plenty of it doesn’t come from a company doing lousy stuff like this

So you only play indie games? Because that’s basically the only way you avoid “companies doing lousy stuff.”

How easy is it to switch back to windows?

I’m considering switching to linux but I’m not a computer savvy person, so I wanted to have the option to switch back to windows if unforeseen complications (I only have 1 pc). Is it just a download on usb and install? And what ways can I get the product key or “cleaner” debloated versions.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

I would argue that it is better to have two separate drives for the installation. It simplifies things for non tech savvy people, and I believe Windows has less of an opportunity to mess with your linux install, such as messing with the efi partition.

Ctrl + Shift + - should decrease the font size of the current terminal, which isn’t what you are looking for, but could be useful while you sort it out. Is it possible that the font in the config doesn’t exist, causing this issue?

What happens when the defaults change? Is old code all of a sudden not following the style guidelines?

This is such a high level description that it is a meaningless comparison. The fact that Fallout doesn’t take itself nearly as seriously as Westworld is already a huge difference. Sometimes the implementation is what is valuable, not the idea.

France votes to ban ‘forever chemicals,’ exempting frying pans (www.politico.eu)

The French National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a bill aimed at restricting the manufacture and sale of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — also known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.” The MPs, backed by the government, voted to exclude kitchen utensils from the scope of the text....

You’re ironically perpetuating a myth that cast iron needs special care. You can clean cast iron with soap just like anything else. You just have to make sure it isn’t wet for extended periods of time

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

Tbh, game studios often require special equipment such as dev kits and high-end PCs for development. It makes sense that they might not want to send this equipment home, especially if it is an unreleased console"s dev kit. Game studios honestly seem more justified in not having WFH

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

I actually don’t like their games. I am speaking as someone who used to work for a AAA, both before and during COVID shelter in place

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

Not every dev is compiling code to run on a devkit

Depends on the studio. There will be a lead platform, and if that platform is a console, then a majority will run on a devkit.

surely they are not running a new build every day.

In the studio I worked in, we ran new builds almost twice a day. That doesn’t include the iterative changes you make if you are a programmer. If you don’t run new builds contantly, that means you aren’t doing any actual work if you are on the engineering side. If you are in art you might not really screw around with too many builds. If you are a director or producer, you might not either if you’re bad at your job.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

Maybe the tools have changed since last I worked in the industry (or maybe we weren’t good at using all the features), but I never saw that anyone had remote access to the devkits. I could remote into my workstation, but it surely was not the best way to work.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

Correct me if I am wrong, but this doesn’t seem to work for devkits? Like if I want to run something on a PS4 devkit, I can’t use parsec for that, can I?

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

I’ll definitely keep this in mind if I end up going back to the industry. Thanks!

Cool, so you’ve outed yourself as someone not 100% against racial slurs. If Nintendo was a black-owned company, would you have done the same?

Awesome, so Japanese settings will soon be oversaturated in games. We already got Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima (and will presumably get a sequel), and whatever that other Monster Hunter style game was. We will also be getting an Assassin’s Creed in Japan. Sounds like Santa Monica doesn’t know what to do so they are following trends. Really don’t think Kratos belongs in Japan.

We do require a BS in computer science

The only scenarios where I’d think I wouldn’t require one are

  1. I want cheaper labor
  2. I am really desperate to fill a position
  3. The skills I need in a candidate are incredibly niche, thus I want to widen the applicant pool.

#1 and #2 are indicative of other problems in your company. I get that you can be a good dev without a degree, but from an employer perspective, it seems like an easy way to save time and money on hiring. I am convinced that a lot of money is wasted on recruiters who throw everyone under the sun into the hiring process just so they can justify their existence.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

Wouldn’t you argue that putting hard restrictions would have the benefit of shrinkjng your recruitment team? To be clear, I’m coming from an extremely anecdotal point of view, but to me it seems like tech is full of imposters jumping from job to job, playing up their experience. Recruiters cannot spot these people, because they know all the jargon despite having none of the skills. This is why these technical interviews exist, but now those are even being gamed by people by studying leetcode. I’d be really curious what a high quality tech recruiter does vs the average.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

FYI, leetcode is not a “learn to code” website it is a “practice problems that will be asked at tech interviews” site. A lot of these problems are inspired by (or maybe are even literally from) interviews at “top companies” like Google, Facebook, etc. They are almost completely algorithmic or data structure problems, i.e. “unrelated to your actual work” (well, most of your actual work for most people).

Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend (lemmy.world)

This Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend, this has happened with Gnome (Wayland), i3, less commonly Swaywm, almost everything I have suspended it with, and makes the computer unusable outside of a TTY. I am considering trying KDE next. What can be the issue here? I am currently using EndeavorOS.

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

I’ve had similar issues, but with a 7800XT and only with variable refresh rate enabled. Don’t know if that is caused by the same thing though

Has anyone here built a Beowulf Cluster? (spinoff.nasa.gov)

A university near me must be going through a hardware refresh, because they’ve recently been auctioning off a bunch of ~5 year old desktops at extremely low prices. The only problem is that you can’t buy just one or two. All the auction lots are batches of 10-30 units....

KRAW,
@KRAW@linux.community avatar

The only practical purpose of such a cluster is educational purposes. Clusters as a whole are only useful for academics and researchers, so once you get into clusters using old hardware you’re essentially only building the cluster for the sake of the challenge.

TBH the solution is to salt the pesto less and salt your toppings more, probably by just adding finishing salt after cooking the pizza. Also consider using a nonfresh mozzarella, which generally has more flavor. While the creaminess of fresh is nice, I find it to be way too bland most of the time.

This problem is the exact reason why I stick to pepperoni and banana peppers. They are inherently flavorful and salty.

Saag/palak paneer is again, a sauce based dish but a lot more milder. Chana masala is also low on spice. Tandoori chicken is not sauce-based, but personally I don’t get too excited about it. Biryani is again no sauce. The last order I had did have a lot of spice, but historically these have been milder than other Indian dishes for me. Certain types of dosas might be up your alley too. This is coming from someone not well versed in Indian food, so I am sure there are more.

open-world action game

It’s amazing that devs are still crapping out games in this genre.

This would be cool if this ended up being “Alien Isolation but with dinosaurs,” but I am not quite sure that’s the direction they are taking based on the trailer alone.

donkey kong on n64 had you what go collect bananas or something? is that fun?

I don’t know what caused people to all of a sudden complain about this game (maybe a dunkey video?). This game is still fun by modern standards regrdless of whether you 100% it or not

NVIDIA is basically the only GPGPU game

NVIDIA GPUs are definitely the go-to these days, but the world’s most powerful supercomputer is using AMD GPUs. I wouldn’t be surprised if AMD picks up speed (though they probably won’t beat or meet NVIDIA). NVIDIA got started way sooner, so the fact AMD is behind is only natural.

I really like my Filco honestly. Very simple but nice feeling mechanical keyboards imo.
