to tolerate that as free speech, because the people being targeted have the right not to be murdered. If it’s illegal to call for the murder of 1 person, why not make it illegal to call for the murder of millions of people?

BreakDecks,

I would rather they have to do it in the shadows, and be able to be dealt with if they show their faces in the light of day.

BreakDecks,

Because people use Twitch on Linux with a VPN? This seems kinda obvious…

BreakDecks,

I think the actual cause of this is outsourcing to China where you have no transparency as to who actually does the work. It’s nearly impossible to outsource to NK from inside the USA, but it’s pretty trivial to do it inside China.

My guess is that the work got outsourced twice with one Chinese middeman company keeping the difference.

BreakDecks,

I can’t quite tell what you’re “just saying”. Do you want any video of a crime to be made illegal, or do you want child pornography on primetime TV?

BreakDecks,

North Korea is a Democratic People’s Republic.

BreakDecks,

Strange to use yourself as the person creating child pornography in this hypothetical.

BreakDecks,

Boards of Canada is a very popular IDM artist, and they’re the third result down from the top.

BreakDecks,

Amazon fresh always gets those prices completely wrong.

BreakDecks,

I used to have an open public SIP address that would ring a home phone, complete with a retro answering machine, but nobody uses SIP…

BreakDecks,

Yeah, I mean nobody uses SIP as an open protocol with email-like addresses. You could call me with an unregistered softphone. It would have been way cooler if I had any use for it outside of like two other nerd friends of mine who run personal Asterisk servers.

BreakDecks,

The original Luddite movement was literally a worker’s rights movement, and the “irrationally afraid of technology” characterization was manufactured by the ruling class, so yes. The Luddites were right then and they’re right now too.

BreakDecks,

This is how it should be, but it isn’t the present day reality. Productivity goes up, wages go down, and the rich get richer. We’re headed straight for technofeudalism buddy…

BreakDecks,

instead

I’d rather they do both.

BreakDecks,

The Luddites lost, but you should read the rest of this wiki article to learn how that happened, and consider again which side you’re on.

BreakDecks,

I hate Siri, but you can do a “Hey Siri, whose phone is this?” and it will force PIN unlock. Great if you aren’t able to physically touch the phone.

BreakDecks,

Good thing that all of the giant monolithic internet companies that the NSA will be using for surveillance are used exclusively by Americans. The NSA isn’t interested in foreign intel anyway. /s

BreakDecks,

The NSA violates the laws of the US. What makes you think they care about other countries’ laws?

BreakDecks,

Okay, Oct. 7 is what they did, but what are they currently doing that you think warrants the slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinian children?

What level of response to that do you think Palestinians are entitled to?

Or do you think they deserve this for existing, and oppose any resistance at all?

BreakDecks,

Hamas ≠ Palestinians

Hamas may target Israeli civilians in their war against the IDF, and that is fucking evil, but Palestinian civilians are just trying to survive. The IDF kills orders of magnitude more Palestinian civilians in their war against Hamas, and that is orders of magnitude more evil.

Expecting Palestinian civilians, half of which are children, and all of which are currently experiencing a man-made famine, to lead the charge against Hamas or die in the crossfire is fucking deranged.

BreakDecks,

Realistically, Debian, because it existed when the movie was set.

BreakDecks,

Other distros exist to teach people that Debian is better.

BreakDecks,

Minecraft is pretty fun, especially if you’re new to gaming. Lots of different ways to play.

And Minetest is a great FOSS clone.

Got tracked down for my school reunion

Today I was contacted by someone at work. She graduated school with me and our 20 year reunion was coming up. Why did she contact me at work? It was the only way they were able to track me down. I was included in promotional material by name. She told me I "was the hardest to track down"and I had to smile....

BreakDecks,

They would need your contact info for that…

BreakDecks,

Then give it to them. Address books, physical and digital, are nothing new.

Some of us don’t want just anyone with something to say showing up in our inboxes.

BreakDecks,

I have had a lot of success.

