EinfachUnersetzlich,

It’s the raising of the animals before they’re slaughtered that’s the problem, not the cooking after they’re dead.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

UK elections are always on Thursdays for some unfathomable reason.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Is this another “illegal immigrant finally deported” story?

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Note that this article has nothing to do with the USA.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

I wouldn’t trust a service that can’t even spell résumé properly.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

They were all elected by the voters in their constituencies, the same as every MP, and chosen as the leader of their party by the party members, the same as every PM.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

I’m a cyclist in the UK and you’re totally right. Enforce the laws against those uninsured electric motorbikes constantly riding on paths and ignoring every law possible as well.

Dubai plans to move its busy international airport to a $35 billion new facility within 10 years (apnews.com)

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state’s second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches “within the next 10 years” in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday....

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Heathrow also has another five international commercial airports in the city region (all of which only have one runway, but one of those was until recently the busiest single-runway airport in the world).

Gatwick, City, Luton, Stansted and Southend, although the last of those is arguable. It calls itself London Southend so I’m keeping it.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

1 billion of what currency? How do you account for inflation?

Repairing bad sectors in an external drive

So I have this external 2.5" drive salvaged from an old laptop of mine. I was trying to use it to backup/store data but the transfer to the drive fails repeatedly at the ~290GB mark leading me to believe that maybe there is a bad sector on the drive. I tried to inspect the drive using smartmontools and smartctl but since it is...

EinfachUnersetzlich,

What error do you get in the system log when the transfer fails?

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Yes, but for developers it’s good to not have to program for each CPU architecture/OS.

I can write some C, C++ or Rust code and compile it for loads of platforms and have it do the same thing (simplified).

EinfachUnersetzlich,

That’s still true, dozens of us still use it!

EinfachUnersetzlich,

I don’t use it for the optimisations, I just prefer its package manager and ecosystem.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Who are “they” and “we” in this context?

Help with HDD

I have a 4TB HDD that I use to store music, films, images, and text files. I have a 250GB SDD that I use to install my OS and video games. So far I didn’t have any problem with this setup, obviously it’s a bit slower when it reads the HDD but nothing too serious, but lately it’s gotten way worse, where it just lags too...

EinfachUnersetzlich,

What results do you get from hdparm’s speed tests?

What filesystem is on the disk?

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Ah, right you are! Didn’t spot that

non-Euclidean filesystem

I noticed that I only had 5 GiB of free space left today. After quickly deleting some cached files, I tried to figure out what was causing this, but a lot was missing. Every tool gives a different amount of remaining storage space. System Monitor says I’m using 892.2 GiB/2.8 TiB (I don’t even have 2.8 TiB of storage...

EinfachUnersetzlich,

You need to point it at a directory that has the btrfs root subvolume mounted on it (subvolid=5) although I thought it gave a different error if that was your problem.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

You can set the metadata and data independently as RAID0, RAID1 or other levels depending on the number of disks and your desired level of data loss risk.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

I’m not Australian so this might be a stupid question - is that how access to healthcare works in Australia?

EinfachUnersetzlich,

The UK is finally shutting down its last coal-fired power station in six months too (Ratcliffe-on-Soar).

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Yeah they love a bit of old growth Canadian forest burning in Drax.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

But coal is actually the cheapest fuel.

Says who? A quick bit of research shows that natural gas is cheaper, and it probably depends on the location and availability of each.

…m.wikipedia.org/…/Cost_of_electricity_by_source

EinfachUnersetzlich,

For current existing power stations, coal is cheapest of the fuels. The EIA numbers are here and here’s Statista research here on the historical cost of nat gas vs coal specifically

Using USA-only statistics in a thread about Slovakia and the UK is disingenuous at best.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Move north? Why would living in Scotland help?

EinfachUnersetzlich,

I want to say none of that is common in England but perhaps it’s changed since I was at school.

EinfachUnersetzlich,
  1. How is TikTok Islamist?
  2. Your lack of capital letters and poor grammar.
EinfachUnersetzlich,

Woke companies are sending jobs there like crazy

Not sure about the “woke” bit, but Ireland is a tax haven.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Microsoft does too. Every time I log in to Azure (or Intune, or Defender, or Microsoft 365 or whatever they’re all called these days) for work something has changed names. The documentation usually isn’t updated to reflect the changes.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

What does “rsync triggered” mean? Rsync isn’t anything to do with btrfs.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Yeah, combination microwave/convection ovens are pretty common in Europe, but they don’t need to be smart.

EinfachUnersetzlich, (edited )

Yeah, at current electricity prices where I live that would be just under £300,000 per transaction. Doesn’t seem right.

Edit: as pointed out, I was out by a factor of 100. Electricity costs 40p per kWh here.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

You’re right. It was late.

EinfachUnersetzlich,

Don’t forget the employer taxes, insurance, recruitment costs and so on. It wouldn’t surprise me if the employees are earning on average half that.
