Cwilliams,

I’ll throw out another way: to access files from your phone, you can use termux. python -m http.server

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it’s a gacha. I don’t want to gamble with my account being banned, so I’m keeping windows for it specifically.) this’ll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues...

Cwilliams,

Bottles is magic. I’ve used it for FL Studio for a year and it didn’t break

My open source "proof of useful work" captcha alternative (python)

Situation: You run a website and want users to have to do some amount of work in order to activate a function in your code. The “function” can be anything: creating an account, receiving some kind of in-game token/reward, dispensing coins from a faucet, whatever. Captchas are becoming increasingly both increasingly complex...

Cwilliams,

Stuck on a relatively new Galaxy rn, but if I could install a custom ROM, it would be GNOME shell mobile

What is the best model of used ThinkPad to purchase?

I’m thinking of picking up a used ThinkPad on eBay for cheap to serve as my daily driver. I’ll likely run LMDE, and primarily use it for web browsing, office programs, coding, and FreeCAD. Any recommendations on which model would best hit the sweet spot of capability vs price?

Cwilliams,

T480 is generally a good bet. I (naively) got an X1C6, thinking that all thinkpads were nice and repairable. The X1 series, at least, is not

Cwilliams,

Its confusing that we also use ‘roomful’ to refer to a process running as the root user

Cwilliams,

For reference, is this more like inkscape, more like filgma, or a mix between the two?

Can somebody explain why game makers don't start their own companies together?

It seems like every other week a game studio is massively laying off employees; sometimes after years of development. What I’m reading is that it’s a quick way to lower expenses and pad the investors’ pockets, flooding the market with developers and reducing their value, to then hire them back a few months later at lower...

Cwilliams,

There’s even a portable version if you don’t have admin rights on the device

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

Cwilliams,

I did the same! After that, I never tried to run that command from memory

Cwilliams,

@onlinepersona did you change your license? List time I saw, it was CC by SA or something

Cwilliams,

Ah, I see

Cwilliams,

The Linux Cast says soo-suh, so that’s what I’m going to say

Cwilliams,

Um, maybe don’t recomend homebrewing to a brand new Switcher? The process is very risky and it can brick if you do it wrong.

But I do agree with buying second hand games. Nintendo is pretty messed up

Cwilliams, (edited )

This sounds like you’re referring to scrobbling. Try https://last.fm

Edit: last.mf is closed source. It sounds like ListenBrainz or LibreFM is the foss option

Cwilliams,

For anyone wondering, here is the difference between uMatrix and uBlock Origin: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24533329

Cwilliams,

This looks like such a good way to learn rust! I’m gonna try the same thing

Cwilliams,

Wow, I never thought of that as a good thing until now. I bet Gentoo users are more well-rounded than Arch users

Cwilliams,

Or to scroll through XKCD, apparently :P

Cwilliams,

Gnome won’t break. If you don’t want them calling you up in the middle of a work day saying, “why did the bar at the bottom of the screen disappear!?” or “Berny, my screen turned black!”, install Gnome

Cwilliams,

Pros

  • Encrypted
  • Written in Rust
  • Not Electron

Cons

  • It’s not markdown
  • No plugins

Personally, I’m going to stick to Obsidian, because my notes are already there, in markdown, and I can encrypt them with GPG if I want to. But I love to see other options in this space!

Cwilliams,

No problem! I understand that every project is a little bit different. That’s the beauty of Foss, after all! Just because one solution doesn’t work for me does not mean that it won’t work for everyone. Keep up the good work!

Cwilliams,

cough cough snap cough

Cwilliams,

Seriously why does Gnome software feel so much faster!

Cwilliams,

I’m not saying it’s fast; I’m saying that it’s faster than KDE Discover

Cwilliams,

I know there are equivelants for Neovim as well, if Emacs isn’t OP’s thing

Cwilliams,

I personally switched my mom over to Pocket Casts after the news that Google Podcasts was shutting down. I don’t listen to podcasts, tho, and I really just picked it because it was rated well. It’s also not FOSS

Cwilliams,

My budget for laptops has always been <$350. Why are you willing to spend so much on a laptop?

Cwilliams,

Firefox’s extensions actually let developers do stuff, so we have tons of tab groups extensions. My favorite is Simple Tab Groups. But if you dont like that one, you can swap it out for a different one! DO YOU GET THAT KIND OF CUSTOMIZATION IN EDGE?

Please recommend me some blogs about Linux or FOSS or similar that you follow through RSS.

Hi. I have a category Little Tech Blogs in my rss reader where I put those cool niche blogs mostly about Linux, FOSS, programming, etc… Many of them I found by articles linked in this community, so I was wondering if you guys know about more blogs like that. By little I mean it’s run by one person or a small group of people,...

Cwilliams,

Hacker News, obviously. Also, lobste.rs is cool (its not only rust stuff)

Cwilliams,

Anyone knows how to properly start a multiseat wayland with a desktop environment or window manager running?

I just need simple stuff such as profile initialization of the user and if it's possible to just share the same discrete GPU across multiple seats?

The end result? I want to isolate my current user space from the gaming space where I can just connect using moonlight/sunshine. I want it all headless.

@linux @linux_gaming

Cwilliams,

Is this even possible in Wayland? i thought it was an Xorg thing

Cwilliams,

Reminds me of this blog post I read a while back: sive.rs/1s

Questions about Linux-Linux dualboot

So I’ve had enough from partitioning my HDD between Linux and Windows, and I want to go full Linux, my laptop is low end and I tend to keep some development services alive when I work on stuff (like MariaDB’s) so I decided to split my HDD into three partitions, a distro (Arch) for my dev stuff, a distro (Pop OS) for gaming,...

Cwilliams,

If you really want to tripleboot Linux, I highly recommend systemd-boot, especially because you are already using Arch, which supports it. I’m sure you could get it to work with Pop.

Cwilliams,

Are Phosh and Gnome Shell Mobile the same thing?

Cwilliams,

Are you using Gnome Shell Mobile, or Phosh?

Cwilliams,

If you decide to go with the full install, the arch wiki has some good tips: wiki.archlinux.org/…/Install_Arch_Linux_on_a_remo…

Cwilliams,

Is it weird that, although some people prefer blue shirts over red shirts, I wear both colors?

Cwilliams,

Yep, I hear ya

I started using tiling window managers. What tips do you have? What packages do you use to make yours fully functional? Lost noob needs some guidance...

I decided to dive heads first into window managers and need your input for your guidance. I’m absolutely not a Linux-pro. I basically never use the terminal, just started using Github, and only used Gnome (+ KDE for 1/8th the time) for now....