First I went through this list and filled out lots of opt-out forms: github.com/…/Big-Ass-Data-Broker-Opt-Out-List

Then I emailed everyone on this (dated) list: github.com/…/app%2Fservices_list_06May2021.csv

I got a lot of follow up emails suggesting that my requests were honored, or having me do follow up steps to have my request honored. Only two pushback emails suggesting that they don’t have legally respect my opt out, to which I provided them a strict do-not-contact request that hopefully encourages them to do nothing with any data they might have on me.

It was a huge amount of effort (~50 hours), but my private info was nearly ungooglable a couple of weeks after I finished.

After seeing a huge difference, I then signed up for DeleteMe, and compared to a few friends of mine who never did their own work before signing up, my quarterly reports are extremely sparse. Hopefully it’s easier for them to play whack-a-mole with my data since I did lots of the initial work.

So far I can’t find anything about myself I wouldn’t want to see on any search engine. If I did, I would just find the opt out page and try to nip it in the bud.

As the Internet Gets Scarier, More Parents Keep Their Kids’ Photos Offline (getpocket.com)

Here's a non-paywalled link to an article published in the Washington Post a few days ago. It's great to see this kind of thing getting some mainstream attention. Young children have not made an informed decision about whether they want their photos posted online.

BreakDecks,

On the flip side, search for “mom run” or “parent run” on Instagram to see the kids whose parents have decided to parade in front of thousands of people online. Usually moms posting their little girls in leotards and swimsuits for their mostly mostly adult male followers… 🤢🤮

But don’t worry, Meta isn’t complicit, if you search “child model” they give you a scary child abuse warning message.

Someone else on Lemmy pointed this out a while back, and after seeing it for myself that firmly solidified my decision to stay the fuck away from anything Meta does.

BreakDecks,
BreakDecks,

Yeah…

BreakDecks,

Run as in “mom runs this account”.

“Mom managed” also gets results.

BreakDecks,

The problem with posting pictures of kids in closed groups is that pervs will just join those groups because they have what they’re looking for. You’re basically making it easier for them.

It’s not that parents are afraid of their kids being part of a training set, though that is a bad thing in and of itself. It’s more about all of these AI undressing app ads that are showing up on every social media site, showing just how much of a wild-west situation things currently are, and that this brand of sexual exploitation is in-demand.

Predators are already automating the process so that certain Instagram models get the AI undressing treatment as soon as they upload an exploitable pic. Pretty trivial to do at scale with Instaloader, GroundingDINO, SAM, and SD. Those pics are hosted outside of Instagram where victims have no power to undo the damage. Kids will get sexually exploited in this process, incidentally or intentionally.

BreakDecks,

I too am conflicted about having posted this info, but these accounts are already getting plenty of attention. Some have over 100k followers. I figure it’s better that people know how this works so they can oppose it, even if it risks helping a few new unsavory people to seek these kinds of accounts out.

I’ve tried my options at informing Meta about this issue, and unsurprisingly it is completely impossible to establish any meaningful contact with a company like this.

BreakDecks,

I highly recommend reading “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy, and watching the “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” Docu-series. It really helped me understand the mentality of parents like this and what they personally want out of it. “Reliving their youth vicariously” is a pretty good summary, along with the belief that making their kids famous will guarantee them a bright future.

But it absolutely exposes children to exploitation and abuse, and sometimes the abuse can be quite extreme.

BreakDecks,

Wait till y’all hear about cell towers.

BreakDecks,

To be fair, Reddit makes it infuriating to browse Reddit on mobile using anything but their app, and a Linux phone isn’t going to have the app. Lemmy is an easy solution to that problem, and it’s FOSS.

BreakDecks,

Anyone arguing “Discord has more users” on here can just be reminded that Reddit / Twitter has more users than their fediverse alternatives, and yet here they are on Lemmy, and probably Mastodon too.

A better world is possible.

BreakDecks,

Love how AP journalists say “Washington” instead of “Washington D.C.”, as if the state of Washington doesn’t exist.

Even the AP Stylebook recommends just using “Washington” to describe the Capitol because of its “Global recognition”, but as one of the 7.8 million Washingtonians who don’t live in D.C. on the other side of the country, I absolutely find this shit confusing.

Especially since Seattle’s cherry blossom festival starts today, so it would be the right timing for someone to gift us cherry trees if they were going to.
